We have been a member for 12 years with Mayan Palace and the Grand Mayan. We have finally upgraded to a Grand Luxxe and Grand Bliss for our family of 12. The order of luxury is as followed. Mayan Palace, then Bliss, Grand Mayan, Grand Bliss and Grand Luxxe at the highest end.

Mayan Palace: The Mayan is the oldest and most bare bones of all the hotels. It's age is showing and the rooms are lacking any real luxury. They get the job done though if you just need a room since the grounds are the real beauty. The house keeping and cleanliness is still excellent and if it's not, the concierge will take care of any problems. You do get shut out of some restaurants and other grounds at the resort since only the Grand Luxxe members get access to everything.

The Vidanta organization and product, whether you want to admit it or not, is amazing. We have been to exotic Marriott and Ritz Carlton resort locations and they don't even come close. this is not a cheap or all inclusive affordable option, it's a 4-5 star experience. Two complaints I hear the most are the size of the resort and the high pressure sales. I can't believe people complain about walking or taking a quick shuttle. You should be happy they have so much space to work with. And they do offer small resorts in other locations if you look them up. Also, sure they have high pressure sales, there is no denying that. Most people fail to tell you they get 10% off their bill for doing the tour and pitch, but also, that's how they get their cash flow for the business. They are constantly putting money back in to the resort and improving the costumer experience. In just the last 6 months at Riviera Maya alone they have added dozens of beautifully wooden walk ways and bridges, put new and more equipment in the gym, improved there food quality, added new restaurants, they now give free drinks and food with a round of golf, they built two additional piers on the beach and finally finished a top of the line theatre and grounds for an amazing Circus Du Solie show. Where else can you find a company that wants to make there experience as perfect as possible. Every time we come there is something new. As I mentioned before, we have upgraded our rooms to the Grand Luxxe and Grand Bliss. We did this for a very important reason. Not just because the rooms are a little nicer and the amenities are better. It's because Vidanta is building like crazy. More resort locations with some amazing experiences to keep them different. The catch, as I understand it, is that they are only building Grand Bliss and Grand Luxxe rooms going forward. So if you own Grand Mayan or Mayan, your left in the dust. You feel forced to upgrade or buy the highest end to take advantage of this. Because our experience has been so pleasant for our growing family and we know we will continue to go every year, we felt the upgrade was worth it. There is not much out there that can compare to what you get with Vidanta.

Like other reviews state, there is a lot of walking involved here. You can wait for shuttles, but the waits are long and sporadic. We like walking, so it was not a big deal to us until it rained. If it rains, expect to get wet if you try to venture out to dinner or anything else on the resort. The Greenbreak for tacos was a depressing experience in the rain. The palapa was leaking and people were moving their tables around trying to avoid the leaks. The appetizer came out with the entrees and the beers showed up long after both. The food was mediocre but the place was packed because the other options are over priced. The larger option of Havana Moon was only half full most nights and I would guess that is because everything is over salted and over priced. We went off the resort three times. Tulum along the beach is beautiful and has more of a bohemian feel. Playa del Carmen was nice and we had a good meal at a place on 5th Avenue. If you take the shuttle it is only $5 or 50 pesos and convenient.
The staff at Mayan Palace were very nice. The pool staff was beyond attentive and friendly. The suites are dated, but clean. They don't even provide paper towels or coffee filters. For a timeshare, it all feels cheap.
I am glad we made it to this area of MX, but probably wouldn't go back and if we did I wouldn't stay here unless we got an amazing deal.

Room Tip: Building 14 or below is closer to everything.

