“A lovely family-run hotel in a beautiful location,”
Reviewed 11 January 2012

Everything was great about this hotel, starting with the charming lady who picked us up at the Jenbach station.

(The hotel offers a free pickup from and return to Jenbach station)

The hotel is a family business, and they care about every detail. We were made very welcome by the owners, our room was lovely with a gorgeous view, and the service was excellent..

The dinners were wonderful and we were offered cooked breakfasts in addition to the traditional Austrian breakfast.

The hotel is also very close to one of the Zillertalbahn stations - the return trip on the train is very scenic.

We just wished we could have stayed for longer than two days.

We spent 1 night at the Gasthof Esterhammer on our way from Denmark to Italy, as it's close to the motorway. The owner greeted us and showed us our spotless and comfortable rooms. The look is perhaps a bit out-dated, but the friendliness, food and prices were all as they should be. We had hearty 3-course dinner and a good breakfast buffet. The pool was fine - all in all a practical and comfortable place to spend a night en route.

A family needs a bit of pampering after a drive of over 550 miles, and in a charming grown-up way, this hotel really makes you relax.
It is the little things: A great shed-garage for the car; some English speaking staff; a nice swimming pool; tea, wine or beer available in equal measure; cows with proper cowbells across the road and more.
Dinner was excellent and breakfast was as good.
Being well-travelled one gets jaundiced and critical, but this is a little gem.
We are definitely going back for a longer stay next time.

We spent two nights at Esterhammer - and so wished it had been longer. The rooms were charming, the staff friendly and helpful without being obsequious, the food was truly excellent (we'd especially recommend staying in to eat in the evening), our youngsters enjoyed the swimming pools. Classically, we left some clothes and a crucial adapter at the hotel. The staff phoned us to ask if we wanted them sent on and lo and behold! the packet was waiting for us when we got home a week later.
Strong recommendation

Having stayed here several times over the years, we just had to bring our children/spouses & grandchildren to visit in 2008. They all had a great holiday, despite one of the children developing Chicken Pox the day after arriving! Although the Graus family were having a family wedding, they went out of their way to help us. Their kindness, friendliness and family unity is wonderful to experience. The food is excellent and all the other (non-family) staff reflect the genuine niceness of the owners. Rooms are spacious and very comfortable. As an historic Inn, no-one should expect 'modernity' as that would destroy the charm and homeliness of the Esterhammer. We returned in 2009 and are booked again for 2010.

Gasthof Esterhammer offers all that anyone could wish for when holidaying in Austria. It is situated in a small hamlet very close to Jenbach, which offers easy rail transport to the rest of Austria and Europe as well as being the start point for both the Achenseebahn and Zillertalbahn steam railway routes. A must for anyone who enjoys train travel.

The Gasthof is over 400 years old and many original features have been carefully retained in this delightful Tirolean hotel. The public rooms are authentically decorated with wood panelling and traditional furnishings.

Whilst the hotel building has not changed over the years, the owners have added both outside and inside swimming pools. There is poolside seating provided and a terrace where one can enjoy a drink and a meal whilst savouring the views. Guests can also play table tennis and there is ample room for children to play in safety.

The double bedroom my husband and I had was spacious with modern ensuite facilities and a magnificent view of the mountains. The bed linen was spotlessly clean and the room was cleaned every day.

The major feature of this hotel, though, is the food. Traditional Austrian cuisine at its very best using fresh, local produce. Every meal is a delight! My husband and I stayed on a half-board basis and looked forward with great anticipation to the buffet breakfasts and 4-course Table d'Hote evening meals. My intolerance to wheat was not a problem and I was presented with a specially written menu each evening. Nothing was too much trouble.

This is a family-run establishment where attention to detail is very important. Herren Graus, father and son, speak many European languages and make all guests feel welcome and at home. Frau Graus 'organises' the kitchen and can often be seen stirring the saucepans or picking herbs in the garden. Service with a smile is the norm.

My husband and I first came to Esterhammer 40 years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed our stays here. We are looking forward to our next visit already!
