The family that runs this hotel act like it's their home that, unfortunately, guests use at times. The service was crap, the room was clean but miserable. They were doing construction by our room at 8am with grinders and power saws. They blasted their music at night from their family room and they basically left it to the incompetent kids to run the place. We have moved to the nunnery hotel up the road which is 1000 times better. Don't stay at Hotel Rima unless you are desperate!

Rima has basic but decent rooms and a range of options depending on how tight your budget is. It also has decent food, an upstairs bar area (few and far between in Flores) and a pretty front patio so you can sit out in the sun (though it is by a main road). The best thing about it though, is the family that run it. They really looked after us throughout our stay. They were always happy to answer any questions we had and were a godsend when my wife had a motorbike accident and needed stitches in her knee. They took us to the hospital and to the mechanics to get the bike fixed and did it all with a smile. I look forward to visiting them again sometime.

I did not see any of the other choices in Ruteng so it is difficult to know whether this is the best of a bad bunch or if some perseverance in looking will mean you can find somewhere better. This place really is terrible value for money. Poor accommodation is to be expected in Flores but this is expensive as well.

Rooms:
I would recommend against the en-suite rooms as it was pricey and smelled (we had to use tiger balm under our noses to get to sleep) and there were no sinks anywhere in the hotel from what we could see. The room was also not sealed (we stuffed towels into the gaps to keep the mosquitoes out). The hotel is on the main road and therefore extremely loud not aided by the wooden interior and several staircases which meant we could hear people above us clattering about. It is possible to order a bucket of hot water to have a hot mandi but it was comparatively expensive and only half full. The locks on the ground floor room were also broken so we had to leave our bags packed and locked to furniture inside.

Facilities:
After the dirty crockery / cutlery we were given with our complementary tea/coffee on arrival we decided to eat dinner elsewhere. The breakfast was poor. It took an hour to get a beer in the evening as they had run out. There is internet which was pretty fast and though we did not use it, they offer a transport service (driver hire / onward bus tickets). There is a bar/communal area to sit and read which was needed given how depressing the room was!

Flores is a great destination and highly recommended. Hopefully the hotel standards will soon match the prices. Be prepared with your expectations and you will enjoy the place, if not the accommodation.

I travelled 2 months through Indonesia. We tasted various kinds of accom. in Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok and Flores. Although Rima hotel seems to be the "best" available hotel in town, the standards by no means corresponds with the price they are asking. Crammed rooms with narrow bunk beds where u have to walk sideways to move around, cold bathrooms in the cellar, they call themselves hotel but instead of charging per room, they charge per person. Big plus is internet connection in the hotel but again they charge absolutely ripp off price. There is few more places to stay in Ruteng for much cheaper price so if u have time look around.
