This looks like it could be good: there's a pretty garden and eating area. But the rooms were tiny and really grotty, and the staff never spoke or smiled. The bed was horrible: stained and too short, and the bathroom was disgusting. We went to the hot springs partly so that we didn't have to go in the filthy shower at the hotel. The owner was pleasant but we saw her for 30 seconds on arrival and departure. There's nothing to drink except water, black tea or instant coffee. The food was quite nice and they had a laundry service, hence 2 stars not 1, but we didn't sleep a wink at this place and would never return.

Room Tip: Wifi was free but only in the common area, not in the room.

First of all, totally not affected by recent quakes. With that set aside and cleared, this place is the perfect hideout from your normal bustle of the city. Rooms might not be top notch, food might not be Michelin grade but its the imperfections that crafted its perfection.

Overall, you will feel at home, but in a village. Hiding from your boss? Perfect, because its not easy to find this place and you can put aside all your gadgets and go exploring the nearby estate which is also part of the homestay and go see ponies graze the fields or finding fruits that are in season.

We stayed here for two nights. After reading good reviews we were excited. The staff however were not great. They seemed not to understand English very well and were not very friendly. When asking where our room was they just pointed and said the over there. No information given. We met the owners later that night and they we very lovely and welcoming. The other staff however need some encouragement. Also there was a large group of guests with many children who ran around wildly for many hours. This was fine with me but other guests were less than impressed.

The rooms are basic but need a deep clean. Ours was full of spider webs and water leak stains. The places needs a good clean and fresh lick of paint. The shower also needs a good scrub - lots of mildew in between the tiles.

We had a car so we found the place quite easily, there were many signs at all the turns. Ranau it's self is a bit of a one horse town. Not much to see it do. A KFC and a few local restaurants. We used this as a base to visit the mountain, hot springs and the POW camps.

We stayed at Slagon's for one night (if we didn't have to catch a flight we'd definitely have stayed longer). This is a perfect place if you are a family or just want a little escape from the busy hotels in the touristic areas. I'd recommend a car if you plan to stay longer. If you do have a car it is a great location to explore everything in and around Kinabalu National Park. The family who drives the place is very warm and welcoming.

I have been a visitor to Slagon Homestay for over 3 years. Yes it is difficult to find in the dark but finding this jewel of a place is well worth the effort. The location is just amazing with a river flowing under the dining/living area bridge and you instantly feel like you are in another world. The owners and staff are always very welcoming and the food is freshly homemade and delicious. The bedrooms are comfortable and simple and the birds, insects and wildllfe make it a unique experience not to be missed.

It is 3.8km away when you see its first signboard at the main road or Ranau rown. Going deep into the village, after many turns. Frankly to say if you arrive at dark, its very hard to find when solely base on its signboard. It is located in the village, yes IN A VILLAGE where you wont find any mountain or cliffs around it. Make sure you arrive before dark.

Regarding the stay, Its very basic room. Very simple. The surrounding very homely. Its like backpackers lodge where there is a common living room, tv and dining table right above a river. Perhaps in the day or dark time, you wont feel any special but when you wake up in the morning, maybe at 6am.. Its very different.. you can feel the villagers like life.. very cold surrounding..

Reception staffs was friendly.
