April 5-12th. Second stay at this resort. It's small and every thing is convenient. Vacation that was what I expected and more. There have been a few changes, bit of a refurbish last year. Grounds and pool are immaculate. Staff does what ever they can to make you happy.
First time travelling by myself, felt very secure and well taken care of. Great room, simple and very clean.
I was there to decompress and rejuvenate. The BEAUTIFUL BEACH is what I went for.
No problem with chairs. Lots of activities to do if you so choose on and off resort.
Made lots of new friends, even got invited to a beautiful wedding.
Food is good lots to choose from.
All in all it was once again a wonderful holiday.
I will go back.

Room Tip: I like top floor, although its a hike its good exercise.

My husband and I went to this hotel with a group of friends from April 5-12. Over all we had a great experience, the hotel was beautiful, the beach was amazing (we had no problems getting chairs), the people were fabulous. It was a completely stress free holiday :) I celebrated my birthday while I was there and they went out of their way in the Italian restaurant for me, had a cake and everything . Thank you all for that.
The hotel was very clean, I had to wait in line for a couple of meals if I went to a fresh cooked station...but I was on vacation, where did I need to be? nowhere, I did not mind a few minutes :) the food was worth the wait, the pizza was good, the pasta was good, the chicken stir fry was incredible! The little restaurant by the beach served great chicken at lunch too.
There was a lady in the main hotel lobby bar Mylene (I think this is spelled wrong I am sorry) she was beyond sweet, made great capaccio and chatted with me while she worked (I am an early riser, not many people up and about that time of the day) Once she got the door opened so I could use the computer to speak to my Mom (priceless) We enjoyed quite a few of the bartenders again sorry for the spellings but Sergei, Edgar, the bus boy from the main lobby, lady in the pool bar & the fine gentlemen in the beach bar and the sports bar...kept us laughing all week.
We had one day when the water person did not get to us, we asked a staff member about it and they came right back with water and beer. I really have no complaints about my stay at all...the only things I could possibly complain about are there are small flies (like no-seeums) but that is to be expected with all of the fresh water around the resort, fountain in lobby and turtle pond close, I used my bug spray and had no problems after the first encounter, and the beds were hard to me.
My husband and his friends are return guests, I think I will be too :D
cheers!

We have travelled widely both in the Caribbean and Europe and he have visited Cuba twice before (Varadero) and had wonderful holidays. This year we wanted to visit a different resort, and after reading various reviews we chose Melia Cayo Guillermo expecting a 5* premium resort. We have been left totally disappointed.
We stayed from Apr 2nd -12th. On arrival we were asked to take a seat in reception even though we arrived with only one other couple. After waiting about 15mins we asked if there was a problem and was told someone would see us shortly, eventually we were told that the hotel was overbooked and we were to be downgraded to the 4* Iberostar next door ! We spent 4 nights at the Iberostar before a room was found back at the Melia. We make special mention here of Carmen, who tried very hard to resolve the situation and remained cheerful throughout. We remain very grateful for her efforts.

The room we were given in the ground floor in block 1xxx at the Melia smelt when we first went in and did not seem to be fully decorated, although all the facilities worked OK and the beds and furniture were comfortable.
We mainly ate at the buffet restaurant but it seemed to be understaffed or insufficient for the number of guests. On some evenings, there were queues for the buffet restaurant waiting for tables to become available and even when seated we often waited several minutes just for water or coffee to be offered, and simple requests for such as a cup of tea often entailed a long wait or needed repeated requests. Meanwhile some other guests seemed to get 'star' treatment as soon as they entered. There was usually a wait of anything up to 15 mins at some cooking stations so we did not always eat together. One night we ate at the International restaurant and the meal was very poor; the pate starter was totally tasteless, a main vegetarian course of stuffed pancake was completely inedible (cold) and the so-called chocolate mousse was simply chocolate flavoured cream piped from a tube.
It was impossible to get a sunbed on the beach or around the pool unless you were prepared to get up before 7 am and put down a towel, the pool area was generally very noisy with little shade. There seemed to be no quieter areas to sit and relax either during the day or in the evening around the bars.
We will not be returning to this area...

