“Fantastic relaxing holiday”
Reviewed 14 August 2013 via mobile

El Dorado Royale was a fantastic holiday from start to finish. The resort grounds are beautifully clean and well maintained. The jacuzzi suites are clean and spacious, and the mini bar restocked daily. The pools are large, warm and have plenty of beach beds/loungers and drinks from the swim up bars flow throughout the day. Buffet breakfasts are great with a huge selection and menu choices. We tried all the restaurants and gourmet corners and the food is delicious. It was nice having a dress code for dinner as the restaurants were very nice. The beach bars were relaxing, martini and Bellini bars smart and the club house had plenty of seats, a nice bar and good acts though out the week and films every night. The beach is sandy and the water clear and warm, fun to swim, snorkel and kayak in. You get used to the sand bags (artificial reefs). The in resort activities are good yoga, pot painting and bike tour (wear mosquito repellent!). The staff are amazing so friendly, helpful and always say hello. We booked some trips with in resort v-aquatics and they were really helpful we enjoyed: Coco Bongos in Playa Del Carmen, swimming with dolphins at Maroma beach and the Tulum and Xel Ha trip and finally golf at playacar, all were great. You could happily stay on the resort and its size makes it feel uncrowded and very relaxed. The salt water pool and beach beds on the sand were a lovely way to spend a day. A really fantastic resort I thoroughly recommend.

It is hard for me to go into too much detail because when I think back about the trip I just keep coming to the conclusion that everything from the rooms to food was PERFECT! Our taste buds were always satisfied with the variety of food/restaurants that are available. The staff is constantly working hard and greeting everyone with a smile. I did not come across one rude employee during the entire 6 night trip.

We spent most of our time at the main pool enjoying the perfect weather and swim up bar. All of the bartenders were always friendly and courteous. They always made me the perfect drink every time :)

Overall, we have nothing to complain about. We are very grateful for the help of Beach Bum Vacations in booking our trip. A special thank you to Mindy for making everything happen!

Room Tip: Choose an ocean view room - even though the trees block most of the view of the ocean, it does put y...

Apologies for this long review - just got home and still riding high on Holiday Euphoria!!

We treated ourselves to this luxurious holiday to celebrate our 25th Wedding anniversary and my 50th Birthday and it was wonderful. Right from being greeted in the elegant, cool, sweet-smelling lobby with a glass of Champagne and a seam-free check in, through two weeks of heaven, to hassle-free last day check out.
We are perfectionists and are well travelled and we could not find fault in this resort (a few suggestions maybe – but not fault).

The resort itself is spotlessly clean, beautifully kept (constantly being tended to) and very pleasantly laid out with winding pathways through the shady coconut trees to the various bars, pools & restaurants and the beach. Our room was a junior suite with a balcony, and was cleaned perfectly every day. We considered the swim-up suites and in some areas of the resort we felt it would’ve been great, but our room was in a very private spot and that suited us well. The resort takes a few days to navigate, everything is nicely spread out so you don’t ever feel that it’s overcrowded, there are plenty of quiet and peaceful areas and the bars are sociable and fun when you want that.

The staff are consistently polite, friendly and super-helpful, nothing is too much trouble. My preferred table staff are those who don’t feel the need to trot out the catch phrases and the offers of Tequila with breakfast, but hey – we’re old farts! Our particular favourites were Angel in La Cabana, Giovanni in Rincon Mexican, Eduardo in Kampai and Pedro in Italian Casitas – all perfect gentlemen.

Food – well, if you’re not a foodie, this place is wasted on you! Breakfast buffet at Cocotel is amazing, fresh and plentiful from 6.30am right through to the end at 11am with a wonderful variety of everything you could ever want (and more). We enjoyed some great lunches at La Isla, and for snacks La Cabana was good – my husband liked JoJo’s too. Dinner at the Kampai was top notch as was Italian at Casitas, my favourite place was Rincon Mexican, and we also enjoyed the dinner theatre at Fuentes (you need to book in advance for that).
Over all, the food is great quality, beautifully presented, fresh and tasty. Go ahead and order extra entrees and desserts, it’s all there for the tasting! We regularly had three starters between the two of us!

In response to some of the (few but scathing) negative reviews here (and I never usually respond in this way, I believe each person has a unique experience and is fully entitled to their opinion), but I can’t understand how anyone could be so critical of this resort!

