“charming house in Birgu”
Reviewed December 3, 2014 for a stay in November 2014

Alfie is an excellent guest, making sure all commuications clear before meeting and offering us a welcome drink. Fridge was stocked with essentials and Alfie made sure everything was ok for us during our stay. .
The house is located in a charming part of Birgu and is a lovely retreat for a holiday. Great value for money and a taste of Maltese life.

We met our host at a bar and he showed us aroung Vittoriosa. Where to shop, where to eat and where the ferry was leaving for Valletta. He even showed us where to get a parking permit for our rental car. (If you want to park your car in Vittoriosa over night you need that permit - or you can leave the car outside the city-walls...
The property itself is small but cosy. Alfie provided a starter-kit of basic food and water in the fridge so we didn't need to buy provisions right away.
The bathroom is fitted up to modern standards and the shower is spacious.
The main bedroom has a TV and air condition.
If you are looking for a house of character with the comforts of modern life (such as TV, WIFI), this is the place for you!

“It does what it says on this tin ...”
Reviewed November 17, 2014 for a stay in November 2014

Alfie's place is a beautiful apartment set in the Knights Quarter of the historical city of Birgu. Alfie collected us from the airport as arranged and right from the moment we met him he endeared himself to us. He took us on a whirlwind tour of Birgu and parked in Victory Square where our holiday began with a visit to DCentre, a lovely café/bar where we enjoyed the hospitality of our host. We then collected our luggage and were taken just three streets away to our accommodation for a week.

Just walking to the apartment was wonderful ... beautiful unspoilt streets of terraces built in Medieval times ... our accommodation was accessed via some steps and on opening the door we entered into the most delightful property. Situated on the ground floor is a kitchen/eating area and a bathroom and on the first floor two bedrooms, the main one with seating and a balcony. The property is spotless and Alfie kindly left essentials, water, coffee, etc., to last us for a couple of days.

Birgu has so much to offer with enormous amounts of history on every street. Wander at leisure and take in the sights and sounds of this historic area and meet the wonderful locals. I only wish there was the chance to score this more than 5 because words cannot express our delight. Nothing on the description of this property is false. Alfie is a charming, charismatic man who goes out of his way to ensure that you have everything you need, right down to showing where the bus stop is.

If every we revisit Malta this will be our first choice for accommodation and certainly extremely high on our recommendations to family and friends.

Thank you Alfie.

“WHEN NIGHTS WERE KNIGHTS . . . . . . .”
Reviewed November 12, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

On arrival, we bought our weekly bus tickets at the Airport for €6.50 and caught the X7 bus to Birgu; which took around 35 mins. We met Alfie in ‘d Central’ Bar and then walked to the property. Having studied the pictures on Trip Advisor, we immediately felt at home. Alfie gave us a ‘guided tour’ of the apartment and left us with a ‘Useful Information Sheet’. He had also kindly provided bread, ham, cheese, milk, water and fruit which allowed us to settle in gently before needing provisions. We were unsighted to the €1, €2 Coin Electric Meter which Alfie ‘credits’ with €2/day; in the end we used €11.89 out of our €30 balance - sensible use should cost you nothing! The apartment is delightful and is very well equipped, having everything you could need including a hair dryer. It is also located in one of the most picturesque streets in Birgu. We fell in love with Birgu and nearby Senglea (Isla) whose combined architectural beauty is comparable to that of Valletta.
There is a ferry to Valletta which we didn’t use and were more than happy to walk 10 mins to the bus stop, just outside the ‘walls’. We had downloaded the bus timetables to our iPad however you could simply use your ‘smart’ phone and take a picture of the timetable(s) at the bus stop(s). Returning from Valletta we would catch the No 2 bus to Bigu ‘Riche’ or alternatively we would take a No 1 to Isla and enjoy a 20 min walk via Senglea waterfront and over the foot-bridge to Birgu. We found ‘Google Maps’ very useful and in particular the fact that you can see the bus-stops ‘by name’ and when you are familiar with the area you can swap buses, before Valletta, when travelling to other destinations.
Our adventure in Malta ended much much too quickly and we departed with very fond memories of 20, Gilormu Cassar and our friend Alfie. Our great fear of sounding so upbeat is that we will struggle to get a future booking!

