We recently stayed three nights at Palazzo Venturelli, a lovingly restored historic palazzo in one of Umbria's most untouched towns. Guglielmo is a charming host who makes everyone feel at home. The care that he has put into restoring this wonderful place shows in every room and in the pride he takes in welcoming guests. This palazzo is a magic place.

We stayed in the beautiful blue room. I would never get bored of waking up to amazing frescoes on the ceiling and opening up the massive windows to look out at the magnificent landscape.

If you are looking for a special place to stay that is not over run with tourists, visit Amelia and stay at Palazzo Venturelli.

If you've always wondered what one of those fabulous, imposing, but maddeningly closed Italian Renaissance palazzos looks like on the inside, here's your chance! Palazzo Venturelli was built ca. 1450 and has been lovingly restored by Guglielmo and Rita Antonini. The palazzo has three suites, each exquisitely furnished. The beds are big and very comfortable, fitted with luxurious linens. Guglielmo and Rita couldn't be more personal or enthusiastic in their service, and their collaborator, Michela, speaks excellent English. We stayed in the "camera gialla" (the yellow room) which has three (!) large windows and a spectacular view of the rolling Umbrian countryside, complete with an allee' of cypress trees in the distance. The breakfasts are generous and delicious and are offered either on the terrace or in a lovely frescoed dining room. Ask Guglielmo for a tour of the original kitchen with walk-in fireplace, his cantina (wine cellar) , the tasting room, and---the Roman mosaics in the basement. As a bonus, the hilltown of Amelia, in which the palazzo is located, is enclosed by a polygonal stone wall dating from 2000 B.C. The Cascata delle Marmore, an impressive series of waterfalls, is only a half hour's drive, and you can reach Rome in less than an hour by car. You'll never want to leave!
