Looking to explore the Sian Kaan Biosphere, we searched for lodging options south of Tulum, Mexico. We came across Sol Caribe on several search sites and while you may think twice once you begin your journey down Route 15, Sol Caribe will be a welcome relief once you arrive. The lovely grounds welcome you, everything here is calm and serene. It is well done. One thing I can assure you, if you made reservations in Punta Allen, you'll regret not having stayed up the road at Sol Caribe. Lush and lovely flora and fauna populate the property. No matter which room you choose you can fall into in the Caribbean. If you came to get away from it all, you made the right choice. While not luxury, it is extremely accommodating. Solitude shall be yours if that is what you are seeking and it is welcome relief from a days outing in the Biosphere. The staff is friendly and eager to please. The rooms are nicely decorated in a rustic, comfortable manner. There is no a/c but you won't need it as there is always a breeze and ceiling fan to keep you cool. The restaurant is right there should you require food or beverage and true to form pays homage to local cuisine. It may not be 5 Star (nor need it be) but it is authentic and it is good. Our room was a path away from the ocean, literally 50 feet. We could sit and watch the sunrise from our palapa covered deck. It is intimate, romantic and inviting. There are palapas and beach chairs everywhere to simply take in life. If you're heading south from Tulum down Route 15 take your time, the road leaves a lot to be desired. We rented a Jeep knowing this would be the case and it served us well when we left in it what felt like a monsoon, we forded streams on the way back. As mentioned Sol Caribe will make the drive well worth it. It's not as "eco chic" as Tulum, but it is off grid, comfortable and lovely. You came here to get away from certain aspects of what Tulum has become and trust me I like Tulum, a lot. I think you'll like Sol Caribe as well. It's the best lodging from which to explore the Biosphere in my opinion.

A wonderful place to stay - it took us about 1 hour 45mins to drive in our rented car (not 4x4) from Tulum on the road to Punta Allen to Sol Caribe - the drive is exciting -great view of the sea and the lagoons. Crabs scuttling across the road and then about 8km before the end of the spit of land is Sol Caribe. It's a beautiful spot, fabulous large comfortable rooms. Staff are great, friendly and helpful. We were allowed to check out late after our snorkelling trip - which was so helpful and kind - we were able to shower and change -thanks! Food was the best we had whilst in Mexico - fresh lobster and breakfast was healthy and fresh. Tranquility and isolation were stunning. Wish we had stayed there longer. Top tip - ask the hotel to help you arrange boat/snorkelling trips from Punta Allen - it will be about half the cost of organising it from dive schools in Tulum.

We rented a car to go to Sol Caribe; not sure how we could otherwise have gotten there. The dirt road was in ok condition, of course with a lot of holes on it; but it was a good and very beautiful drive, 1 1/2 hours from the entrance to Sian Ka'an. Hotel Sol Caribe has a fantastic location in the middle of nowhere. The place is very well maintained, and the staff takes ok care of you; although I personally did not feel it was heart-felt. Everything: rooms, food, drinks, tours are significantly overpriced, much more than can be ascribed to the remote location. The food in the restaurant was good, but basic. We were a bit disappointed to find out that we could actually not go into the park itself, but could only go on boat-trips. With our active and exploring attitude we then asked to go on their full-day boat trip. This turned out to be a 500$ (USD) disaster. The boat-driver did not say one single word to us the whole day (8am to 4pm) - without being prompted to actually tell us what he was doing. Even after we very clearly asked him to do this, he still nearly not spoke. He only spoke Spanish, but that's fine with us, as we perfectly understand, and also speak a bit ourselves. It is not nice to be in a boat for a full day with such a person. Also, he did not do the things that we were told we going to do and see, e.g. catching our own fish for ceviche (depending on luck, of course). He had brought some soft drinks, biscuits etc, but even after we went snorkeling about mid-day, he did not offer us anything. So we just had to serve ourselves feeling a bit rude by doing so. In conclusion we were uncomfortable for a whole day in a boat with a man who did not say a word unless asked, and then probably not anyhow. This is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE!!!! Especially not, if you make people pay 500 Dollars!!!! We of course complained when we got back. We were offered a small fishing trip the next morning, which could have been ok, had it not been with the same boat driver... I call him 'boat driver' on purpose, as that was what he was - he was nowhere near a guide, and it is totally unacceptable to send tourists on full-day trips without a guide. Thus, tours get 0 TripAdvisor stars, had it been possible, and the hotel, restaurant, staff get 2 1/2. However, nothing is wrong with the divine location - except for all the trash on the stretches of beach that are not exactly in front of the hotel.

Everything about Sol Caribe is exceptional! To find such friendly, accommodating, quality service, food, libation and amenities in such a remote, beautiful setting on the Caribbean is extraordinary!
I fly fished Ascension Bay 3 days with a guide contracted for via Sol Caribe and that experience, as well, did not disappoint!
I'll be back again!!!

Our 2 night stay was wonderful! The staff is very friendly and accommodating to every need. The room clean and very comfortable. We did the inclusive meal plan, every meal was delicious, full of flavor, and plentiful. (The drinks were plentiful too!) We also did the full day excursion which was amazing! We caught many red snapper which the restaurant staff prepared for our dinner, we snorkeled, saw turtles, dolphins, sharks, and many birds including nests with baby birds. Our guides were terrific! If you want to truly get away, disconnect, and have an adventure, Sol Caribe is the place. Thank you to Samuel and his staff for a job well done, taking great care of us, and ensuring our stay was a complete success!
