Just one night in this nice B&B is too short. The host Ian, was very friendly and helpful, the room was clean and comfortabel, the beach was on walking distance. But the best part of our stay was the next morning: at breakfast we had the best French toast (with cinnamon and Sugar) ever!

We were travelling in two couples with a toddler. Very comfortable stay. Squeaky clean. Serviced. Breakfast included (decent spread). The hosts were very very helpful and welcoming. They were very earnest in their recommendations. Beach was a short walk from our accommodation. And what a beach, brilliant waves and it also had a tidal pool. Great experience

A lovely cosy guest house in Salt Rock with a beach only a short walk away and a couple of good local restaurants. We spent 6 days here and despite not having a car we were able to use recommend tour guides to explore Kwa Zulu Natal - highlights were the Drakensburg Mountains, Hluhluwe Safari Park and St Lucia Wetlands. It was so nice coming back to Saffron House and the breakfasts like everyone has already said are delicious!

Hi Rina, thank you for your review.

We are so pleased that you had such a great time in KwaZulu-Natal. You certainly used your time to the full and visited some of our best attractions using The Saffron House as your home base.
We hope you may return one day so we can suggest some more places you can visit and enjoy.

Very best regards
Ian

I arrived late and had to go to the airport very early. Ian was very helpful and even made me a breakfast on the go when he noticed I had an early flight to catch.
Room is clean, huge bathroom and I like the wooden balcony in front of the room. The only thing I missed was a desk in the room to work a little bit on the computer. For my short stay it was fine, but for a longer stay I would really miss that. However I am sure if you ask they will arrange it for you :)

Hi Rob, thanks for completing a view for your very brief stay. We are very pleased you enjoyed the hospitality at The Saffron House and we hope you will choose to stay with us again if you are in the area.
And yes, we do have a spare desk if you need it or we will put you in a room with a desk already.

Very best regards
Ian.

Our room was very comfortable and this and the bathroom were reasonably well appointed. The shower, with no curtain or screen left the bathroom floor very wet and slippery every time it was used - a screen or enclosure is really needed. The approach to the room from the car park required a lot of steps - difficult for the elderly or infirm (or someone like me with a recent hip replacement). The room lacked a safe - a necessity in South Africa. All the other B&Bs we've visited in South Africa had reasonably priced honesty bars, but not this one. Saffron House has a licence and charges exorbitant prices for most drinks, especially wine by the bottle.
Ian is helpful and friendly, but the cleaning staff seemed to object when we wanted to use our room for changing whilst they were cleaning. The breakfasts are adequate, but we do expect to have toast and tea made for us, and the sausages were poor quality German style frankfurters, not 'pork chipolatas' as stated on the menu.
The location is quiet, but a long way from the sea and any restaurants, requiring a drive whenever going out. The drive is very steep - our hire car could only make it with a 'run' and the clutch was very smelly after each entry!

Thank you for your review of your five night stay at our guest house. I must admit I was quiet surprised at the amount of negativity mentioned here as it did not appear that you were unhappy during your stay,
Unfortunately I really am unable to do anything about the five steps at the side of the house and the four steps to the deck where you room is situated as the property is built on a slope.
The shower in the Sunflower room is specifically designed as a wet room and extra towels are supplied to put on the floor if so desired.
As the rooms have free standing wardrobes it is not really feasible to put safes in the rooms as there is no way to secure them. We did offer to look after any valuables for you if you did not want to leave them in the room.
I am extremely surprised about your statement about liquor sales. As pointed out, there is a mini bar in your room with the prices given in the guest book. The wine is not exorbitantly priced, for example a bottle of Leopards Leap Shiraz is R62 which works out to GBP3.44. This is cheaper than all restaurants charge. If you wanted serving at the bar we are quite happy to do so.
You as a guesthouse/B&B are not allowed to sell liquor to guests without having the appropriate licence.
As far as breakfast is concerned we offer a self service buffet consisting of usually 4/5 choices of bread and at least 6 choices of teas, then an additional cooked meal chosen from our menu, if you wanted me to make toast and tea for you as you stated then why didn't you ask me? I am quite happy to do it for you.
The sausages yes are more suitable for our Germanic guests but we are quite prepared to offer different sausages if you wanted them.
The closest beach entrance is 500 metres from the guest house.
To walk in the dark in most parts of South Africa is generally not advised however if you do want to walk to restaurants there are 3 in Salt Rock village which will take 15 minutes to walk.
We also offer a reasonably priced taxi service.
And finally a smelly clutch is generally caused by poor driving technique not a steep incline!
