“Good value family holiday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

Good value family hotel. All the staff were very helpful as Virgin had booked the wrong room for us. It was all sorted out in a couple of hours. The beach is fine and the staff will bring drinks to you. You can walk 1 min to the beach of the next door hotel if you want a more desserted spot and to swim and snorkel. Plus they put on a free bus to take you to a bigger beach 10 mins drive away where you get free drinks at the beach club, and you can hire jet ski and pick up boats to go on trips. This beach has the perfect sand and no rocks in the sea but is therefore no good for snorkeling.
A must to bring out insect repellant and mossy killer spray to spray the room as very bad bites can occur.
Your rep can hire a car for you and this is a must - drive round the island for a cople of day it costs @$65 a day.
Food in the hotel can be a bit the same every day they need to add more varity to the main course as every night it was a choice of chicken or fish and the green salad bowl always looked tired and could have been fresher. They should add a BBQ night like they do in hotels in Grenada and Tobago.
All in all good value for money and very good staff service and the kids love the swimming pool. Kids club could be more proactive in getting kids together as doing a kids party or something so kids will meet up and mix. Spa too expensive to use more expense than my gym spa here in London. So I was disappointed about that and was not surprised no one was using it. Gift shop was very pricey too.

Stayed for 10 days in March and felt for the price we could have done better! Virgin Holidays need to take a long hard look at what guests are saying about this hotel as is very much a work in progress. I must say on their defence our room was excellent, we booked a superior pool view suite and it was just that, positioned on two floors which would have been excellent for a family having extra facilites on both floor but great for the two of us too! Our biggest dissapointment was the fact that the beach was small but good but in no way was it suitable for swimming or even paddling, stony and rough and the current extremely strong. Dont go with the idea of swimming in lovely warm water at this hotel, There was a pool (small) which hardly anyone used because the majority of people took the shuttle bus to a more suitable beach each day ! I did not book this holiday to sit on a bus to have a swim VERY frustrating. When talking to a member of staff they pointed out the fact there was a pool right through the gardens which was true but only really good if you were a Dolphin as it was narrow and windey.
Food at Drifters Beach bar was ok but we preffered to book at the resteruant which had good choice but very slow didnt mind that too much but on two nights didnt stay for our dessert as had been sitting for two hours.Must say that our Virgin rep was excellent and gave good advice and help to book trips around the Island. We have been to qiute a few Island but definately wont return to The Savannah Beach or Barbados come to think of it. Much better Islands to visit.

Room Tip: Pay more if possible for the Pool view suites but avoid Plantation Rooms completely - small and very...

We stayed for a week from 16th March. Whilst we had a good time we preferred St Lawrence Gap ( where we had previously stayed ). We booked a couple of weeks prior to departure and found that the price on Virgin's website changed up and down virtually daily, so keep a look out and move quickly if the price reduces. We were contacted prior to departure with an offer to upgrade to a better room and chose an Ocean View Suite and had no regrets. We felt ( as others have mentioned ) that this is very much a " work in progress " but as it is, represents excellent value for Barbados. Don't expect 5 star service, but pleasant and mostly friendly staff who are trying to understand the expectations of older English patrons, many of whom are well travelled.
With more training and an eye for noticing what needs doing, I feel sure they will get there.

I booked this holiday through Virgin Holidays
I also wish to advise you that the hotel is nowhere near to 3V grading that Virgin have given it. There are numerous short comings here are few ;
We were advised that the hotel was recently refurbished, however the bathroom was very old, dirty toilet bowel, handbasin and bath. The refrigerator was dirty, smelly and at least 30 years old and very noisy so we were unable to use it.

Menu is very small with not a lot of options and when terrines were emptied were not replenished for a considerable time if at all. When staff were notified of this I was made to feel it was not their job to respond.

Service in Rachaels restaurant was very slow.

Service at the bar is very slow and at time some drinks were not available as the bar was not restocked.

The spa and hairdresser that is advertised, was not available.

There was no evidence of the family games room.

The beach was dirty and not very inviting. I am aware that it is a public beach but is advertised as used by guests and as such, surely should be maintained by the hotel. Other hotels in the vicinity did this daily.

Whilst there I had my mobile telephone stolen. There were other incidents at the hotel that involved thefts during my stay.
When speaking to my phone provider about the incident, they advised me that the phone number was being used as we spoke this was instantly cancelled. The phone had not been used whilst I was there, it appears that it was only used upon my return home. This leads me to conclude that there may well be a member of the hotel staff involved with the theft knowing that I had left.
I believe that Virgin should make the security staff at the Savannah Beach Hotel, aware of this possibility.

It made our holiday one to forget rather than one we truly looked forward to and be memorable. My wife and I have never been so disappointed upon our return from a holiday.

Don't let the slow service and lack of organisation at reception put you off. We stayed for 3 nights prior to a cruise and enjoyed our stay here. The room was good and so was the food in all the restaurants we tried however, we would have liked an information pack in our the room so that we knew what times the restaurants were open etc. The beach in front of the hotel was not a problem for us and you can walk in either direction to other stunning beaches. Carlisle Bay is just a 10 minute walk and about 25 minutes walk will take you into Bridgetown. After our cruise we paid for the 'check in and chill out' service back at the Savannah Hotel but it was a total shambles and waste of money - no seats on the plane available for some passengers and boarding cards missing for others. Several of us ended up having to pay for exit seats in order to sit together and ended up queuing back at airport for boarding cards. Whole process took 2 hours from leaving ship to setting out to the beach. Hardly a chill out experience! (This was not the fault of the hotel, but Virgin Holidays)

Just returned from an 11 night holiday at the Savannah and were very pleased. We were a party of 2 adults and 2 kids (12 and 4yrs) and felt the savannah was great for us. We booked through the co-op travel agent and travelled with Virgin. Online check in didn't work for us as the site kept telling me my kids DOB's were wrong (I think I would know!!) Anyhow it wasn't a concern as when we arrived at Gatwick airport there were 10 virgin check in desks open and we walked straight in.