We stayed at MCG for a week, from March 20 to March 27... and we just loved it!!!!
I read lots of reviews and I've seen lots of pictures before going there, and even knowing what to expect I was really impressed with the high quality service, the beach and the grounds. We really had an excellent time!!! We liked the smallness of the resort…

Initially, when we arrived, they gave me room which wasn't exactly what I expected to be. Very crowded (3 big beds and a small one), some broken furniture, too close to all the entertainment... I went back and ask for another room. And they upgraded to a bungalow... it was awesome!!!! We had 3006, with our own backyard and hammock (which was a blast for the kids :)). The only issue was that we didn't have hot water for the first couple of days. They kept fixing it, but it will work only until next day and they will come to fix it again. The customer service and the front desk people were very nice and helpful. Every time they will send the plumber to fix my hot water and offered me to change my room (to another bungalow), but I didn't want to cause more trouble :)

The rooms, although outdated are kept very clean… and the maids are very good with the towel art. Almost every day another design will wait for us in our room.

I've seen Eidel around the hotel, always busy, very nice and helpful. One of my friends's daughter was her b-day, and Eidel helped her out with the celebration. For our anniversary, when we booked the a la carte, I told the customer service guy and he was nice enough to have a cake for the desert and a bottle of champagne. They were constantly trying to make us happy.

We made friends with one of the gardeners... I don't know his name, he is the one around the bungalows close to the sports bar. Always very nice with the kids, giving them coconuts, flowers, shells... Before our departure, he waited for me with the small bouquet of roses :)

The lady for the kids club was were nice... my daughter went there almost every day for different activities. The highlight of these activities was a 2 hours ride with the pony carriage. She was so happy... :)

The shows and entertainers are the best I’ve seen so far... and the lady from the mini disco (Jenny, I think) was very, very nice... they organized shows for the kids, having them dressed up in costumes, practicing the routine :) 2 times they did some show where the kids were the dancers :):)

There were many activities, around the pool and on the beach (dance lessons, aqua fit, volleyball, bingo, etc…). They have archery lessons, as well…

What else? The food is nothing to complain. There were enough choices for all the meals. Sometimes there were big lines for scrambled eggs, pancakes, pasta... and sometimes we would need to wait for 10-15 minutes because the buffet was full for dinner... but again, this is the same everywhere we've been so far... and we were in vacation, so no need to rush :)

My husband played tennis with Fidel, the tennis coach. He is a great guy... and Ramon from the beauty salon is very nice as well. While he was doing my daughter's braids, he was discussing with my husband about fishing :)

The beach is very nice, as is the pier. And Playa Pilar is to die for (and the food from the shack was very good…).
We went horseback riding around the laguna, and we loved it. We did go snorkeling, but we were not so impressed. No so many corrals, but this again is not the resort fault.

As a conclusion, we are thinking to go back in the summer, and eventually taking some trips, going to Moron or Ciego De Avila city...

After only few days there, we did understand why people are going back to Melia... there are the best people I met in Cuba :)

We definitely recommend this hotel!!!!

Arrived on April 3, 2012 eager to repeat the good experience (forgetting the kids) we had at Melia Cayo Coco.
The checkin was disorganized. We always get seperate but ajoining rooms as specified in the booking five weeks prior. Also I asked for something quiet. They put us ten rooms apart on the third floor directly behind the disco. I am 70. I gave the front desk checkin person $20 to find something better. Never saw him again.
The buffet food is terrible, cold, picked over, repititive and tough. The fresh cooked is a crime, pizza is a pita bread with watery vegetables, process cheese under cooked and it takes 1hour and fifteen minutes in the line up. The other lineups produce nothing more tempting.
The line ups for your morning coffee can take 30 minutes unless the rude guests jump the line waving a peso and beliving they are Trump.
Your morning shower requires you hold diverter since there is little water pressure or hot water. You need to avoid the mold deposits around the shower since i am told they can cause infections.
The air conditioner seems to work but it shakes the ceiling so sleeping with it is impossible. But then again it does drown out a bit of the disco noise.
On the way to the beach you must navigate around the broken sidewalks, missing boards on the walkways and when you arrive at the beach you must fight almost physically with the rude guests to maintain a small bit of space with some shade. Twice I was threatened with violence by drunkards while the security guards were chatting up the female guests. The piles of seaweed which of course breed and harbour the sand fleas (no see'ems) was everywhere and rarely cleaned away. The beach bar only serves rude guests that jump line ups so bring your own water or what ever a small bottle of rum is $2.50 in the tuck shop.
Dinner is usually a line up while guest groups of 10 and 20 want tables pushed together. They then proceed to get louder and louder with each glass of wine until dinner becomes an ordeal.
All in all it was a total waste of time and money and will surely avoid all Melia resorts like a root canal.

