“Rather grand pretensions ...”
Reviewed 7 March 2010

Set in pretty gardens but sadly just down the hill so no view of the nearby volcanoes. A bit isolated and not within walking distance of any restaurants.

Our room was a shared bungalow - reasonable size but smallish bed. Hot water in the bathroom, rather a luxury in parts of Sulawesi! The walls are wafer thin and we had a snoring neighbour which resulted in a sleeless night..

The restaurant is in fact just another bungalow with a few tables. Breakfast was basic depsite the rather fancy menu offering a choice of American, continental or Indonesian brekkies.

Helpful and friendly staff.

Spent 3 nights in the resort at the end of our month long honeymoon in Sulawesi. I'd pre-booked the stay via email and we were picked up in Manado on time in a smart vehicle. We were given a complimentary massage on arrival, the girls were very friendly so we returned (not the most relaxing massage though). The suite was very private, and breakfast was served on our balcony at no extra charge.
The laundry service was excellent (although not cheap).
We arranged a full guided tour on arrival, Alex was very knowledgeable regarding the local people.
The motorbike hire was great fun to explore.
Overall we didn't want to leave, that said I think we would have been bored if we'd stayed, with the lack of places to eat generally in the area.
Wifi was not available throughout our stay.

stay 3 nights last September in this resort in a Deluxe????cottage(50 euro) with an average bed,a dirty and basic bathroom.
The young and incompetent galls and guys who run the restaurant don't speak English and serve a very basic food on neglected tables...
As we found the driver friendly and the guide at the lobby reliable,we did 2 overpriced, but nice tours:Minahasa highland tour for 45 euro each and Tangkoko park( 60 each)..
Because of Ramadan, the spa was closed.

We had a look on the accomodations and a dinner at the close Gardenia in Tomohon:nice food, clean accomodation, professional service...STAY THERE!

The resort management and owner regret the shortcomings during this guest's stay at Highland Resort. Part of these problems occured because of the resort being short of staff during that time, due to some unexpected circumstances. Be assured that all problems mentioned in this review have been fixed in the meantime.

We got off the plane in Manado after a very long journey and were promptly picked up by the driver, who took us on an hour long drive up into the highlands where we stayed for a couple of nights recuperating from jet lag. The bungalows are fairly basic - nothing fancy. The bathroom is extremely basic - there isn't even a toilet paper dispenser (although toilet paper was provided). The lighting is dim, and the bungalow had an antiseptic smell to it. The setting is quiet and peaceful, but you're really not that far from the main road. It's a couple of miles to Tomohon, which is not a village, but rather quite a big city.
The food offered at the resort is extremely basic. You might also want to check out the resort next door (Onong's Palace) for lunch or dinner, because their restaurant is bigger and more established, but the food there was nothing to write home about either. We got a one hour massage for $12.50 which was great! We also took the hike down to the waterfall, which was worth doing, but be aware it is all uphill on the way back (we got a scooter ride with some villagers instead of making the trek). The waterfall is impressive, but so is the amount of garbage accumulated at the bottom.
The pricing was weird. If you pay in euros, it was 50 euro. But if you paid in rupia, it was 35,000 (i.e. $35.00 vs. $70.00). My recommendation is pay in rupia. It is worth $35.00, not $70.00. Didn't do any of the tours they offered - they all seemed overpriced.
Overall, staying in or outside of Tomohon is a great way to see some Sulawesi nature and culture (check out the morning market in Tomohon!) and get over jet lag before heading to Bunaken for diving.
