“Could be wonderful... but isn't right now”
Reviewed September 11, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

With a bit of a heavy heart I write this three-star review, because the owners seem to be lovely people, the rental experience was flawless, and the cottage itself is quite nice. The grounds and cottage itself are great, but it has two problems, of which only one is really the owners' fault and could be easily rectified, the other one is a bigger issue but not the owners' fault. Still, reviews are for the benefit of renters, so here it is.

Overall this is a wonderful cottage, very secluded, with a sunny deck that gets sunlight all afternoon. It's equipped with everything you might need even for a longer stay. There's one cottage next door, but sheltered by trees, and another a bit further away. It's not entirely clear if the lots next door are for sale or not, so this may not be accurate forever, but for now it's really quiet (at night). It's a cottage that has been lived in for years as the primary home, so the standard is quite high. The little bay is lovely, and with higher water levels in Lake Huron since 2015, the dock is again usable. The water is clear and of fantastic quality. The kids can go snorkeling and can see lots of crayfish and other lake fauna. The little bay is sheltered, so while it's a bit deep in the middle it's fine for weaker swimmers, too.

Alas, the ground floor (not really rented out) must have been flooded or got very moist at some point, and the beds, carpets and furniture are moldy. The smell of mold permeates the whole cottage - not too much for a problem for us because we had great weather and a constant breeze and could leave the windows open, but on a rainy day this could be very annoying. As is wont to happen, the carpets and upholstery in much of the cottage smell damp, too. The owners are trying to address this by leaving de-humidifiers running, but honestly the problem needs to be addressed by throwing out all the furniture, beds and carpet on the ground floor.

More of a problem - and again, not the owners' fault - is that the neighbouring cottage up the road has installed a large boat ramp, which magically attracts jet skiers. Aside from the noise (that blights most Canadian lakes in summers), the way to the lake for these jet skiers is to cross right in front of the little bay belonging to the cottage. Hence you can forget about swimming anywhere beyond perhaps 20m from the shore unless you want to risk being cut into pieces. The owners of the cottage on the other side (175) are even worse affected, because their jetty ends right on the path of the jet skis. I felt sorry for their kids who couldn't go swimming at all for an entire day. Not sure if anything can be done, but there are cottages you can rent on rocky shores where jet ski traffic is less of a problem.

If you can live with this, don't care about swimming, or if you're renting the cottage in the off-season when you won't get many jet skiers, this is a wonderful place and highly recommended.
