For a country that is supposed to be foodie Nirvana we were a bit disappointed by our first few days - and then one of our Airbnb compatriots recommended L'escale. Wow! This is what we were looking for. Fantastic food with really good service. We're going again this evening. This place is great.

Our first night in Martinique started with dinner at L'Escale. It was lovely from start to finish. The sea bass dinner and veal scallops with wild mushroom sauce were wonderful. We were impressed with the meals, wine selection and the service. Pricing was fair for the meal quality. We were invited to return for a birthday party the next night which would have been fun but we decided to cook in our villa that evening. Delightful spot with outdoor seating sheltered from the elements.

The owner of our hotel suggested this place and it did not disappoint.

Tried to go our first night but they were full. Our hotel owner made us a reservation for the next day and we were seated promptly and without any trouble.

I love that the waitstaff drags the big menu chalkboard to each table. The waitress didn't speak very much English but we all had a good laugh trying to figure out the choices - the bartender and another guest also got involved.

This place is so friendly and such a good vibe!

We arrived at L'Escale on a quiet night. One of our local neighbors on the island had suggested it as a cool place to grab dinner (always befriend you local neighbors they have the best advice). We took him up on his recommendation. We arrived around 7pm and and we were greeted by the front of house manager. This is where things got really unwelcoming. Upon realizing we were American he quickly told us we needed a reservation. We looked around to practically empty restaurant with empty tables everywhere but gave him the benefit of the doubt that maybe everything was reserved until later and asked if it would be OK if we just got a drink at the bar and waited to see if they had any openings or cancellations. He told us that wouldn't be possible. We then asked if we could just have a drink and hangout at the bar. There were a few locals hanging out doing the same and we figured we'd take in the place for a bit and then move on and grab food elsewhere. Again, we were told that wouldn't be possible. At this point my friends started to think there was more going on then just the fact that they may have other reservations for later. I however still gave him the benefit of the doubt and said ok we'll make a reservation for another day and come back. He of course didn't offer us the ability to make one that night but we came back a few days later in the afternoon to make one for the evening. He wasn't there this time and we instead ran into the chef who was preparing for that night's dinner menu. The chef was extremely friendly and wrote down our reservation and said he would see us later. We came back later that evening only to once again encounter the horrible front of house manager. We came in, he asked if we had a reservation, we told him we did and he told us we did not. We explained we had been there earlier in the day and the chef had written it in the book. He then looked back in the book went and spoke to the chef (chastising him we assume) and then came back and reluctantly sat us at our table. From there we were handed over to a very nice waitress who took good care of us. However when it came time to pay the bill the Front of House manager re-emerged. He wasn't done with us I guess and wanted to continue to play some more games. It was at this time that he suddenly lost the ability to speak English. Now I travel quite a bit and by no means am one of those tourists who thinks that when I go to another place they should have to speak my language. However from our first encounter with this gentlemen he spoke English to us and did so fluently. So when we asked for the check both in French and English and he pretended to not understand us I knew my friends had been right all along and this guy was treating us a certain way because of where we were from. At that moment I let him know that the games needed to stop or we would be leaving him to deal with the check on his own. Suddenly his English returned and he realized he had eroded the last bit of patience I had for his antics. He quickly got the check. We made sure to pay the waitress directly because her service was terrific and we didn't want this guy getting any piece of the large tip we wanted to leave her. It's a shame that this guy is associated with this business as everything else here is terrific. The waitress and chef were top notch as was the food and drinks. They could do well to lose the arrogant donkey of Front of House manager and I don't think we'd return until he is replaced. It is scary to think that this gentlemen could be destroying such a cool place single handedly.

We landed in this beautiful restaurant by mistake but did not regret going there for a second. The atmosphere was truly great and the place is so romantic and nice it's located in a beautiful garden and just perfect for some pre-dinner drinks and some food after. Our meal was incredible all the food was perfectly cooked, the service was very friendly and we were very happy to have stopped by this place. I would definitely return and suggest this restaurant to anyone who appreciates great food in a lovely atmosphere.
