The hotel gets its name because it is near the famous Bingley five rise locks on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, a sight well worth seeing. The hotel itself is just up the hill from the locks in a suburban area of Bingley. It is a bulky rather austere Victorian building dominated by a large grim carpark. However, the inside is much more attractive and welcoming and most of the rooms have views over the Aire valley. The hotel has nine bedrooms, all different sizes and shapes and all rather quirky in layout. The rooms are clean and newly decorated (new owners bought the hotel in January 2008) and all have en-siute facilities and TVs. There is a bar with a sunroom sitting area, a restaurant and a breakfast room. The breakfasts are standard "English breakfasts" and are well cooked and fresh. The owners are a husband and wife with two adult daughters, all with strong Yorkshire accents, and they run the place efficiently .
If you are visiting Bingley or Saltaire this is a perfectly acceptable place to stay.

The photo of the Five Rise Locks Hotel gives the impression it is in the countryside. WRONG. It is very much in suburbia and experienced travellers as we are it took us much tooing and froing to actually find the place. (About 40 minutes!) Even locals didn't know it. My heart sank at the dingy entrance, worn carpets, peeling paint. The proprietor was very curt and hardly welcoming. It was a Bank Holiday and we had had a mishap with another booking which was why we ended up at Five Rise Locks. But I knew I'd take my chances on the moors rather than this very dismal place. We were heading for Haworth, the Bronte's village anyway and taking our chances ended up at Ashworth in Haworth as the result of a lucky cancellation. Great welcome, nice rooms and certainly a much better experience all round.

We found Five Rise Locks by chance because we could not get accommodation closer to Harrogate this particular weekend, we were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived.

The hotel is positioned on the hill above the canal and the famous Five Rise Locks, worth a walk down and a stroll along the canal; it has pretty gardens and a terrace area where we were able to have a very acceptable three course dinner with wine for a very reasonable sum.

The rooms were clean and well equipped; our only complaint would be that the beds were lumpy and perhaps past their best. Breakfast was the standard fare, scrambled eggs were rather tasteless and probably microwaved but the full English was excellent.

The owner manager was friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our stay.
