“Home from Home”
Reviewed May 2, 2013 for a stay in April 2013

We have just returned from the 'Engine House' Everything you could want a home from home. The scenery is wall to wall countryside - birds squirrels even deer! It is a sharp walk to a grassy path - to the right leads to a very pleasant stroll. To the left you spy a steep track to the lake the climb is so worth it - take a shopping trolley to carry your picnic and spend the day in total peace and tranquility. We live locally in Torbay with a kitchen being fitted we decided to leave home - we had the best time - We will be back!

“Superb place offering a truly relaxing holiday”
Reviewed April 8, 2013 for a stay in April 2013

We stayed during the coldest Easter for many years but were warm and cosy in the Engine House. The lake is up a steep track but our 5 year old made is and fell in love with it. As others say, the property feels bigger than you see in the photos and is like staying in a modern apartment but with the luxurious countryside around. Beds were very comfortable and everything was spotless when we arrived. The owners were there to help with a quick call but totally non-intrusive so we really felt welcome without any fuss. Lisa answered all questions before we arrived anyway!

We were able to shop in Exeter which is an easy drive (in fact I even hosted a WebEx for my work using the local Wetherspoons for the price of a coffee...).

One person mentioned mobile problems but I had full coverage (I use Vodafone Spain) so I guess that is a provider issue.

My wife and I have traveled extensively and can safely say that the care and attention to this place is spot on and I would not only recommend it, but would push past to get another stay there.

“Beautiful cottage”

My son booked this for 4 of us as we needed a break after 2 tragic events. The Cottage was absolutely beautiful, set high on a hill with breathtaking views. It had everything we needed and more! I did not expect it to be as big as it was and was cosy and warm (we went in February). The little village shop is close by and we had some wonderful walks, including the private lake. Unfortunately at the time of year we went, we could not go out in the boat but intend to go again, hopefully in the summer. If you are looking for total peace and tranquility, I cannot recommend The Engine House enough. The only sounds you hear are the stream below and the sound of owls and other wildlife. George, the owner of the property, was very nice and happy to suggest places of interest to visit. I would recommend this cottage without hesitation and intend to revisit asap!

“Idyllic, peaceful, PERFECT place to stay!”
Reviewed September 28, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

The old Engine House is set back from a quiet lane between Christow and Bridford in its own grounds, totally private, surrounded by trees, and has been beautifully converted into a spacious, well-equipped two-bedroomed cottage. I stayed here for 12 nights, looking for peace, quiet, privacy and beautiful countryside and it was just PERFECT!
The house itself has a big living/kitchen/dining room with french windows that open out onto the front lawn and paved area, with lovely views across the woods and hills. There is also a small courtyard garden at the back that gets the afternoon sun and has an undercover seating area. The house was lovely & clean and has everything you could need - comfy beds, bedlinen and towels provided, central heating, good shower, freezer, washing machine, satellite TV & DVD player. I did get a mobile phone signal but there is no internet access, not a problem for me but there are libraries/cafes in Exeter & Moretonhampstead if you need this.
Lovely walks from the door, including the walk up to the private lake, where you can visit families of well-fed carp (George only lets his guests fish there so they are rather tame!), see dragonflies and even a family of deer that live in the woods. Fantastic! Be warned though, the walk up to the lake is VERY steep & about 15 minutes, but more than repays the effort!
All this and only about 20 minutes drive into Exeter, 25 minutes to Dartmoor High Moor. You will need your own transport though - it's a LONG walk to the bus stop!
Absolutely lovely people, too - George the owner manages to be completely unobtrusive whilst also making you feel totally welcome and that nothing is too much trouble. His daughter Lisa was above & beyond helpful and even texted me to check I'd arrived OK!
I can't praise this property enough, if you are looking for that idyllic get-away-from-it-all retreat, like to relax, enjoy walking and the devon countryside, this is for you!

“A Wonderful Summer Holiday”
Reviewed September 19, 2012 for a stay in July 2012

Well, what can we say.......It was a superb setting with far reaching tranquil views. It was quiet (which was a change to the city life) and clean. A must with my other half.

We were met by George, who was the local cantact. He was extremely helpful. He showed us around and made sure we had everything we needed. The kids were already excited with the abundance of outside space to go and explore. Set at the top of a vllage called Christow on the Eastern part of Dartmoor, it was remote (you couldn't hear anything looking out at the far reaching views) but within a mile we were at the local shop that had everything we had forgotten and some lovely local produce.

We explored the area, and were very pleased with the lovely walks around it. There were some brochures in the holiday let, and as we never really plan these things we took and handful and went and did them. We went to the beach which took about an hour to get too. The kids loved it as we managed to sort that for one of the sunny days this summer. A skatepark and playparks were all within walking distance of the beach itself.

We also went to Pennywell, which we must admit we did not have high hopes for, but the abundance of hands on play with animals went down a treat with the kids again. Crealy park, on the outskirts of Exeter was great, and the kids wanted to spend most of the day there. Also an added bonus was a new skate park they had built in Christow. The kids love scootering and whenever we came back to the holiday let they woud plead to go down there for an hour.

We only ate twice in, and all the usual cooker, microwave facilities helped. We tried out some of the local pubs on a couple of the evenings, which were all great, but a couple of miles down the road, was a pub called The Manor at Ashton, and the food was superb. A real find, that was recommended by George.

We also visted Canonteign falls which is (supposedly) the highest waterfall in the UK. Sadly we went on one of the rainydays, but could see its attraction if the weather was good.

When the children winded down in the evening we would walk around the beautiful set area the Engine House was placed, and came across deer, birds of prey and plenty of rabbits.

If you are looking for somewhere as a get away fom the real hustle and bustle of the city, we couldn't recommend somewhere more lovely. The kids really enjoyed it, and we loved the peacefulness. We will be returning next year (fingers crossed).
