“A very good hotel for the price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2012

Just back after two weeks Hotel & staff could not be faulted. As with all buffet meal sometimes not very hot but always a good choice. Staff very friendly & helpful at all times. Plenty of sun beds but on 2nd week people claiming the before 8. Only fault we went with first choice company o.k. but plane will be on antiques roadshow next week seats worn out & cramped.

Room Tip: It is a very large complex some rooms are a walk from the dinning areas of an evening

Six of us (all adults) stayed at the Riu Paraiso from 5th to 12th April 2012. We booked last September and paid £4000 including UK VAT and for the "choose your seats" option on Thomas Cook Airways. We arrived early afternoon after a very smooth flight and a straightforward transfer to the hotel and the reception process was speedy and friendly. In fact the strongest asset of this hotel must be the staff, all of whom are friendly and helpful and who do their best for their guests.
Our rooms were adjacent and on the ground floor (128, 130, 132). The view was of the tennis courts but we each had a nice patio with a table and chairs and the room itself was a good size with twin beds (as requested: three parents with adult offspring) and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was large and had a bath as well as a shower that produced constant hot water to a strong pressure.
The hotel is large and spacious. Our rooms were not far away from the bar, restaurant and pools, and the beach is just across the road. The majority of the guests were German but other than the early reservation of sunbeds for which they are of course well known, they were of a wide age range, quiet, polite and no trouble to anyone. Which is of course more than can be said for all of our fellow Brits.

The hotel struggled a bit over the Easter Weekend as it must have been close to capacity and the food went from excellent on Good Friday when there was plentiful smoked salmon and big langoustine style prawns to a lower standard on Saturday and Sunday, and we chose to eat out on both of those nights in search of better dinner and a more leisurely meal rather than a queue and a refuelling experience. No complaints though as you do tend to get what you pay for and this is the bargain end of the all inclusive experience. Breakfast was very good all week and the day time dining room and snack bar combination meant that there was pretty well always food available during the day. We ate in one of the speciality restaurants (Mexican) and it was better than the normal buffet without being particularly authentic. We chose to eat out on four nights and a lunch time, but that was also about wanting to see a bit of local life than a direct complaint about the hotel food.We found an excellent Spanish restaurant in a side street off Puerto del Carmen town and went twice, and we also enjoyed a very nice meal in the old port, and had a fun night out with food and lots of beer and sangria at Rancho Texas. Lunch out is a more debatable experience and I suspect that there is nowhere local that is better than the hotel.
The hotel wine was drinkable if very bland and we chose to buy our aperitif wines from the supermarket and chill them in the room fridge. I like Cruzcampo beer and it was available on a self service basis through the day until midnight. Vodka, Gin, Amaretto and other spirits were cheerfully served in big measures with the ice usually put in after the spirit. No complaints at all. I saw one UK couple served Ballantines Whisky in measures large enough to see some people off in one go!
The beach towel change man was friendly and although the towels were not big fluffy beach towels (Holiday Inn Express rather than Malmaison), I do think that some people need to get real. They were perfectly clean and adequate and were changed as often as requested. The resident cat is black and choosy about tit bits. She turned down prawn and fish from me but enjoyed pork. We saw two other cats much less frequently and they could have been the black cat's mates on a visit. None are any trouble but none can be bothered chasing the two or three resident pigeons.
We went on an excursion to the volcanoes which was very good and had a knowledgeable guide and a careful driver but the excursion was spoiled a little at the end by a pointless stop at a wine bodegas, as there was no tour and the sample offered was pathetic and to add insult to injury, the wines were actually much cheaper in local supermarkets. And not great. We also did the Rancho Texas BBQ evening which was very good and offered plenty of food and unlimited beer and sangria or soft drinks.
Great snorkelling from the sea off the beach over the road - angel fish and bass were the highlights. Beach beds were plentiful and cheaper than Mallorca at €10 for the pair all day.

Would I come back? Yes. This is the quiet end of Puerto del Carmen and although the hotel experience was not the same as the Gran Melia / Sensatori that my wife and I stayed at in Tenerife in February, then again neither was the price (£650 v. £1500 each). This was a very enjoyable holiday.

Just returned from the RIU Paraiso in Lanzarote. Most of the other reviews about this place are all true. The staff all say hello and go out of their way to help you. The food was very good, all inclusive buffet style with the option to change the evening meal to either the asian or mexican restaurant but book early. Evening meals are very busy and if you are not in by 6.30 pm opening you can be kept waiting for 10/15 mins until a table becomes free. The animation team keep things moving during the day but if you want to be involved you'll need to be reception / restaurant side as the palace area pools although good are also quiet (but the bar in the pool makes up for this). Turn left or right out of the back of the hotel and within 10-15 mins you are in shopping precincts / shops and bars that have sky sports (i.e. premier league football!!) The beach across the road from the hotel is very clean and quite long but almost deserted - probably because most hotels in the area are all inclusive. We found that Playa Blanca had a lot more breeze than Puerta Del Carmen so afternoons round the pool can heat up quite a lot. English papers arrive at 9.30 am, WIFI near reception is about 2 euros per 45 mins and there are internet screens for about the same price. It's about 15 min drive from the airport but you do not hear the planes taking off / landing though you do see them. Equal mix of Germans (in speedos!), English and Spanish. Quite a lot of daily activities - rifle shooting, archery, pistol shooting, boules, volley ball, keep fit, norwegian skiing (keep fit on skis!)...

