Stunning B&B in a great location within the town. We were blown away by the size and facilities of the rooms, and breakfast was great as well.

We also agree that this was a great place to spend an evening. The property has loads of character but is very comfortable. Our hosts were charming and very interesting to talk to. (But will not intrude I am sure if you are looking for a quiet time, but you will miss out on some interesting reminiscences and suggestions of places to visit around France).

We were glad that we had dinner there with the chance of some home cooking, some excellent wine and a most enjoyable night. Similarly breakfast was good as well. And all for a most reasonable price.

Our GPS struggled to direct us there with a few wrong turns because of close narrow streets some of which were one way but it was reasonably clear once we found it. The only thing we were disappointed in was Thiers itself. Parts were run down, there was quite a bit of work going on around the main viewing platforms and a lot of the nearby premises were vacant. While we found the town was a convenient stop off on our trip -- and would not have wanted to miss having dinner there -- I think that the town will struggle to attract too many tourists without somehow picking its economy up. None of that of course is our hosts' fault and as we said we enjoyed our night there.

We spent just one night at Maison Conchette on a trip from the West of France to the Alpes. We chose the town of Thiers for a stop-over due to its convenient location just off the autoroute. The house is a lovely stone building with a solid feel to it in the very heart of the old part of town. Parking is on the road outside (a bit of a steep slope, but otherwise quite alright). We asked for a room for 4 (two adults and two children) and had a suite on the top floor - up two enormous flights of stone stairs. All the furnishings are antique, with beautiful wooden floors and a modern and clean bathroom. Mr and Mrs Lycke were warm and welcoming and we'd gladly have spent another hour or two talking to them after breakfast if we hadn't had to get on with our trip! Although we didn't dine with them in the evening, we were directed to a nearby restaurant which served local specialties and we enjoyed a very fresh and varied continental breakfast in their massive vaulted dining room the next morning. We'd recommend Maison Conchette without hesitation as being a pleasant and geat value for money place to stay.

We chose Maison Conchette based on a recommendation in the Routard guide to the Auvergne. It is on Rue Conchette in the heart of the old town of Thiers with easy on-street parking. Farther on, the street becomes a pedestrian zone. Belgian owners Hugo and Magda Lyche are renovating a large, early 17th century house and have done a beautiful job so far. The rooms are large, quiet, and comfortable. We fortunately chose to take the table d'hotes for 20 euros and got a beautifully prepared home cooked meal, excellent wines included, that in our opinion was worth far more than the cost. As Thiers is a good stopover point on our somewhat frequent trips from Antibes to Paris and back, Maison Conchette will be our lodging of choice.
