Lovely hotel & lake but hire a car

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 17, 2024via mobile
Pros
Genuinely charming hotel
Really fabulous staff - could not have been nicer or more helpful
Beach club by the lake is wonderful - very clean, quiet, safe & the water is divine on a hot day. You do have to cross a busy road so have your wits about you. Beach is a bit stoney - suggest sea shoes.
Rooms very clean & modern - they were refurbished during Covid so very nice
Very good restaurant called Bella Vista next to hotel with a lovely terrace overlooking the lake.

Cons
The major downside not the fault of the lovely hotel but it’s the transport situation. There is not a lot to do in Meina & you will want to visit Stresa for dinner or sightseeing. But the train was not working. There is only one bus an hour. And the last bus leaves Stresa at 7pm. Which leaves taxis. But taxis are incredibly expensive. €50 ONE way for a 6 mile/20 minute journey. And they are really difficult to book as so few of them. We almost got stranded in Stresa one evening after dinner. It’s a real shame there aren’t more buses. They are also often late & can get very busy. All very stressful. Would advise hiring a car.
WiFi is very patchy. Cuts out all the time.

Overall, a lovely quiet hotel worth a stay but beware the transport situation!

Room Tip: Do go on the three island trip from Stresa

Pros - great position overlooking the lake and rooms and communal area very clean and well presented. Excellent choice for breakfast and good service overall.
Nice pool area and facilities at Lake beach front.
Cons - we couldn't find an open restaurant to eat at within walking distance and there is a main road which makes it difficult to walk. We had to take a taxi to Arona (c 5km and c8 mins max and it cost 20 euros each way!
Nearby Meina very quiet and nothing opened! Nearby Meina beach club looked lovely and according to website should have been opened but closed!
Try Aldo Pizzeria in Piazza del Popolo - fantastic!

Room tip: If you like walking out for dinner - double check restaurants locally Nice hotel (not cheap) but definitely wrong location in our opinion

The pros:
Very nice mansion with well maintained pool and beach areas. Ample free parking available. Luggage was brought to the room. Friendly staff. Our room had been renovated recently. Good airconditioning. There’s a nice looking outside lake view restaurant however we haven’t tried.

The to be improved:
Upon arrival the restaurant was closed for lunch (yet there were some small dishes available). In between the hotel and the lake/beach there is a busy road. There is no bar service on the beach and as far as I know also not at the pool area (and at the same time the hotel states you can’t consume self brought items…). All in all small things. Rooms with balconies would be great.

We really enjoyed this hotel. We had a large room with a balcony on the third floor with lake views. The room was clean and modern. Breakfasts were wonderful! Wait staff were polite and professional. We also enjoyed the restaurant (dinner); we found prices to be very reasonable and the food delicious. The little beach is only accessible by crossing the windy, somewhat treacherous street, but didn't have any problems getting to it safely. The lake was a lovely temperature (much warmer than the pool).

Room tip: Rooms on the third floor with lake views were quiet and spacious.

A place of true Agatha Christie charm.
Just beside the lake, this hotel and its staff will give you the nicest of times.
It’s a bit worn through the years but it has kept its charm and magic.
The multilingual staff is as good as it gets and the restaurant gives you an Italian cousine with international touch. Absolutely in my taste.
All the marble, the silver cutlery and the cheer size of the place make you think that Hercule Poirot would be as happy as ever here.
And if it’s good enough for him - it’s good enough for me!

Room tip: Close the windows at night. There is a railway running along the lake… You will NOT miss the train if the windows are open!

Definitely not a 4 star hotel, I have some perplexities in rating it even as a 3 star. And the snottiness of the lady owner & 2 helpless receptionists is appalling! Get your feathers down, ladies, as this is a true castle in ruins! The only great thing about this decadent (I mean, literally falling apart) hotel is the lake view, for which they get no credit, it’s nature at its best that helps you keep your business running.
Crooked and dusty chandeliers in the hall, rooms overcrowded with outdated furniture, beds will kill you in case you have back issues, dirty & dusty carpet where it’s easy to trip and get hurt, tiny bathroom, again, watch you head & feet as there’re corners ready to hurt you as you turn around. I still got a bump on my head from the iron made towel tray, dangerously positioned at nose level. Can’t imagine elderly patrons having a safe stay here. Pool full of dead insects. Ok, we’re surrounded by trees and vegetation but how about getting it cleaned? How about putting some chloride to prevent infections? There were 4 inches of black dirt where the pool’s water reached its limit. BTW, the pool’s water must come from a polar iceberg, it’s freezing beyond imagination, not even people who’re used to Baltic sea water could take a dip. Sun beds looked like they had never been cleaned, by the look of them and the cushions were probably soaked in sweat by the million customers who preceded our stay. Beach is tiny, same filthy sunbeds and suicidal in terms of getting to it, as you must cross a high speed traffic road -behind a curve!-with no stop signs, so it’s all at your own discretion whether to live or die. Food: acceptable breakfast is the only decent meal of the day. We tried their dinner and lunch and it was a forgettable experience. Food was bland and made with low quality ingredients. Plus, it was quite expensive for ratio quality/quantity. Wild parking by German & French guests with no care for others further aggravated our feelings towards this establishment. The only positive thing about this place, as I said before, it’s the lake view and you want to move on towards other hotels with the same view and a professional attitude towards their guests. Avoid!
