Just returned home yesterday from an amazing week at Memories Paraiso. Prior to our trip, I had read a lot of negative reviews and quite honestly was afraid that I had picked the wrong resort for our week away...... we had an AMAZING week. I feel that people are too quick to post the negatives and not always the positive.
The beach is out of this world!!!!! the nicest beach I have ever been too. The people are so nice. Stop by and see Anita the rice lady. Best rice ever. we had no problems with food. Always lots to pick from. we were in building 34 so close to the pool and beach. We had nothing taken from our room, we used the safe for our valuables and money. will def go back to this resort.

We had booked this vacation through Sell Off Vacations (First Mistake), then made our way to Cuba for our yearly family vacation.

We arrived at the property around 11pm, and there was no staff welcoming us or providing us with direction to get checked in. We had purchased the Diamond Club package for this trip (Don't waste your money you get nothing different then any other guest). The front desk staff were not overly nice and struggled to communicate as they spoke very little English. We couldn't get checked in as Diamond Club (The rep had already gone home, so they just gave us what they had on hand).

The property upon arrival looked nice, little outdated but we expected this. We get to our building and like many tropical destinations the hallways are open to the elements. The building was dark as most of the hall lighting was out and or broken/missing. The room numbers are broken off, hand painted in place of the actual numbers or not there at all. There were stay cats running around everywhere on the property.

The Room(s) - We got to our 1st room, and first impression was "What have we just booked?!" The room was not clean, the phone, toilet, safe, ceiling fans and some outlets didn't work. The beds were like concrete, and stains on sheets and pillow cases. Not able to call the front desk we had to walk back to the lobby (A little ways) to speak to someone. The rooms are very aged, and poorly maintained.

After some confusing and chaotic conversations with the staff, and refusing to wait until morning; we were given another room.. 2nd room was in the same building but now on the 3rd floor vice 1st floor. It was in a better state of cleanliness but still items didn't work, aged and small.

At about 2am (After all the room problems settled), the family we were travelling with came to our room and notified us that their safe was open and money was missing.

*To be fair, the safe didn't work from the start but the couple figured that items in their room, in an semi-closed safe should be relatively secure..*

Back to the Lobby we go! After 45 minutes of Cuban/ English bantering we were still no further ahead. They were not overly concerned and appeared to brush us off. They called their security, but it may have well been the janitor and cleaning lady... The staff would not call the police, but did want to quarantine the room and have the family leave everything and relocate to another room. They explained they wanted to fingerprint all of us including the children and conduct an internal type of CSI investigation (at least that's what I got from the broken translation). We asked for the property manager to be notified but they refused because of the time. No matter how much we tried to explain our displeasure to the staff we only received shrugged shoulders and blank stares...Not a good start to this trip! We had no choice but to wait until morning.

The next morning we did get an opportunity to speak with the property manager "Pedro" who was hands down the nicest most understanding gentleman we had encountered. He launched an investigation into the room theft, he made arrangements for our two families to be relocated from the Memories property to the higher class Grande Memories property next door. He had what appeared to be firm instructions to the staff to be helpful to us and ensure we were looked after. He genuinely cared about our experience and wanted to do everything he could to assist. He made us feel welcome and took the time to listen and help.. (Thank you Pedro)

The second property was allot nicer, cleaner and more functional. Room service was no existent, but at this point we had almost given up on expectations. The food was actually decent and plentiful.

As a family we wanted to try to look past the problems we encountered and make the best of our trip..

So I leave you with this; If you are looking to be catered too, have drinks served to you on the beach or by the pool, this may not be the place for you! The property was rated as a 5 star, but in North American standards this would be a 3 at best. The property manager is what made our trip, and the beach...

We will probably not return to Cuba, but we did want to experience it...and oh did we!

I know the property has come under new ownership (at least I think that's what I was told) and from the effort and level of care that Pedro offered I am sure it may turn around in the future...

