I am so thankful to have found this hidden gem in one of the most remote places in the world! Tipolo Beach Resort had that laid-back diver vibe, mixed with a day-time full of local activities & a nightlife fit for every type.
Location: Tipolo is a small resort situated along the sea wall of Moalboal. Getting there gets a little interesting after you get off the main road. There is a bit of a bumpy ride for about 10 minutes along an unpaved road until you reach the actual beach town of Moalboal. Here you will find dive shops, resorts, restaurants, bars, street food, whale watching excursions, etc. It's a hidden one-road town that has it all and Tipolo is at the center of it all! Also, about a 15 minute tuk-tuk ride to White Beach.
Arrival: Upon our arrival we were greeted by the owner who welcomed us to Moalboal and got us right into our room. Our room was very neat and tidy and obviously cleaned from the previous stay. Once we had a moment to put down our backpacks we went wandering around the resort grounds and were greeted by friendly neighbors and were taken away by the "coolness" of Tipolo's design and location. Right away we noticed the small rocky boardwalk that you can walk onto that extends out into the ocean. There's an abandoned bar in the center of the courtyard that was great to socialize at. The restaurant started to get busy for dinner service which got us motivated to get ready and go exploring! Great start!
Room: Our room was closest to the beach on the left side. The decor was dated, but were big into surf resorts so it gave us that laid-back vibe. No frills, you know? When you're supposed to be spending your time exploring the island and going on adventures, what do you really need in your room? If you're looking for an actual "Resort" then I would suggest going to an actual "Resort" at "Resort" pricing. This is a *Budget Resort*. We had plenty of room to organize all our stuff from our backpacks and felt safe leaving all our electronics and the drone. We had a fridge in our room that was refilled everyday and sometimes twice a day (we drink a lot). The bathrooms we're small, but no bigger than mine at home so I can't complain. The shower wasn't very powerful, but it worked. I found most of my showers in the Philippines to be less than par, but I just reminded myself of where in the world I was, appreciated where I come from, and moved on with my day. The beds were minimal, however comfortable. We did not encounter noise at night, however we went out like party animals so we slept pretty hard. Overall our stay was comfortable and accommodating.
Restaurant: The breakfast was included in our stay and was always a good start to our day. We're not big eaters in the morning so having a basic eggs and toast kind of breakfast was just what we needed. The ladies were very nice to us and found it humorous that we had beers for breakfast. We ate dinner there on our last night and had some kind of "cook-it-yourself" seafood dish that you cooked over a burner. It was a fun twist on a plated dish and something we've never tried before. We ended up chatting with the owner that night and had a few laughs. He also bought us a round of beers. Thank you again!
Planet Action Adventures: A+ experience! Planet Action is the adventure tours that are related to the resort. We went with them on a Canyoning trip that was phenomenal! They were fun, super safe, and experts at moving the group along. There were times where we thought we were going to have to wait a long time for the group, but they basically split the group in half and got us moving quickly and onto the hot springs in no time! There was a seafood buffet at the end of the day, cooked by the tour guides, that was delicious! They also allowed us and some friends we met on the trip to detour for Kawasan Falls. They dropped us off there to spend a few hours while they took the rest of the crew back to Tipolo. We hopped on a bus for a few dollars once we were done. This was an amazing adventure and I would recommend this crew at Planet Action for any Moalboal experience!
Overall: I've read several pages of reviews on Tipolo and I can see why it got some bad reviews, and I can tell that it's mostly people looking for a different experience. Tipolo is perfect for people spending most of there day out exploring and most of their night out socializing. We enjoyed the local street food, bars, expats, & the disco on Saturday night! The staff was wonderful to us! Maybe because we don't have a care in the world when we're on vacation, but I believe you get what you give. If you are looking for a place to relax, socialize with fellow travelers, scuba dive, within walking distance to street food & cool bars then Tipolo is the place for you!
