Great Time at Das Pedras in August

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 weeks ago
My wife and I had a fabulous time with our three teenage kids during an 8-day stay at Rio Das Pedras in early August. The scenery is just simply beautiful. Yes, the weather wasn’t great for two days, yes, the nights can get a little cooler, but we knew that, were prepared, and actually enjoyed getting out of the Texas heat for a bit. The other six days were gorgeous. We went for hikes in the morning, hung out at the beach or the pool, worked out at the well-equipped gym, or played tennis (most courts are well-maintained). My wife and I stayed at the La Reserve area which truly is, by any standard, 5-star. Our kids stayed in the regular part where the rooms, in typical Club Med fashion, are simple but totally sufficient if you get out and are active during the day or, in case of our kids who went all-in on the dancing, at night. The club may not be as easy to navigate for Americans as Miches or Cancun. Many of the guests are South-American or European. And the staff really just speak mostly Portuguese and even many of the GOs aren’t fluent in English. To us, all of that was more refreshing than anything else. We don’t speak Portuguese but it’s amazing how far one can get with Google Translator. We learned a few phrases, had a ton of laughter and fun in our exchanges, and never felt lost in translation. That brings me to my most important point: the incredible friendliness of everyone at the resort. I can’t count the smiles we saw every day. People are just friendly, relaxed, helpful, and happy - that’s in and of itself a vacation. And finally, the baked goods were outstanding. The rest of the food, especially at La Reserve was very good, better than I expected, but the freshly baked bread was special.

Hopefully, this review will save other families from coming here in August. I can’t speak to what this place is like during other months, but I would absolutely stay FAR from here in August. I am here with my 12 year-old son and we are bored to tears. We are actually leaving a day early, despite losing money, because we can’t wait to get out of here. Every kids activity he goes to, he is the only one there. There are no kids his age at the teens club, let alone any at all at the resort that speak English. 90% of the guests are over 75 or families with babies.

The activity schedule is minimal, and more or less the same every single day. Activities are divided up into age groups, so you are only able to attend at certain times. For example, if you want to do the daily hike and family kayak, you cannot do both because they are both at the same time and only at that time. I have never been to an all-inclusive resort that does not allow people to take out kayaks whenever they wish to, not only at appointed times. They have no bikes, stand up paddle boards, ANYTHING.

The food is fine and on par with what I would expect at an all-inclusive resort. The rooms, however, are terrible. Last night I actually checked my son to see if he wet the bed because the overwhelming smell of urine was so pungent. Additionally, the nights are very cold and there is a tiny, semi-functional space heater in the room that barely makes a dent in the cold room temperatures.

There is constant maintenance going on, and that includes frequent spraying of pesticides. It doesn’t matter if you are walking in that direction - you will have to walk through the cloud of chemicals. Somehow, even with the resort fairly empty, we were given a room in the building furthest away from all activities.

One positive note- our G.O.’s Juliana and Manu were lovely and so kind.

Overall, a really big disappointment and NOT what I expect from a Club Med. based on this experience, it is unlikely I will return to any Club Med going forward.

Room tip: Avoid coming in August

Our extended family of 12 spent a week at this Club Med in June. Luckily it was low season and the hotel was not super busy. Our ages ranged from 15 to 88 and the experience was great for ALL ages, with activities and experiences for all !
- Location and view: FANTASTIC. the Brazilian landscape and beaches mixed with rainforest is beautiful and the rooms are built in harmony with the view, without being horrible cement blocks. The beach is gorgeous.
- Staff: the hotel staff was always super helpful and sometimes on 'Brazilian speed' to resolve minor issues, but always with a smile. The GOs (younger staff in charge of recreation) were all incredibly energetic, friendly and kept the activities at a fun level
- Logistic: we had hired transportation from the airport and our flight was delayed several hours, I contacted the emergency email and received confirmation within minutes, the driver was at the airport at the arrival time and the logistics worked perfectly well.
- Food: incredible, there were always so many choices from basic to super gastronomic and all excellent, it was a pleasure going to the restaurant (that had beautiful views) and just choosing from the huge variety. Fruits were also very abundant
- Activities: A huge variety of activities available, my kids tried them all ! Wake, kayak, tennis, beach volley, archery, ping pong, yoga, dance... There were options for all
- Evening shows: they were entertaining at the beginning but every evening seemed to be the same team, more like a gymnastics/dance class choreographed with different costumes. Only area I would improve a little bit
- Swimming pools: huge swimming pool allowed me to swim lengths every day, the kids swimming pool was great and there is also an adult swimming pool a bit further that ha a beautiful view

All in all, it was a fantastic week enjoyed by all and I am pleasantly surprised with the experience since it was my first time at a Club Med.

