“Sol Cayo Santa Maria September 21 - 28 2012”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 October 2012

We flew from Toronto to Santa Clara with Canjet . The aircraft was small but not to worry as the flight was only 3 hrs 30 mins. So you can put up with the cramped seats for that long . The flight was uneventful.

We arrived at the Hotel after the bus ride from the airport. Check in was quick and painless no problems at all . The staff were very efficient and friendly. One mention we have is that Jorge at the desk was very helpful in getting us the rooms that we had requested via email. My wife and I were travelling with her father , one of our Daughters , son in law and 6 yr old grandson and another one of our Sons.

This was our second visit to this hotel , the last on being April 2011. After check in we headed to the lobby bar for a drink . We had been telling the family about the Pina Coladas at this bar and how good we had found them last year. It was a bit dissappointing when they told us that they couldn't make them due to the fact that they didn't have any ice . So we settled for other types of drinks.

We had actually raved about this hotel and that's why family members had joined us this year. All in all it was not the same as last year . This was actually our Daughters and Son in laws first anniversary and we attempted to set something up for them with Guest Services . It was actually very dissappointing when the lady at Guest Services told us that there wasn't anything she could do but supply us with a bottle of wine and a letter from the hotel wishing the couple a happy anniversary. So we made plans ourselves and got flowers from a village and spoke with the staff in the buffet who came up with a bottle of champagne and a cake for them at dinnertime .

The beach was absolutely stunning one of the best beaches we have seen in Cuba . The beach bar is great and the service there is second to none . Yetzey was extremely helpful and friendly and would go out of her way to make sure we were having a great vacation. She is really a credit to his hotel.

The food was very good and you had no problem finding something that you liked at this hotel. We met lots of people from all around the world . From Agentina to the U.K.
Hi to Lee and his partner from the U.K. . Lee had town he was born in tatood on his arm "Salford" We didn't have time to get contact details but if you read this give us a shout .

All in all it was a good holiday .

Also the fishing was great ...... if you like fishing . The barracudas were quite a battle to get in and also quite an experience to catch.

If anyone has any questions , don't hesitate to give us a shout .

All the best Tony and Janis .

Room Tip: Room #4503 had a partial ocean view and good location

This was my 33rd visit to Cuba, and I wasn't disappointed at the "value for price" that one gets on vacations to this country! This hotel is perhaps the oldest on the island of Santa Maria, but under the supervision of manager Navarro, renovations are ongoing.
Keep in mind that weather at this time of year is very changeable. In the two weeks I was there, it rained almost every day, but mostly at night. It is very humid and quite hot. Insects are problem and the hotel sprays every day at 7pm. Bring cortazone cream, antihistamine tablets, and insect repellant. The beach is gorgeous and the water is warm, and calm most of the time. The water sports are non-motorized, adding to this quiet, spacious, and quiet beach resort. If you want lots of action, crowds, and razzamatazz, this is not the place for you. The other newer hotels were more crowded, but the Sol Cayo had the widest, and nicest stretch of beach. The price at $960 for two weeks was hard to beat! I liked the rooms in the renovated 5000 section. They are spacious and close to everything, yet very quiet. Very few rooms on the second floor had an oceanview. Personally, they are all quite far from the beach anyway, and not worth the extra cost.
The food was quite good with lots of choice. The dining-room is huge, clean and very comfortable. I found the service good, and the staff pleasant.
The resort is an hour and a half busride from the hotel, but the countryside along the way, is very beautiful. Have your camera ready for some spectacular photos of authentic Cuba.
If you are going with Air Canada Vacations, be warned that meals onboard are NOT included in the price.
Another thing to be aware of, is when you're leaving Cuba... bottles of liquids for example of rum, have to be packed inside your luggage and checked through. They can't be taken through customs in hand luggage. You can however, buy alcohol at the duty-free shops on the other side of customs and carry it onto the plane directly. I will share a secret with you. One of the best products from Cuba that you can buy, is HONEY! It is a steal at $1.30, tastes of orange blossoms, and is available at one of the shops at the airport in Santa Clara.
The hotel room has an iron and ironing board in each room. The current is 220V and there are hairdryers in the bathroom. The hotel shop has a good array of shampoo, creams, razors, cigars and rum. Large bottles of water are provided in the rooms, but nothing else. The varied TV programs in English, Spanish, Russian, French and Chinese, fill in t he timeon rainy days. Bring books to read and to leave behind. The reading material is handed out at the beach towel counter on an honour system. Needless to say, there are VERY few books to choose from. The entertainment is fair and the drinks are okay. I suggest bringing a carafe with you for coffee from the lobby bar, before going into the dining-room, as well as for drinks from the beach bar.
The exchange rate at the hotel bank is very good at the moment: $100 Canadian gave 98CU. Try to avoid changing money on the weekends, when the rate falls.
If you'd like to bring gifts from Canada, consider stockings, the fishnet type for the dancers (8 females). The ones they have, are full of holes. If you have access to decorative materials for their costumes, it would be greatly appreciated. Clothing, especially for children, is very expensive for Cubans. Any luxury item like makeup, is always a hit. The Dollar Store has inexpensive recorders (flutes). Empty CD's, razors, Ziplock bags, nail clippers, scissors, perfume/cologne, used bathing suits, etc. are always needed. Cubans can get some items, but they are expensive on their small salaries. I had a request to bring the Becherelle French Verb Conjugation text, for a lady in the hotel store.
If you come with a print-out of the resort from www.resortmaps.com, you can specify your room-location preference upon arrival or write to the hotel directly at reserva1.ssm@meliacuba.com (attention: Jorge). There are sections reserved for different tour operators, so you can request a room with them as well. Second floor is best if you don't want little critters. Please remember you are on a nature reserve surrounded by sea grapes and mangroves, with butterflies and hummingbirds and multi-colored lizards.
I recommend this hotel for it's wonderful staff, from the manager down. It's location among flowers and trees, the superb beach, and the comfortable rooms with huge windows make you feel like you're in a treehouse. Very restful. Three large pools of different depths were great on days when the waves were too rough for my liking. There were lots of places to eat from the beach area, to a pizzeria, to a la carte and the main buffet-style dining room.
The property is quite vast within a lot of varied greenery. This place is a haven of nature!

