We are from New Zealand and we stayed in the hotel during the disastrous fire broke out. We were so lucky that none of us got hurt. The hotel itself survived from the fire. The staff were supportive and kind. We shared dinners by the fireplace. We played games and chatted in the candle light. We really enjoyed our stay there. Definitely we will go back again.

We booked the hostel only one day in advance but were picked up at the airport without any problems. The staff of the hostel is extremely friendly and even shared their dinner with us and assisted us for hours to organize the further trip.
The rooms are clean, decorated very neatly and have a heating mat available for colder nights as the floor heating is not fully enough to heat up the room in winter. The bathroom was clean and fully equipped. The location is quite in the center of Shangri-La next to Baiji Si temple and the romantic streets of the old town.
We had a very nice stay, thank you again!

We spent three nights at the Bird of Paradise and the location couldn't have been better. Right in the heart of the old city, we were able to explore the cobble-stoned lanes at our leisure. Terrific Tibetan restaurants were just around the corner as was the excellent Shangri-la Handicraft Development Center. From the upper deck of the hotel, there was a stunning view of Guishan Temple.

The hotel was very clean and the rooms were snazzily decorated with lots of bright colors, animal prints and sequins. Our room was quite large, although we booked the deluxe family suite. Our bed was incredibly hard, even by Asian standards. The bathroom was cramped, especially since the door opened into the sink.

A big negative for us was the lack of a heat source in our room. We visited in mid-April and the weather was damp and chilly. It would have been great to return to a heated room every evening. There were lots of blankets on the bed, and an electric heating pad, but still it was very cold. Hot water in the shower also wasn't dependable, and the lack of a shower curtain meant that water went everywhere.

The front desk staff is friendly and helpful, if a little slow moving. We had to ask three times before they called for a taxi to take us to the airport. They also weren't always sure of directions which was surprising given Shangri-la's small size.

Buildings next door and across the street were being renovated during our stay, but to their credit, the hammering didn't begin until 8am and things had wrapped up by 6pm.

Overall, it was a decent place, and probably pretty good by Shangri-la standards. But we have stayed in much nicer places in China for around the same cost. If we had it to do again, we would have paid more for a fully heated hotel.

Room tip: We booked the "deluxe family suite" which was much larger than the standard rooms.

We were greeted at the airport and at the reception desk by a friendly welcome. The guy, who seems to man the front desk at all days of the day and night, speaks rudimentary English, but is extremely helpful and wrote us notes to find and navigate our way around the town and to arrange onwards travel.

The old town itself is far less impressive than Lijiang, but I am conscious that my impression may have been clouded by a bout of food poisoning. There were a couple of English friendly cafes; otherwise, it definitely felt like we had found somewhere off the beaten tracking, with a foot in Tibet.