Wow, where do I even start? I just got back from this absolutely stunning resort, and I couldn't wait to share my thoughts! First off, the place is like something out of a postcard—truly a little slice of paradise. The scenery is breathtaking, with lush greenery and clear waters that make you feel like you've stepped into a dream. Seriously, if you need a visual reset, this is it!

Now let’s talk about the food. Oh my goodness, I can honestly say some of the best meals I've ever had in a resort setting came from this place. The variety was incredible, and every dish was packed with some French and Brazilian flavors. They really don’t hold back when it comes to quality.

And can we discuss the service? The staff here are simply amazing. They go above and beyond to ensure your stay is nothing short of perfect. From the friendly greetings to the attentive service during meals, you really feel valued and taken care of, which makes a huge difference in your overall experience.

The resort has an amazing tourism agency office (near the main reception) where you can set up day trips to nearby tourist locations around the resort; the most popular are Ilha Grande, Paraty, and, of course, Rio de Janeiro.
I need to make a special mention to Andrea, who works in the tourism agency and was so kind to help us set up a special trip to Rio de Janeiro. She definitely read our needs and told us that it would be better to not go with a scheduled trip to Rio, so she suggested that it would be much better to set up a designated driver, especially for our family, that could move us around Rio at our own pace and select places that kids would like.

So the next day, at 8 a.m., we start our trip to Rio with our designated driver, Raphael Ravaiole (the best of the best!). He makes our trip so much nicer, and he perfectly handles the trip which wasn’t that short (almost 3 hours, including the heavy traffic that is traveling through the coast), giving us tips, some history of the places we drove by, and also talking and responding to the funny questions our daughter asked him. I couldn’t be more grateful for this experience because he gave us calm and security that our trip to Rio with the kids would be safe, and so it was. He always gave us tips before leaving the car; it always responded through WhatsApp when we ended our visits; and it always got on time when we left the places. In sum, we drove over Barra Tijuca, Ipanema, and Copacabana, and then we went to Pao de Azucar, the Rio Aquarium, and RioSul Shopping all in one day, so I can’t recommend enough Raphael. He is the best driver if you want to make a trip like ours, especially with kids. I was amazed by his patience and kindness. He is the man!

The facilities are brand new and absolutely stunning! Everything from the pools to the rooms is designed beautifully, which is exactly what you want when you're on vacation. Plus, there's this impressive sports area that blew me away. Whether you’re into tennis, basketball, the gym, or any other activity, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

For families with kids, the Mini Club excels with activities for all ages. In our case, even though our kids wanted to be with us all the time (it happens, I know), that didn’t prevent us from using the kids pool extensively. I strongly recommend that if you have kids under 3, you could use the smallest pool beside the big one with trampolines. It is not deep, and our little kid (2 years) enjoyed it so much that he could play with us more freely and easily because the water gets just to his hips.

What I really loved is how family-friendly the resort is. It caters to all types of guests—from families with kids to couples just looking for a romantic getaway. You can tell that a lot of thought went into making this a cozy place for everyone. They really make it easy for families to unwind and enjoy themselves together.

Now, onto a couple of things that could use some tweaking. We happened to be there in July, and it was a bit cloudier than we expected. Of course, there's not much you can do about the weather, but it would’ve been nice to have the sunshine basking us all day! Also, I noticed that there could be a few more benches in the kids' play area. It would be great for parents to have somewhere to sit and relax while keeping an eye on the little ones.

But honestly, those small drawbacks didn,t really take away from the incredible experience overall. I’d give this resort a solid thumbs up and highly recommend it for anyone who’s seeking a beautiful getaway filled with good food, amazing service, and plenty of fun for the whole family! I can’t wait to go back someday! 🌴✨

Everything is amazing, perfect service and cleanliness.
I had the best time thanks to all of the GO’s and the village boss, Andrea.
I will really suggest you get in touch with GO’s such as: Vitòria Lima, Dj Pet, Steffano, Livia, both of Luisa’s, Leandro, Roxo, Astral and Salú

Renovations going on, which are badly needed but mean it is very noisy, dusty and dirty.

The service is not good.

The activities are ok, but rather disappointing. The kayaking is really good.

Food is too heavy, salty and unhealthy in general for us. The fruit is delicious however.

The rooms are terrible, they need completely renovating . Maybe in a year the hotel will be better.

The beach bar is really horrid, very cheap looking. Again maybe when renovations are complete it will be better.

Right now it’s a complete dump. The kids are happy by the pool but I’m counting the days to leave.

I do not recommend it.

Room tip: Don’t.
