Have just returned from a very enjoyable trip to the imperial hotel in Kos. The hotel is ranked as five Thomsons T's but is in fact 4 stars. The lobby of the hotel is very impressive on first sight and check in was both swift and well organised.
Our hotel room was quite dated, the wicker furniture was tired and the television absolutely ancient! We felt that supplying a headboard for the third bed in the room would have been beneficial. On the positive side we were pleasantly surprised to find that the spacious safe in the room was free, as was the wifi. Sadly we quickly found that the complimentary slippers were necessary as the floors were absolutely filthy. We requested an extra pillow at reception that was never supplied.
The food and service in the a la carte restaurant was fantastic and well worth a visit if not just to sample the unbelievable puddings! The food at the daily buffets (breakfast, lunch and dinner) was aimed at the masses and therefore quite bland. The attitude of the staff at the buffets was quite mixed and varied between very friendly and approachable to downright rude and surly! That said it was always easy to get served for drinks in the restaurant. As a guest who had paid for all inclusive I was most irritated to find that our 'all inclusive' option stopped at 5 o'clock on the day we checked out as our flight was not until midnight and therefore we did not leave for the airport until 9:15.
The pools were beautiful, the three pools catered for different tastes and ages and there were plentiful padded sunbeds. The sunbeds were reserved quite early in the morning so if you have a particular spot in mind you may wish to reserve before breakfast as most people do. In the hotel welcome package it stated that anyone reserving a sunbed would have their towel removed, however this was not the case.
The animation team try extremely hard and certainly provide lots of fun activities for children as part of their crèche service 'grecoland'. As a party of adult travellers we found the entertainment to be a bit of a mixed bag the 'bought in' entertainment was of a reasonable standard the hotel created entertainment was frankly a bit embarrassing!
All in all we enjoyed our stay, apart from the day that the pool bar exploded! We had left the pool bar possibly 10 minutes before we heard a large bang and lots of people screaming. There had been an explosion in the kitchen of the pool bar and the front serving hatch and roof caught fire. It took around an hour for the fire to be brought under control during which slightly alarmingly there was no sign of either a fire alarm or the fire brigade. From that day on lunch was served in the hotel restaurant while the pool bar was rebuilt by a team of builders, which was a little noisy (but understandable). We were just pleased that if we believed the hotel none of the staff had been injured (this felt quite unbelievable considering the speed and ferocity of the fire.)