Great flight lots of in flight entertainment for the kids and a K-ID bag for then which had things to keep them busy. No-one told us at booking that we had to pre-order kids meals so ours had to make do with adult meals (we made sure to book for the return journey)

We had to queue for ages at Barbados airport to get through passport control and it was really hot so we were well pleased to see the Virgin rep offering complimentary bottles of water outside the airport. Transfer took about 15 minutes and check in at the Savannah was quick with rum and fruit punches on arrival.

We had a family poolside room on the 2nd floor - it is a bit of a maze to start with working out which stairs lead to where but we soon had this sorted. Lovely that our balcony steps were right at the poolside however these can be slippery and also the area around the pools are very slippery when wet (which is most of the time) We saw alot of kids running and falling and in other resorts staff sweep the water away with squidgy mops - but there were just loads of puddles and wet floor signs around. The room was very spacious with lots of storage. This was cleaned every day and fresh towels provided. It would have been nice to have had an info pack in the room such as informing guests what time dinner is served, where to get clean beach towels, when to order packed lunches for day trips (we tried ordering at reception at 5.30pm but were told it should have been ordered by 5pm), opening times of the kids club etc. All these things we had to ask staff or other guests - it wasn't a problem but would have been useful having the info at hand in our rooms.

Food: Breakfast was lovely lots of fresh food - cooked, cold meats cheese etc and eggs cooked how you like this was in Rachels restaurant. Lunch was down at the beach bar - Drifters. Great selection burgers hot dogs rolls chips and lovely salads. also a nice selection of fish, meat pasta. Evening meals - either booked in Rachels restaurant or down at the beach bar. We ate in Rachels a few times where you choose from a menu. We had great service the 1st few times but then after this the staff seemed to struggle a bit - eg not ready for our booking time and service quite slow. Once we had to leave before dessert came as the kids were tired and couldn't wait. However the food was nice. The beach bar buffet in the evenings was more suited to adults or 'non fussy kids' no burgers or hot dogs during the evening meal however you could order pizza but we found this took up to 3/4 hour to arrive and then the kids were past it. It wouldn't be difficult to cater for the kids at the evening meal by providing the same burgers, chips and hot dogs as they do for lunchtimes. Anyway we didn't go hungry although some evenings our youngest ate only bread rolls and butter! There were lots of birds around at breakfast and lunch times and if plates of uneaten food was left out the birds were there in a flash!! This wasn't a problem for us as we always made sure someone stayed at the table on 'birdwatch!' However we did notice some bird droppings on the backs of the chairs

The Staff: we had read reviews before going that the staff didn't 'gel' we found this totally untrue - the staff all seemed to get on really well and were very friendly towards us. Always saying hello or talking to the kids. I think if you treat people with respect you will get it back.

Kids Club: We were so pleased that the kids club and gaming room was open on the 3rd day of our stay. The ladies are very good with the kids and there are lots of things to do - 2 upstairs rooms with toys, games and activities including a wii and xbox and a downstairs room with air hockey, table tennis, table football, basketball. All air conditioned so great when the sun is too hot. Our kids loved going

The Beach: I think it depends on what you want from the beach. At low tide you can walk out into the sea and it is safe but at high tide hang on to your younger kids!! We took beach shoes to walk out into the rocky part but there is a sandy part which has been cleared of rocks. We like the fact that the beach was 'right there' and the drinks were a few steps away - loads of sunbeds on the beach. We did take the shuttle to Carlise Bay (10 mins away) and although a very pretty beach we found this too hot and the bar on the beach would not serve my eldest son. We liked the Savannah beach due to the closeness to the hotel. It is still a pretty view with the clear blue and turquoise sea. we also saw some baby turtles swimming in the sea. The Savannah staff also come out to the beach to get your drinks order. Whilst we were there one of the big tree branches fell down overnight. They taped off this area and later in the day some men came so saw off some of the other branches which may have fallen off so now there is not as much shade on the savannah beach!

The Pools: we loved the pools - yes a little small but the one which meanders down through the hotel is lovely. Lots of shade by the bridges and seating in the pool. The pool by the beach bar is also nice but the beds are limited. We had to get up early to get a bed. The pools areas are not swept and cleaned very often - the pool beds stay out over night and are not stacked up and we found that drinks spilled from the day before were still there the next morning.

Trips: we did a few trips - a catamaran sunset cruise is really good the guys on the boat are good fun and snorkling is good too. The submarine is also well worthwhile and Harrison's cave.

Lovely that Virgin offer 'check in and chill out' as standard at the Savannah - you take your cases to reception a few hours before you fly and they put the labels on your cases, give you your boarding passes and take you cases to the airport. You then follow on a bit later with your hand luggage. We thought this was great although make sure you know what you are taking as hand luggage with the liquid limits and pack the rest in your cases (shampoo etc) . Also if you are packing wet pool clothes in your hand luggage make sure that you have enough space.

We were overall very happy with the Savannah and hope to return again - We've never been on a holiday where everything has been as we expected we are easy going and just get on with it whilst on holiday. Yes there were minor things but it certainly didn't spoil our holiday. And the Savannah is new at the 'all inclusive' and is making good progress from what we saw - I'm sure trip adviser reviews are being read and acted upon and will be even better for our next holiday.

Thanks to all the staff for a great 1st visit to Bardados

Room Tip: Ask the cleaning ladies for beach towels and order your packed lunches by 5pm the day before