1. The food is great, freshly prepared so no, it won’t be as quick as a Big Mac coming through – you are on holiday… chill! We only had to wait for a table once in two weeks and that was for 40 minutes (in a cocktail bar upstairs, being served champagne and snacks) man, that was tough….
2. Wine is not boxed, we were served from a bottle, with a choice EVERY meal.
3. Cocktails aren’t made to get you drunk, they are a refreshing poolside/beach front drink with a little buzz, if you want to get smashed – drink Tequila shots. Simple.
4. Not one bad experience of poor service in two weeks (apart from a slightly grumpy cashier in La Lolita gift shop) Big deal.
5. Drunk Americans? The Americans were charming, interesting and sociable. Didn’t once encounter any anti-social behaviour at any time, due to too much alcohol from anyone.
6. Sandbags – these are constructed from Geotextile to create reefs which support and sustain wildlife and protect the beach, they’re not ugly at all and if you look at them for what they are there for – you’ll find them beautiful. Without them, you wouldn’t be snorkelling through shoals of tropical fish and watching the pelicans land to preen themselves.
7. Sun beds? Plenty, no problem finding somewhere at any time of day. Obviously if you want a particular spot, get up earlier and claim it, but there really are lots of nice places available all day – as I said, the resort never felt overcrowded.
8. Tipping – yes you should tip and no you don’t get second rate service if you don’t. We didn’t tip for every single drink and there was no difference in service or attitude at all. Break your cash down in to 20 pesos or one dollar notes for tips –we heard that the average wage in Mexico for servers etc. is 5 bucks a day, don’t be stingy, share the love!

Overall we had a great time at the El Dorado Royale in Riviera Maya. The hotel was lovely and our room was extremely nice. The bed and bedding was great, very comfortable. Our only complaint was that one day, housekeeping still had not cleaned our room when we came back from an excursion at 3pm. Being very tired, we tried to nap but were awakened twice by housekeeping wanting to clean our room despite the Do Not Disturb sign being posted on the door. They also failed to restock the mini bar that day. They also say on their website that they have a shuttle to Playa Del Carmen. what they don't tell you is that it only runs on certain days and not until 6pm and you have to stay in town until 10pm. Taxis cost $50 round trip which is ridiculous because it's only a few miles into town. Other than that, our stay was great. Food was ok, the beach was beautiful and the sheer size of the resort made it feel very uncrowded. We had a wonderful couples massage at the spa.

Room Tip: Our room had no view. Try to upgrade to a room with at least a partial ocean view.

Not only is El Dorado Royale a beautiful resort but their customer service is above and beyond anything I have experienced. The staff in all levels were friendly, responsive, and committed to ensuring that my staff was as pleasant as possible. Our first night there we sat down for dinner and our waiter anticipated our need before we had to ask. We paid for one of the additional adventure activities, utilizing the wave runners. Our scheduled appointment was pushed back due to a scheduling miscommunication and they compensated us with a free second shortened run. The resort is spacious with a variety of delicious restaurants. The beaches were pristine and the grounds well maintained. Our room was beautiful and even after they cleaned they would come back for turn down service. I loved that you had to pay extra for wi-fi because it kept me from falling into the digital trap. I was disconnected and I loved it. I would gladly go back to El Dorado Royale.

Room Tip: We chose an ocean room, which is nice but there are palm tress that obscure the view. Even with the...

I don't normally write reviews but after this holiday I felt I had to! It was paradise! It was our honeymoon and we had times where we could find a secluded spot and enjoy time together but we also spent time meeting others and doing activities! The service was incredible from all staff and we were made to feel like royalty!
(An the Thompson reps were awesome aswell, supportive and friendly!)

This property is extensive and the variety of food and swimming and entertainment options was wonderful. The food and drink options were of varying quality and could use some improvement, but we certainly did not suffer! We most enjoyed the Asian restaurant and least enjoyed Jo-Jos. The service was decent throughout, though with such a large property they cannot always be there when you want something. The personal concierges were great and helpful for solving even odd requests. We enjoyed the swim-up room a lot! The beach is pretty but not much for swimming (rocks). It is odd that use of the internet is quite expensive. Yoga classes in the morning were nicely challenging. And lastly, the spa is great and the water therapy stellar!

Room Tip: Swim-up is fun!
