There are many things that are good about Akti Taygetos Resort, but there were also things that were disappointing. To be fair, much of the disappointment came because when we booked, through an on-line travel club, we were not aware that many of the things that attracted us to the Resort would not be available in May for our 13-20 holiday. So, the Piscina Pool Bar and Restaurant, the secret tunnel to the very small beach and the Costa Costa Beach Café were closed until early June (and closed again at some time in September). Off season, as it turned out to be, meant that there was only the main restaurant open and that was closed for lunch. We were dinner B&B. The breakfasts were pretty much as advertised, a mix of Greek, continental and American buffet. They didn’t quite get there with the latter, but you could survive on the offerings. Coffee out of a machine was weak and tea was a bag in a small cup.

The evening meals did not live up to our expectations, although they were reasonably well cooked and perfectly edible. We had in mind that a 4-star hotel would be offering an a la carte choice. However, on nights where there was a coach load of touring guests, a buffet was served. On other nights, it started out as Hobson’s Choice – a rather unpalatable lemony chicken breast on our first night. When that same food was offered on another Hobson’s night, we walked to a relatively nearby taverna for a better offering. Full credit to the staff, they tried to find us an alternative and then asked what we would like for the next Hobson’s evening. We asked for kleftiko and they produced an absolutely wonderful version of it on the Friday evening. In season, I doubt that Hobson’s Choice would ever arise. However, the buffets were not particularly remarkable and were out on display for a couple of hours. The restaurant has an impressive wine list, but the stock was very limited – 3 or 4 bottles of white (2 priced at €30 or more) and no bottles of red out of the 6 listed. Most probably, that problem would not occur in season, but it should not happen in a 4 star at any time.

The Red Roses bar is at the back of the hotel with no outside view. Very few if any people ever seemed to use it and the bar was never staffed, although staff would arrive if you went into the bar. Again, likely to be a low season problem, but even so the bar did not have a great deal of character or atmosphere and could be stuffy in high season, particularly as smoking was permitted.

We had booked a superior room and were allocated one in the main building – there are apartment/bungalows in the grounds. The room was fairly basic but comfortable enough – not sure what was superior about. The bed was a little hard for our liking, but we got used to it after a couple of days. The pillows did not offer a great deal of support, but that is a matter of personal taste. The bathroom was compact, about an outstretched arm’s breadth and depth, with a shower over the bath that was impossible to use without splashing water over the bathroom floor. The air conditioning did not work throughout our stay, despite mentioning it twice to the reception staff. Apparently, the filter needed to be replaced. Fortunately, after a couple of hot nights, the evenings cooled and the lack of aircon was not a problem. The small fridge had space for a couple of bottles of wine that we bought in Kalamata. Mini bar prices were typically higher than seemed reasonable.

The Resort is somewhat isolated, although on the main coast road to Kalamata. Rumour has it there are 3 buses a day, but the timings were a mystery. So, the only way to get into town, other than a hire car, was a taxi - €10 each way to the city centre. The nearest tavernas are a 15-20 minute walk either side of the main entrance. We chose to turn left out of the main gate because the walk was shorter and it took us to a greater choice of bars and eating places. Walk on another 10-15 minutes in the same direction and there is a small supermarket. We found a friendly taverna for lunch and one evening meal and a bar for a sundowner: there is a terrace outside the Resort dining room and drinks could be served there from the Red Roses bar.

Now for the half full version of events. The Resort is immaculately maintained and is pristine throughout. Spotlessly clean, there is no rubbish lying around and the gardens are full of beautiful flowers. There is a good-sized swimming pool surrounded by about 30 sun loungers (might be competitive if the place was full). The fixtures and fittings are all good quality. The view from our room was beautiful and, apart from the odd barking dog, the place was generally quiet. However, the crowning glory of this hotel is the staff. Friendly, helpful and cheerful, they could not be faulted on any level. They understood our disappointments and tried hard to find a solution where that was possible, and they all spoke perfectly adequate English.

Overall, we managed to enjoy our stay, but will not be returning. Despite the efforts and charms of the staff, Akti Taygetos fell short of our expectations for a 4-star hotel. Ignoring the out of season element, the beach is very small, the place is not close to bars or restaurants, and there are question marks over the catering.

They say you can tell a nice day from dawn and it is the small delicate things that make a hotel great especially one that claims to be a “family” run one. Not for Akti Taygetos, which I would suggest, avoid at all costs. Last year, and through the recommendation of a friend who knows the hotel’s management, we placed an advance small deposit for a booking 6 months later. As our plans changed, we immediately informed the hotel that we would like to defer the booking for a time in 2017 – time to be confirmed. Unfortunately, as the wedding we were due to attend was cancelled, we reached out to the hotel to inform them that we would not be attending and requested a refund of our small deposit. It was to our shock that the hotel informed us that returning the deposit “was not in line with their policies” and as such, the deposit would not be refunded. Needless to say, whatever these policies are, they were never communicated to us. As said, it is the small things that make the difference, and if the hotel’s strategy is to withhold deposits to stay afloat, well, you have been warned!

We did not stay in the main building of the hotel, but one of the rooms up behind it. We were escorted their by one of the staff who even carried my bag. The room was cute, it had a little "kitchen" type area which only consisted of a counter, sink, and refrigerator. The environment around the hotel was nice. They have a large pool and also a beach area. We were not able to go to the hotel's beach as it was already closed according in the receptionist since "it is November" - we stayed at the end of October. You could still go swimming at a public part of the beach just 20-30 meters to the right of the hotel beach. The breakfast was large with many options including eggs and meat. The beds were a little hard, but I'm finding most Greek hotel beds are. We also had some little black ants in our room. If you didn't leave the bathroom window open when taking a shower, the entire bathroom got wet and the rest of the room felt damp as well. The location is nice if you plan to eat at the hotel, which we did not as it was a little pricey. It is a little bit of a walk to town to eat there. Sometimes the wifi worked, and sometimes it did not. It probably worked better in the hotel proper.

Nice hotel with rooms in the main building and bungalows. We spent first three days in superior room in main building and were very satisfied. However due to late booking we had to move into the superior bungalow. Very disappointing: small room, A/C unit had very strange smell. So in case you want to spend your holidays here I strongly recommend to book superior room in the main building. Wi-Fi signal was OK in the main building and in the seaside bar, however very week in the bungalows.
Food: we had B&B, breakfast was OK, I missed fresh orange juice.
You can have dinner in the hotel (15 EUR in the self-service buffet). In the evening we usually went towards Archontiko. After 10 minutes’ walk you are in the village with couple of taverns with good food, also music.
Beach is small with gravel first, deeper sand. Not enough sunbeds and umbrellas for all guests.
One of the best things in this resort is Costa Costa Beach Bar. Fantastic location and very friendly staff working there. They will satisfy every customization you will ask for.
Staff: always friendly and eager to help.
As the hotel is outside Kalamata you have to go by taxi (10 EUR) or by your own/rented car. There are no bus connections in the evening.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building are better, recommend superior room.

The hotel is right on the road going south from Kalamata, it has an under the road passage that leads you to a faboulous but rocky beach. I would not recommend it for small children. It also has a pool and two bars, one above the beach with great views and one next to the pool. The breakfast is excellent, everything is prepared on the spot and its fresh with very good variety. The personnel is very polite and do everything to make your stay comfortable. If there is one thing that is missing is that the architecture of the building is not either traditional nor particulary interesting. Also I did not like the fact that the parking lot is right infornt of the hotel, instead of a nice garden, they should have it at the back!!

Room Tip: Rooms above the entrance of the hotel, if you leave your balcony door open at night you will hear all the people coming in and out!!