We a group of 7 couples visited Apr 5-12/12.We visited 5 years ago and will return again.I have visited Cuba 9 times(4stars) and this was our best trip so far.Everyone went out of there way to help make our stay the best. Thanks Eidel for arranging the amazing Birthday supper for our friend...the cake was delish!
Arrival: Transat Holidays delivered us safe and sound, great flight! Our rooms were not ready but a drink or two in the lobby and off to our room.We had a room on 2nd floor sharing a large balcony with some of our friends,it was our pre supper gathering spot. Our maid kept our room spotless...bug free. Our fridge always had water, beer and soda.Shower and AC worked great.

Beach: We had amazing weather the entire week, few showers at night/early morning. We spent the week on the beach or out on the beautiful peir.Always found a chair and shade when needed. The beach was cleaned every day at some point.

Grounds: The gardners work hard to keep this resort beautiful, they are very friendly.Pool was clean and always in use.

Restaurants/Bars: Buffet had a great selection of food.Never had a problem finding something to eat at any time. The bread was amazing and desserts yummy. The staff were friendly and alway at hand.We had a special Birthday supper arranged at the Italian A la catre...the food was excellent, the cake was beautiful and the band sang Happy Birthday.Thank you Eidel and staff for going above and beyond! The bars were great, the staff soon became familar with us tip or no tip.We remembered some of them from 5 years ago.The beach grill and the pool grill served yummy burgers, hot dogs and grilled ham and cheese. We were never hungry or thirsty.

This was the most stress free relaxing vacation we have had so far. Thanks to a great hotel and its hard working staff and a big thank you a group of the best friend anyone could ask for.GRACIAS!
Look forward to returning again.

Room Tip: Our room on 2nd floor was close to everything.

Recently returned from another wonderful 2-week stay at the MCG with my family - our third visit to this hotel. It was nice to see familiar faces and to make new friends. Hi Eidel, Maria, Eduardo, Jimmy, Jenia, Ismavi, David, Jose, Junior, Sergei, Tommy, Anna, Wilbur, Louis, Carlos, and many many more.

The hotel has undergone some renovations since our last visit, mostly around the pool: new pool liner, new lounging gazebos/huts around the pool, and the pool has now been separated into three sections: kiddie pool, main pool, and sit-down bar pool. We generally liked the changes but we miss being able to swim freely between the main pool and the sit-down bar pool area.

As always, service was excellent and staff were very pleasant and responsive to our occasional requests/needs. The food continues to be excellent; my daughter who is a very picky eater never went hungry. The pasta and pizzas at the Italian restaurant were amazing and the cooking stations at the buffet were very good as always. The hotel was full (overbooked in fact) which led to rather long line-ups at the cooking stations but we found that we could avoid the line-ups by simply eating a bit earlier. The pool bar still offers snacks throughout the day like hot dogs, burgers, and sandwiches and they offer limited late night snacks till 3am like sandwiches, but we miss the late night pizzas they used to offer.

The day-time entertainment staff work very hard to make our stay enjoyable. The evening entertainment has gone through fairly significant changes since our last visit with new dancers and new shows, all very fresh and professional.

We've travelled to many posh resorts throughout the Carribean and Mexico but this is the only resort that we've ever returned to. It's our home away from home. We look forward to returning again soon.