There are several cats which are best to ignore, the rooms are clean and well specified (fantastic air-con) but a tad small. Bring a pillow though, the ones supplied are no more than towels rolled up (we asked for 2 extra straight away but I still had a stiff neck after the first day). TV is rubbish SKY news or BBC world news and TCM are the only english channels (why does sky news go quiet every 5 mins and just show news highlights?) - We went in April and loungers were getting booked up by around 8.30 / 9.00 am (much better than some resorts though!) you can change the towels each day

We are planning now when to return. The place is not for teenagers or early 20 somethings but young families or older people will find it very nice.

Room Tip: For a quiet room ask for the Palace side - odd numbers get the sun all day on the balcony

Spent a week at the hotel there were 7 of us including a baby just under a year. The hotel in general is good the food is well presented but unfortunately quite repetative but owing to the size of this hotel its not surprising. The one thing the hotel we felt was lacking was a nice bar and seating area which you could relax after your meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: High floor rooms are quiet in the main building

Spent a week here 25march to 1 april. THE POSITIVE POINTS!
Can not fault the staff well most of them some of the bar staff can be a little rude but reception, housekeeping and grounds staff were faultless.Rooms kept very clean with nicely folded towels left on bed swans, flowers etc.We were in the second half of the hotel its ok but quite a walk from the main block with only the snack bar and small bar to hand, both of these are only open from noon until 5 pm. the main block houses the restaurant, bar and snackbar also the entertainment room.Pools are good but you can only get towels from 9am to 12 noon so people just get their towels and grab a sun bed and if you cant beat them you just have to join the. Good location well worth turning left when you come out of the hotel into los pocillso some nice bars and restaurants in that direction.Turn right into puerto del carmen its a 10-15 minute walk or 2-3 euros in a taxi. Try top gun bar cheap and cheerful bingo monday wednesday and friday nights.Avoid cafe la ola food lousy!!!!
ONTO THE NEGATIVE!
Food was lousy poor quality and even worse choice. Its repetetive with the same things every day.The snack bar and main restaurant serve the same things burgers ,burgers and burgers.Salad bar was lacking meat and cheese with just lettuce tomato etc to choose from. The hot foods to speak of are served in small dishes holding 4-5 portions so they are always empty and the staff are never in a rush to top them up they are also in the same location as the so called show cooking so endless queues. The ala carte restaurants are not what i would class as ala carte they are just a buffet extention of the main restaurant. Mexican was edible,. Asian is well worth a visit but passed on the canarian when i saw snails and rabbit on the menu.
The drinks are adequate but yiou will be given cheap tasteless spirits at the bar, there are better quality options but you have to ask for them. Thank goodenss for the self serve beer ,soft drink pumps and coffee machines as if you had to queue for these at the bar you would never get served although they are often empty and again nobody seems to want to fill them up.
Cant comment on the enttertainment as we never watched it the room it was in put us off somewhat it is cinema style with no where to put your drinks and if you wanted to get out you would have to disturb everybody sat around you.
On the whole cant give this hotel 4 star think 3 at best would be more appropriate ,its too big for what facilities it has to offer and just feel they are trying to do too much.
Hope this helps but if your like me you have to try it for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

Room Tip: higher floors get the sun all day

Been to several different Riu hotels over the last few years, this has to be one of the best for value for the price we paid.
We stayed in the old palace sjde, across the bridge, had a great pool and sea view, If you go make sure to go to the themed menu a la'carte restaurants, the maid service was excellent our room was cleaned every day to a high standard.
The reception staff spoke many languages, were very friendly and helpful, thank you Pilar you should be extremely proud of your staff at the desk.
One deputy manager , Raul Garcia , had only been at the Paraiso for three weeks , he was always talking to guests , assisting in the restaurants and as my wife and my friends wife say evidently very handsome . He is the type of manager that makes a great holiday and I wish him every success in his career with the Riu chain.
The animacion team were always on the go but never too forceful.
Finally the bar staff.....excellent, great fun, thanks guys far too many to name you all but exceptional service from Francisco (Deniz) ,Julio, Torren and Jenny.
Would I return? yes but it would have to be two weeks next time.

Room Tip: I'd love to tell you the great rooms we had but you may be going the next time I do. :))

I would love to give this hotel more than 3 stars as it has so many plus points which i will begin with:

Great location
Great rooms (albeit the pool view was somewhat misleading but we got over that....)
Staff very friendly - nothing was too much trouble
Exceptionally Clean
Great Entertainment for Children
Pools were good
Parks for children
Great family holiday
Drink not bad and readily available (although the juices were quite poor)

BUT..... and this is a big BUT so if you like your food then PLEASE LISTEN:

This is an All Inclusive Hotel so you are stuck with eating here... and the eating experience is not good. The restuarant (or canteen as we called it) is overcrowded and the food is very very poor. Certainly not worthy of its 4 star rating. It is very repetitive but what is worse, it is poor quality. Obviously bought in bulk and bought cheap. The meat is fatty and tasteless, the salad bar is dry and all tastes the same, the breakfast is poor - the "chefs" could barely fry an egg. Also, there are pool bars which serve food all day. Again, this food is very poor. It tastes cheap and poor quality. Put it this way, I am a huge meat eater and I couldn't stomach the burgers or the hot dogs as they were awful.

So, if food is not a big part of your holiday then go to this hotel in a heartbeat. However, if you enjoy decent food and if you don't like standing in line with your plate then go elsewhere!

Also, there are lots of comments about Germans. There are lots of Germans at this hotel and they can be a little rude. If that bothers you, again, don't go! As I said, I wish I could give it more than 3 stars although it would be misleading as the food really is poor.

Room Tip: Don't bother paying for a pool view - we could barely see it and paid £200!!!
