“A very charming hotel in a great location”
Reviewed 28 January 2012

This hotel is in the heart of the old town and has a lot of charm. Its beautifully styled and the rooms around the internal courtyard are really lovely. It is an old hotel and you can hear a lot of creaks and groans (and perhaps a few little critters) during the night. But, the staff are super friendly and helpful and the pizzeria next door is equally charming with delicious food.

this is my first TA 100% happy review. we had a magnificent master room facing the mostly quiet street, smack in the middle of the pleasant historic center. the on premises pizzeria offered the best value dinner and excellent quality pizza and caipirinhas. Free breakfast was okay.

Service was skilled, very attentive and simply excellent. The pousada is a tastefully restored colonial residence, that blends rustic elegance with modern comforts and leave nothing to be desired.

Room Tip: 116 was super for us, but wifi signal is best in the up or downstairs lounge are

We stayed here for 2 nights, before and after our trip to Lencois Maranhenses. The location is very central, perfect for exploring the old city of Sao Luis, and our rooms which face the inner courtyard, were large, airy and quite quiet in the evenings.
Breakfast was an excellent spread bountiful with different fruits, juices, cakes and pastries and the pizzeria adjoining the hotel served very decent pizza, making it a convenient stop for dinner.
Service standards were mixed. While the cleaners and porters were very helpful and quick to assist, the receptionist was a little laissez faire and not very helpful with information about the city or dining tips, though he did get our transfers without a hitch. In the end, we walked into the neighboring Alliance Francaise for restaurant recommendations!
As for Sao Luis itself, we can see the vestiges of its former beauty on the facades of the newly restored houses, but it is still by and large a crumbling old town that does not seem particularly welcoming or safe. The infrastructure is not great as well in the old town, and both days we were there, the town faced temporary blackouts due to heavy rainfall disrupting the power lines.

This Pousada has a great potential, but some details needs to be improved...
The building is beautiful, there are some nice sitting areas, the dining room is charming and breakast is tasety...the room we have got (facing the street) was spacious and nice; it is pity that there are some maintenance issues that spoil the experience (like moving tables in the dining room and exposed nail in the room).

Pousada Portas da Amazonia is may be not a place where I would stay for 1 week because not so many things to do around the pousada, but for a 1, 2 or 3 nights in Sao Luis when you want to be in the old area, this place is like a jewel for those who like good atmosphere and nice place for a reasonnable price. There is few things to change but really there is something like a very magic atmosphere in this place, may be because it has been very well renovated in a nice colonial style. To visit the old city of Sao Luis, may be the best location and very safe place

This was a charming experience in a charming old city. Situated in the "old city", it retained much a the charm of colonial Brazil with exposed beams and a delightful inner courtyard. I'd grade breakfast about a B+. I recommend opting for the highest quality room. It's huge, mine overlooking the street with several full length windows that let you take in the full flavor of Sao Luis, including music and singing off an on all day long. Close to shopping and restaurants and all the sites.

Room Tip: Go for the highest quality, streetside room--only noisy with windows open but provides the fullest e...

This hotel's main attraction is its location in the historic center. It consists of several inter-connected houses on a hilly, cobble stoned street, with broken sidewalks. This location is, however, a mixed blessing. When we arrived on a week-night the street was incredibly noisy with music blaring from the open windows of adjacent houses. Access to the hotel is difficult as vehicles cannot approach it and luggage has to be dragged from the nearest drop off point or bus stop. The neighborhood, though (very) partially restored, is lugubrious at night. We were shown two interior rooms with no windows and musty air, opening onto an inner court, containing the hotel's restaurant, where boisterous foreign guests added further to the ambient noise. Almost all the guests were foreigners with few if any Brazilians. The atmosphere is of a rather superior back- packers' hostel. For younger budget travelers who don't mind noise this may fulfill their needs. But for those who require a minimum of tranquility and comfort, this hotel will be disappointing.

Room Tip: It should have a window and should not face the street