“Beautiful house, stunning location, perfect host”

We were lucky enough to spend 10 days in Alfie,s house and we relished every second. Perfectly situated in a stunning 16th century stepped street and only two minutes from the main square alfies place is ideal for exploring birgu (a history lovers dream) or using as a base for seeing all malta (Valletta is only 5 mins away by ferry @ 2:80 euros return). The house itself is all exposed beams and bare stone walls with a lovely balcony off of the master bedroom allowing you to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet of a beautiful traffic free street. The second bedroom has two single beds and a lovely arched ceiling. Air conditioning and fans allow for the house to stay perfectly cool even on the hottest maltese days. Birgu is a truly unique city where you can nearly forget about modern life entirely. Full of wonderful cafes and restaurants you can sample the real maltese way of life. Finally our host Alfie who went out of his way to make our holiday something special, picking us up and returning us to the airport, showing us around to give us our bearings, introducing us to the wonderfully friendly locals and always being available to any request. A charming man we hope we can call our friend. The perfect holiday in the perfect location. Many thanks Alfie shane and jemma

“Comfortable stay in an impressive, historic setting”
Reviewed September 24, 2014 for a stay in September 2014

We stayed in Alfie's Birgu apartment for just four nights (he was booked up either side) but enjoyed every minute of it. Birgu is one of "the three cities", a little walled town on a peninsula opposite the south side of Valletta, and a trip round its backstreets is listed as one of the top ten things to do in Malta according to Lonely Planet, so it's a privilege to be able to stay in one of those same quaint alleyways.

Alfie is a vivacious and helpful host who makes sure you know how to make the most of your stay. The small but clean and well-equipped apartment is, like everything in Malta, made of limestone and provides a cool (air-conditioned) haven for an afternoon siesta - we travelled in September, and doing anything strenuous between 12-4pm is not advisable! He has even provided a cool box for making picnic lunches, and had some bread, milk, tea, coffee and other useful things waiting for us in the fridge. He also does what all of our hosts in Malta seem to do - leave half bottles of sun lotion, after sun, insect repellent etc. from previous guests for our use. Some people may think this looks messy but we benefitted from this leftovers more than once and it is far better than constantly wasting them!

Downstairs is a kitchen and dining area with adjoining bathroom (toilet/shower/basin and also a washing machine), upstairs a large double room with wardrobes and drawers, and smaller twin room. Perfect for a couple, with or without small children (there is a gate at the top of the stairs).

Birgu is very picturesque - more so than anywhere else I think, perhaps other than Mdina - and the nearby square with small shops and restaurants feels friendly and lively. There are a few good options to eat (Osteria.ve being a favourite which intend to review) but it is easy and cheap to take a water ferry into Valetta (buses are also easy and cheap but take much longer) and Marsaxlokk is a short drive away (younger travellers, be sure to check out Peter's Pool for some fun rock jumping!).
Please be aware, you cannot leave your car within Birgu overnight (only residents with permits can stay beyond 150 minutes) but free street parking is available just the other side of the roundabout at the entrance to Birgu, a five minute walk if that. Parking in Malta is surprisingly easy, it is either free, free but time limited or requires a small informal tip (1€) to an attendant. Never the dreaded pay and display! There is also no ATM in Birgu, the nearest is a leisurely 15 minute walk away in Vittoriosa (we never fully understood the difference between Vittoriosa and Birgu; I think the former is everything on the peninsula that is not part of the old walled city).

Overall, if you want to stay near Valetta with beautiful harbour views around every corner in historic, picturesque surroundings, you cannot do better than to stay at Alfie's place.