Room Tip: Oceanview rooms are not worth the extra. 5000 section away from pool was very quiet yet central. Ask...

We stayed at this hotel for a week . It's not our first all inclusive travel and we don't think about going back there. We well know that Cuba is Cuba but there certainly is a limit.

We were surprised on how really good the food was at the buffet and at the pizza-spagetti restaurant near the beach. Nice variety and taste. The service wasn't as good. Really need to improve on how they run the buffet, half of the staff look somewhere else when people need something. And it's not only for us, for people around us also.

Room service was done everyday but each time they would forget something like toilet paper or towels... Cleaning was done fast. Not real clean and we had cockroaches. Disgusting.
We had a 'beachfront suite'. My advice: take a regular room. It's a lot less expensive and you don't see the beach anyway. Beds were like a plate of wood.

The beach is real nice, mostly clean. The view is great and you can walk for a long time on both sides. We did not go to the pool as it was not really clean. The pool bar was great as they can serve you sandwichs at night, like when we arrived at 1:00h a.m, we were ungry. Good thing.
In many resorts, these are closed past 11:00 p.m.

Been there.Seen it. No plan of going back.

Room Tip: Beach front rooms from the pizza restaurant up to the end all have cockroaches. We spoke with other...

September 15th – 22nd 2012

The Santa Clara airport is small; you have to clear customs individually. Leaving the airport building, on the right hand side there is a currency exchange booth, there is also one at the hotel close to the Lobby (don’t forget to set aside 25 CUC’s per person for the mandatory departure tax). You can purchase beer from vendors outside and on the bus, do keep in mind the bus ride is 1 hr. & 45 min.

This was my 5th visit to the Sol Cayo Santa Maria and my Daughters 3rd, allot has changed in two years. The Sol is the oldest hotel in the area and is very much showing its age, wear and tear. There are some efforts being made to spruce up the hotel, but it is going to take allot more than a coat of paint to do this. The Sol is now independent of the Sister hotel the Melia, located next door. My Daughter and I missed the variety and quality of food, coffee and liquor that were available on past visits. Fortunately many wonderful Staff work at this hotel, especially in the Buffet and Lobby bar and they really did a great job looking after us. We really missed the older, classy piano player in the Piano bar; the atmosphere is not the same without her, nor is the quality of service.

There was an area of the Buffet sectioned off to accommodate the American tour groups when they are at the hotel, I have met many independent American travellers during my 15 visits to Cuba, it was a different experience with the tour groups; had a real Mexican and Dominican flavor to it.