OK - so there are so many bad reviews of this resort - people have to realize that this is CUBA! Take a tour through the countryside and then determine if the resort is rundown and filthy - IT ISN'T!! We were Diamond Club Junior Suite Balcony (garden view) so I'm not sure what the other rooms are like. We had an excellent time! The food is great!! If you are beach people, definitely buy the Diamond Club - regardless of what time you get to the beach, Marlin will ALWAYS get a chair for you because it is the Diamond Club section!! Lots of activities for the kids and the staff are SO FRIENDLY!!! We made great friends with the maid when we left her little gifts and she made special towel animals for our 7-year old to discover everyday. Buffet was great - many people complain about Cuban resort food - we were extremely pleased!! Very tasty and a lot of variety. There are always going to be picky people and they will always find something wrong with everything! We did the Diamond Club which gave us a special welcome dinner at The Emporium which was fantastic with a lobster dinner and live music/dancers. Because of Diamond Club we also had the choice of 3 more A La Carte dinners - we booked 2 more (Italian and Mexican) - both were great! Maybe not a great choice for families if you have little ones since the reservations are 7 PM and later. The staff is fantastic! I read another review that stated that they had money stolen?? USE THE SAFE - THAT'S WHY IT IS IN YOUR ROOM (wow stupid people)!! A bit hard to get pool chairs (shade only) however we would rather be doing things instead of lounging all day so we didn't really notice. This property recently split so there are 3 sections (Sanctuary, Grand Memories and Memories Parasio) - I believe the oceanview rooms are only in the 1st two however we were in a building right next to the beach so it was very easy access. We honestly had the best family vacation here - beach is FANTASTIC!!

Hotel: Falling apart. Broken boards, cracks in the walls, broken railings, curtains so old they are also falling apart, broken toilets, moldy chairs in the rooms, you get the idea.

Room: Disgusting, stains on the sheets, stains on the curtains, every single thing dirty or maybe clean but old and stained. The sheets stank, towels stank and had holes in them.

Beach: Beautiful, really nice, clear water, white sand.

Amenities: There are not any.

We only went for 4 days as a quick getaway, but paid the same amount as if we would have gone for a week and we did diamond club with the oceanview. We were SO HAPPY TO LEAVE. Do not go here unless you bring your own food, sheets, towels, everything, and then stay on the beach.

Room tip: No tips, do not choose a room, do not come to this hotel.

Before I went on vacation, I read a lot of reviews and rolled my eyes at some of the comments. I kept saying I never complain and always make the best of my trips and that a lot of the things wouldn't bother me.
Well, some of the complaints didn't bother me but overall, I was very unimpressed.

The facilities NEED to be updated. Yes, the rooms, restaurants, bars, etc were clean but in desperate need of repair and updating. We got to the resort at night so it was dark out. There are literally NO signs for anything and not enough lighting. We walked around the entire resort trying to find our way to the snack bar. Once we got there, we waited over an hour to get a burger (there were maybe 6 or 7 people ahead of us). It shouldn't take this long to get a burger. It was the same in the buffets when you had to get in line for something grilled or omelettes in the morning...the waiting time is absolutely ridiculous.

Rooms: We were in bungalow 32 on the top floor. It was quiet and pretty clean. We had a hard time getting our fridge restocked. We had to keep going to the bar and asking for water to bring back to the room with us. On our second last day we found a cockroach in the room. That wasn't really what we wanted to see when on vacation.

Food: Not amazing but we always found something we liked. We only went to one a la carte and it took about 1.5 hours to get our food and it wasn't that great after all the waiting.

Beach: AMAZING. This beach was the BEST part of our trip. The water was amazing. It was beautiful, the sand was perfect. No seaweed, rocks or coral. Definitely would return to this beach as it doesn't compare to some other places I have been.

Staff: For the most part, the staff was amazing. They were very friendly and obviously hard working.

Pools: Not the cleanest. Didn't really feel like spending a lot of time in there..

Overall: I would not go back because of the general feel of this resort. It felt extremely outdated and in need of some basic maintenance and repairs.

Room tip: Bungalow 32 was great. Close to lobby, beach and pool.
