It was a feeling of dejavu as this palace reminds one immediately of the Alhambra in Andalusia, Spain. Ruined by the French and renovated quite recently, this palace with its beautiful tiles, the pool and the ornate carvings should be visited followed by a visit to the mosque which is now a museum and the costume exhibition. The 15 kilo jewelry worn by brides was especially interesting.

The Mechouar is an enormous walled enclosed containing a restored mosque, a shop selling "artisanat" from all over, and a recently restored Zianide palace with impressive cut-tile decoration throughout. Apparently, the Algerian artisans collaborated with some from Fez in the many years it took to remake the palace. Also within the Mechouar is a museum of Algerian costume types, all newly reconstructed and well-displayed.

An amazing palace.. with an interesting history, we took beautiful photos .. guides are helpful,we got a discount because we were more than 10 and had students among us. There were many models with traditional fancy tlemcenian clothings .. the place takes you away in the past.. I visit it every time I go to tlemcen ... It really is a must.

Wandered around here, pleasantly calm inside the walls. There is a museum wit some ceramics and another with traditional dress. The Moorish building is beautiful.
Lots of cafés to choose from outside.

Welcome break after long walk in from Hotel Ibis. The museum has small display of women's costumes that shows mutual influences of western and oriental design at time when French fascinated by Algeria.

View from ramparts great.

Tourism office is opposite but easy to miss and not open the Saturday I was there.

Tlemcen perfectly safe for foreigners and you will get a warm welcome.