Review for trip to Mayan Palace in Playa del Carmen (Dec 21 - 27) with 3 adults and 1 child. We had a 1 room suite in bldg 11 rm 1141. Very clean and spacious like mini apartment with dishes and cookware. Room was cleaned every morning and service to make beds for couches in the evening. Pool is amazing with swim up bars, ocean is good to look at but not good for swimming (lots of coral). We ate at Havana Moon, Greenbreak, and Tacobreak; the prices were less than we expected and the food was great. The Brio workout room has all up to date equipment and my wife was very pleased with the 50 min massage. Some drinks were a little pricey but the alcohol content was up to par. We took a cab to Mega grocery store for snacks and the prices were good, cab fare can get a bit expensive but can be negotiated. All of the walking pathways were well lit and sturdy, we walked from bldg 12 to the last bldg and the pathway was clear and lit. shuttles can be a bit confusing at times (red, orange, yellow flags). The walk from bldg 12 to the pool is somewhat long but the path has a great view and is well lit. Bought a couple items from the Jade market and they were not overly priced. Took two all day excursions to Isla Mujeres and XCaret eco park. Swam with dolphins at Isla Mujeres but would recommend only for really good swimmers, the tide from the ocean made the event somewhat difficult. Took free boat ride around to downtown Isla Mujeres and picked up some well priced souvenirs. The boat ride to the island is about 25-30 minutes. The Xcaret eco park had something for everyone; dolphin swim, large turtles, alligators, sting ray and more. The lagoons, sand, beach, swimming and view of the ocean is breathtaking, the buffet food was great and the canal water path was cool. Our only true negative was at check in when it took four hours for our room to be available, we passed the time hanging out at Greenbreak with a great server Nicolas; the staff overall was excellent and accommodating. I would recommend as a mid level resort without the all inclusive price, we also did not take the bait for sitting through their presentation, we heard horror stories about them, but that is how they make their money.

My close friends and I had been planning a trip to Cancun since we were teenagers. Finally the time was right and we couldn't have chossen a better place to stay at. The staff was always very attentive to my needs. The maids were the most nice and helpful lady's I've ever encountered in hotels of this kind. I've never been treated this nice in the U.S. to be honest. My room was very nice and specious. The beds were very comfortable and the a/c worked wonderfully. There are restaurants at the resort which I thought were kind of pricey, but the food was great. If you're not looking to spend that much money on restaurants, there are local buses that will take you to Playa del Carmen for $3 dollars or so. I'm truly looking forward to another amazing vacation at The Mayan Palace next year.

This resort is HUGE. You have to walk everywhere and we even had to walk in the rain because they do not deliver room service in the rain. If you speak Spanish refrain from using it because the staff with treat you poorly. My entire family had to refrain from speaking Spanish if we wanted to have any kind of service.

This is a beautiful site. But it is massive. The buildings are spread out over acres. So there is lots of greenery and space. . . Except by the main pool and beach. There are six developments on the site. Palace is the most affordable and most central. Being Palace owners who have been here several times, we felt the Palace is starting to show it's age. Yet the one bedroom suite is spacious and well-appointed.

Palace guests may not use the pools and restaurants at the other 5 levels. But they can all use the palace pool and beach so it becomes quite crowded. Lots of kids here. Lots of activities. For the size, it seems a bit shy on restaurants grocery selection. But Balche was closed for renovation while we were here so it might be better when it is open again.

Expect to do a lot of walking here or waiting for shuttles. They offer a shuttle into Playa del Carmen. It drops you right by the Mega, a Mexican grocery store. Walmart is 2-3 blocks over. Do your own research on local activities. There is so much in the area. . .history, geology, botany, water parks, turtles, eco-parks and more. But the Mayan doesnt make it easy to get the info. They have a travel desk. But it helps to have an idea of your own as to the kinds of things in the area that you would like to explore.

The mayan can be frustrating because of it's size and staff's English, while decent, often misses the mark when explaining things. You get different answers from different staff. We were told at check in that wifi cost $80 per week. But it turns out they have two wifi options. Basic is free. We were told that we were checked in for both of our two weeks. Yet we had a maid asking us when we were leaving. And if we hadn't stopped to check, we would have been locked out of our room!

One last tip. Dont go on a sales presenntation no matter what. They have a system that ties uou up for most of the day. Dont sacrifice a day of your vacation! They are very hard sell; they wear you down, promise you the mokn. Much of it doesnt really pan out. We were outright lied to about our current membership. Know this. You have a 5day recission period guaranteed by law. The mayan sales management was excellent and easily rescinded the upgrade contract. If we want out of our original contract, we can simply call mayan member services and they will send the paperwork.

Room Tip: Request to be close to the pools and boutique so you won't have to hike as much. Some palace gu...
