Having spent two summers working for a holiday company in the Ardeche a quarter of a century ago I was keen to show my wife how wonderful that area of France is. We have travelled widely in Fance and now luckily own a property in the Languedoc, however there is something of theatre and spectacle in the Pont d'arc and the stunning scenery of the stark limestone gorges falling out of the Cevennes to the Rhone, which are well worth seeing.
We booked the Auberge le Chardon on a whim and the reviews from trip adviser. A amall comfortable inn off the tourist trail of over priced campsites and tatty shops, seemed ideal. It did not disappoint! The village of Vagnas remains broadly untroubled by the passing trend for globalised tourism and Thai foot massage to which Vallon Pont d'Arc seems prone. The welcome by Graeme and Caoline was superb, the auberge le Chardon, does exactly what an Auberge should do: reasonable local wine, good wholesome nutrisious meals and a convivial welcome by the hosts. If you want to visit the Ardeche gorges this should be on your list.More
