Incredible, incredible, incredible! You really can't say enough about an amazing honeymoon trip to the Emerald Hill Villa in Marigot Bay. For starters, the view of the bay and sea is even better than the pictures you've seen on the internet. Waking up to the sun shining in the bay every morning was a blessing. You can meet neighbors while walking home but you won't hear or see them from the house (even your next door neighbors on each side). The pool is just right for two people and the seating around is great. The house is optimized for comfort, offering plenty of seating for meals or lounging. In all likelihood you'll have some bird friends staying with you, but they are very pleasant and don't make but so much noise. The refrigerator is fine and the kitchen is functional but do yourself a favor and go out down the hill to the marina, get a drink enjoy the cuisine. My last comment before getting to a whole laundry list of tips and tricks is simple: get to know the people who live in Marigot Bay - they know all the great things to do in St. Lucia and they are all incredibly nice. My wife and I had such a great time chatting with Melinda (her husband, Bob, runs the Marina, you'll see him running around daily), catching a ride up the hill with Pierre, speaking with Judith when we were at the Rainforest Hideaway, and of course then there is Alice, who while she doesn't live in Marigot Bay will be sure to stop by and visit. I'm sure there are so many others you'll meet, especially the many men and women who work and serve and bring the Bay to life, I hope you enjoy their conversations, stories, and pleasantries as much as we did! You won't regret this trip!

Here are some items that I wanted to know as I planned my trip but didn't see in the reviews:

-the beds are both large and very comfortable
-the mosquito netting around the four-poster is not intrusive, you'll be fine (we didn't see too many bugs, but there were a few)
-the house is very open (even the bedrooms have some screened venting) and it is windy on top of the hill, but this too is a plus as the breeze keeps you nice and cool at night without keeping you awake
-there are north american outlets in the kitchen (we didn't use our converter at all)
-you'll be provided with a cellphone and some credit for calling various people/places
-there is wifi (if you really.... really need it)
-you'll be plenty safe
-we walked down the hill (not a perfectly paved road, but neighbors can drive cars on it) to the marina most mornings and back UP the hill a few times each day, but we are a young couple. While I did see older folks walking up and down the hill it is not for the weary (this is not a bad thing, but very good to know); rent a car if you think you'll get sick of it, but the exercise was nice
-there is a grocery store but it is not extensive, you'll be able to get milk, coffee, fruit and the like, but it is not huge like you're probably imagining; it is good for a quick item or two (drinks snacks, etc). If you need a grocery cart full of things to cook a meal for several you'll want to drive 10 minutes to the IGA (the prices are better there too)
-there is a bank in the same centralized marina location
-there is a great breakfast spot right in the marina, fresh baguettes, wonderful omelettes, and other assorted breakfast foods will keep you full for a fairly low price ($10-12 US)
-the other restaurants are equally pleasant and all right in walking distance along the docks, very quaint
-quiet at night, the restaurants are where you'll find people that aren't enjoying their boats
-speaking of the boats, they only add to the view! The most wonderful yachts (sailing and motor) stay in the bay
-it is rare to see cruise ships from either the bay or your house, maybe one or two per day, it is more pleasant than a pest (they sail from Castries and don't obstruct the view)
-the beach is small, good for a day, but really gives you an excuse to go visit the other parts of the island (even if you are honeymooning). Marigot Bay is an ideal location for going north to the Rodney Bay area and south to the Soufrière area.
-taxi service in St. Lucia is fairly regulated (though not metered) and can be expensive (this is coming from a New Yorker); rent a car or expect to pay (this is actually another plus for Marigot since it is in the middle of the island on the Caribbean side and thus closer to the areas you will want to visit).
-just because the island is only 27miles long doesn't mean it won't take you 40 minutes to travel to the places that seem close as the crow flies. The island is very mountainous in the center and it just takes time to get to places.
-go snorkeling in Anse Le Cochon (one of the nicer beaches that is close by), the water is clear and you won't be in any danger (unlike in Reduit where my foot happened upon a spiny urchin-like creature)
-read "the Man Who Loved Schooners"; a copy is provided at the house. It is a bit campy at times, but the author is the son of the man who first took a chance on turning Marigot Bay into a tourist location back in the 60s. He also owned the property you'll be staying on. You'll learn so much history and gather a better appreciation for the locale.

We've been visiting Emerald Hill for years and consider it a "Home away from Home". Walking in the door we shed our cares and instantly become honeymooners again (we've been married 33 years). Watching the boats coming into the bay, feeding the birds, reading books in the hammock, dips in the private plunge pool easily become part of our daily routine.
Now that the internet is reliable we can visit more often and still keep up on our business. We consider a car necessary, but still take daily walks down to the village for fun and exercise. Exploring the island and fishing trips with Captain Tom on the Exodus are "must do" for us, but we're always happy find our way back to Emerald Hill Villa.