The 5 star beach is the main draw card and attraction to this area of Cuba, the white sand and Turquoise Ocean is just stunning. At this time, the Sol is the only hotel on Cayo Santa Maria that has an Au-Natural/Clothing optional section on the beach, attracting Guests from different Countries. I very much enjoyed my time on the beach and in the Ocean; even during the odd thunder storm, the beach was just magical.
In order to cut costs the hotel closed the very popular Los Flamencos (pizza & spaghetti restaurant and bar), I would understand if renovations were being done, but this was not the case and makes absolutely no sense at all considering the pizza/spaghetti restaurant is so popular and is the only food and drink service close to the C/O section of the beach. Many Guests were very upset having to walk back and forth from the Au-Natural section to the La Picua (beach bar and grill) just to get something to drink. There was a beach drink service provided only one day during our stay, but even the Staff working this service got tired of walking back and forth in the hot Sun. My Daughter and I did not care as we had our stainless steel and bubba mugs with us, but if we were not prepared, we too would have been upset like many other Guests. My previous stays at this hotel were all during low season, so I don’t buy the “low season” excuse. Since the Sol chain is obviously cutting back on this hotel, it would make sense to shut down the main Buffet at Lunch time, just like they do at many other hotels during slow times. The other thing that did not make sense was shutting off the water supply to the shower that is on the bridge way, close to the Au-Natural beach and not providing a means to wash the sand off, this is not nice for Guests who do not want to drag sand into the room and it is not fair to the maid at all.

I would consider returning again if there was a good deal and a direct flight. Any questions please feel free to email me.

Myself and wife went to Cuba our first trip on June 15 2012 7days all inclusive
we stayed at Sol Cayo resort it was great the food the room and staff
the beach it was clean only one Problem at the beach we would like to see more communication
to all Guests refering to let us know the areas at the beach for nudists and have designated areas for nudism and the staff on patrol should enforced
when they give us a map upon arrival regarding the resort and beach maybe they could let us know these areas for nudists

We travelled here beginning of August for 2 weeks, myself, husband and son (14). This was our 1st time to Cuba, and was very worried about this hotel (to the point of looking to change). We checked in on the coach to the hotel, which was brilliant, so no queuing, when we arrived, We was greeted by dancers and cocktails, and got took to our room on a golf buggy. Yes our room was tired with a few faults, but the view was amazing. The room was good enough to sleep and shower, what else do you need it for !! You do get a few bugs, but where don't you, (we even had a scorpion in our room one day, it was amazing), we just chucked it over the balcony.
Our 2nd night we was invited to a Cuban welcome dinner along with the other new guests, we had a lovely night. We also got invited to a farewell evening at the Italian restaurant before our return home. Great food.
The restaurants are plenty, with great food in all. I don't see how anyone can complain with so many restaurants and variety of food, all the food we had, was hot and well cooked. The service we received in nearly all the restaurants was brilliant. I say nearly all, as we had a really moody waitress one night at the Cuban restaurant, which we complained about to the manager.
The bars all serve cocktails and champagne, and had brilliant service, never queued once.
The beach is the best I have ever seen, it is just beautiful, and great staff at the beach bar and restaurant.
All the bars and restaurants was open when we was there.
The pools where cleaned regularly, yes there are a few crabs in them sometimes, but hey, your right next to the beach and surround by mangrove jungle !!!
There was a lot of repair work being carried out, but no noise or inconvenience to anyone. The new manager is brilliant and really trying to turn this hotel around, from what we saw it will soon be back up to its 4 star rating. (we even saw the manager grouting the baby pool, showing the staff how to to it properly !! ).
The gardeners are lovely people and love it if you stop for a chat, they will even get you a fresh coconut for you.
Tipping is a big must, from the waiters to gardeners, only a small amount, but means so much to them.
The trips are expensive, but your a captive audience as there is no where else on the island to book. We went on the catamaran day trip, which was really relaxing, had good snorkelling. We also went half day sea fishing, which was a bit of a let down.
We went to Havana for 2 days, which we booked independently before we arrived in Cuba, as we wanted 2 full days there with flights each way. (which isn't offered on hotel trip).
Overall I would deffinatly go back to this hotel, it was the most relaxing holiday we have ever had.

Room Tip: Room 1503, amazing view overlooking sea