“Breathtaking views and quintessentially relaxing holiday villa.”
Reviewed January 2, 2012 for a stay in December 2011

The Emerald Hill Villa and its owner, Alice Bagshaw, are two amazing gems of St. Lucia. This was my second stay at the "Cliff House" (the first being in 2008) and it was once again superbly relaxing: kicking back with several books, overlooking the plunge pool and Caribbean Sea, watching Magnificent Frigatebirds soar in the sky and other small wildlife skitter about. Amenities down the hill in Marigot Bay include several restaurants and bars, where local food fare and rum drinks abound (including dinner at the wonderful Rainforest Hideaway). The villa bedrooms are lovely, with white linens and Bagshaw silk screen artwork, and the spacious open-air family room/dining room/kitchen area allows tropical breezes to keep everything cool pretty much all the time. Nearby island activities are available, too -- tours of the local rum distillery; birding trips into rainforest; food, music, and dancing at the Gros Islet "Jump Up". And you simply cannot beat the amazing Caribbean sunsets from this villa perched on the edge of a cliff. Although I'd recommend renting a car (and having your friend drive it all the time, if you can get him to do that), taxis are prevalent and will take you pretty much anywhere you want to go. An absolutely wonderful place to escape the rat race, enjoy some solitude, and experience a slower, more peaceful existence. Thank you so much for everything, Alice, and hope to see you again soon!

Liked best: The villa's absolutely fabulous open-air view of Caribbean Sea and the island's relaxing, 80-degree temperatures.
Liked least: Eventually had to go home to the snow.

“Far and away my favorite vacation property!”

This was my fifth trip to St Lucia staying at Emerald Hill Villa. What a great house! This has to be the best view on the island and this is absolutely the most relaxing vacation I take. The owner and our housekeeper, as well as guest services, helped us with any questions or needs we had. With the incredible views of Marigot Bay on one side, the blue Caribbean on the other, and all of the comforts of home available (there's no TV, but that's part of the draw for me), it's sometime a challenge to get out an explore the island. BTW, the pictures on the site are accurate but can't quite do it justice.

“Great villa / Amazing Views / Privacy”
Reviewed November 11, 2011 for a stay in November 2011

This was out second stay at Marigot Bay this year. First we stayed at Inn on the Bay right next door. We really enjoyed that vacation so much that we wanted to come back but wanted our own place to call home. We found it here. The villa is located on the very end of the peninsula and the views along with privacy are amazing. If you like lots of people around go to a hotel, you will not really see anyone here for a week, just the way I like it. Regardless of rain or sun, the villa will leave you captivated with the views. While a bit of TLC would would make it even better we would both come back. Great Great Great

The Emerald Villa, St Lucia, West Indies. Owned by Alice Bagshaw and located high above Marigot Bay with sweeping views of the Caribbean. This is our second time staying at the same property and was a very fitting place to celebrate our 30th anniversary (with the help of a nice bottle of wine left for us by the owner Alice). Without a doubt, this has to be one of the most scenic locations anywhere in the Caribbean. The house is very private, with dense vegetation and a high fence on one side and a startling cliff on the other side. Full amenities allow you to stay there without ever having to leave the house or a short 10 min walk takes you down to the tiny vlllage of Marigot. There you will find numerous restaurants, fully stocked grocery store, water taxis, and very friendly locals. My wife and I are both PADI scuba divers and have found the local dive company (Dive Fair Helen) to be well run, with certified divemasters and instructors. The dive sites are only a short boat ride away and are absolutely superb, with shipwrecks and reefs that can only be described as astounding. Besides diving, there are many activities on the island for the adventurous and non-adventurous such as sailing, whale watching, deep sea fishing, zip-lining and jungle hikes. At the end of the day, no matter what adventure we had been on, sitting poolside on the patio with a cold beer, a good book and the setting sun was the ultimate in laid back leisure.
One of the things that attracted us to the island of St Lucia was the fact that it is slightly off the beaten track. Much of the island is undeveloped jungle with only a few all inclusive hotels and many boutique style lodgings. We find this attracts a far different crowd then you would find in other resort areas such as Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. The tourists here are very diverse with many coming from various European countries as well as from Canada and the US. The locals tell us that many Hollywood types stay on the island because of the privacy and anonymity.
What else can I say? This place is paradise.
Many thanks to Alice for helping to make our stay so memorable. We have many pictures which we look at all the time, while thinking of when we can visit again.

“Our new FAVORITE place...We couldn't have found anything more breathtaking!”
Reviewed June 7, 2011 for a stay in May 2011

With an absolutely PHENOMINAL view upon entering the home...we knew this was where we wanted to be for our 2nd honeymoon. Emerald Hill has an entire view of the Carribean Sea and an entire view of Marigot Bay from its perch on the cliff top. It's private pool seems to be one with the sea. And the open air atmosphere truly invites all our senses (The wall is open to the West). Not to worry...the bedrooms are enclosed with a/c if one requires that. Our most gracious hostess, Alice, and all her friends made our stay even more delightful. And our private Chef Joel dazzled us with an absolutely wonderful St. Lucian dinner for our Anniversary night! Special just for us, I know.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind: Bring good walking shoes as St. Lucia is a Mountainous Island. I would suggest renting a car. The Bay has plenty of restaurants but you have quite a climb down and back up the mountain if walking. Be prepared to embrace nature and its inhabitants as the living area in Emerald Hill is open to 2 acres of rainforest. I personally enjoy it that way. Nature can truly awaken the soul! I watched the lovely hummingbirds each day buzz about from the flower to flower on the Flamboyant tree. And last, but not least enjoy the new friends you'll meet there! They are all wonderful people at the Villa! Cindy and Geoff
