“Good resort for staying with young children, close to beach short transfer time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2009

We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment with our 2 year old daughters at Roda golf resort which we booked through Babyboltholes website. The apartment we had was spacious with good size bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, aircon and a large terrace which was nice and shady in the mornings. Our apartment was fantastically well equipped for toddlers as we booked it through the specialist baby holidays website - obviously the apartments will vary. Our apartment had a fenced in terrace which was essential for the children.

Overall, the resort is only 10 minutes from san javier airport in murcia so a short transfer time. It is a huge resort you can see it way before your arrival. You do need a car if you are staying there as its a short drive to the local resort, Los Alcazares and the beach (approx 10 mins) but a long walk in 30-35 degrees heat otherwise. As the Roda Golf resort is so big we could not walk to the clubhouse from our apartment it woudl be a 40 min walk so had to drive, the convenience store is also based there so again needed to drive. There are lots of pools dotted around, you are never more than 50 metres from one, lovely pools quite warm with steps down (not gated). There are play areas on the resort but not gated and strangely not situated in the landscaped pedestrian areas but on the road s so not really suitable for young children- never saw anyone playing on them.

Clubhouse - very good food, slightly strange service e.g waiters arguing in spanish in front of us. Lovely terrace outside the clubhouse but you can see and hear motorway traffic in distance.

Cannot comment on the golf or tennis as did not use but looked to be excellent facilities very well maintained.

we did not go to the beach club as its quite a distance away and woudl have involved us taking car seats with us for transportation when get off ferry plus the beaches locally were very good. sandy with nice warm sea and shelving gently for children.

Los alcazares local resort - nice beaches, pedestrianised walkways with play areasfor children and also good access for disabled people. Some cafes/bars etc along the way - spanish restaurants don't start serving food till 1.30pm but can get tapas before that, english bars/restaurants do food all day. In the evenings, the resort is still quite quiet. Its a modern resort been open about 25 years, its not traditional spanish. Nice restaurant patio II. Good beach at el mejon as well, play area and cafes on beach.

weather in september 30 - 35 degrees but lovely breeze.

all in all we had a great holiday at roda golf with our toddlers, the pools, the beach, the short transfer time and the great apartment and weather made for a super holiday. If you want traditional spain though this is not the place, the area is scrubland, agricultural land and many many golfing resorts. for sightseeing and culture go elsewhere, for beaches and golf this is a good choice.

Rented a 2 bed townhouse on this golf resort. Clean and comfortable - although did not have the dishwasher described in the details.(we booked through Exclusively Murcia) Pools good size, clean and often empty. Clubhouse offers free wi-fi (essential to give the kids their internet fix!) and lunch menu reasonable with 10% resident discount. Not golfers ourselves, so cannot comment on golfing facilities.

We did visit the Roda Golf Beach Club (12 euro pp) which was a bus/ferry/bus trip which took at least 1 hour each way. The beach resort was quiet when we visited (a Weds) but were told that it got busy at weekends. Pool area was very pleasant but beach was not very well kept, with cigarette butts and leaves in the sand which was obviously never cleaned. Sea was very shallow but had a layer of green seaweed underfoot. Food and drinks very pricey - ice drink 5 euro, toasted sandwich 7 euros etc.

Nearest town Los Narejos - nice pedestrianised street with many restaurants catering for all tastes. Los Alcazares much more Spanish in feel with mostly beachside cafes and a few shops. Beach very clean, but busy. Both places too far to walk from Roda Golf (in August anyhow) so a car was essential.

Clean, nice pools (about 11 of them) but too far away from anything at all to be good for anyone other than dedicated golfers. We had a hire car and still found it to be remote, especially if you want to have an evening meal with some wine .. one of you has to abstain. Went into Los Alcazares a couple of times but it was so quiet, we had read that it is very Spanish and liked that aspect, but it was more quiet than we expected. We don't like the "Brits on tour" type resort, but this was seriously off the beaten track. Roda is a 5* resort and is clean, no issues at all with that, although the apartment (2 bedroom) was smaller than we have had in the Caribbean or South Africa. Other downside in May was that the water in the pools was so cold it wasn't an option to swim! Perhaps that helped to make this what we both consider to be one of the worst holidays we have had in 10 years of holidaying together (Spain, Greece, Caribbean. South Africa, Canaries and all multiple times). And of course the Euro exchange rate didn't help as it proved to be an expensive holiday all things considered.

We stayed for one week at these apartments. The grounds are kept spotless and the pools are great, the one outside of the apartment we rented was never busy and usually empty apart from us until about 11am!! The food at the club house is lovely and the English waitress Gemma is a testament to the place and very helpful, however, they don't seem to perform well under pressure! Locally I would recommend eating in the square, all of the cafes here were pretty good. The beaches in los alcazares can get really busy, so I would also recommend hiring a car and going out to Calblaque if you like beautiful quiet beaches. We didn't visit the private beach club as this costs 12 Euros each (including a 4yr old!) and we were advised once there the bar/restaurant is a bit pricey - but not having been I can't really comment. We also didn't play golf, but the course looked immaculate and was maintained constantly whilst we were there. Overall, the apartments, pools and complex are lovely, quiet and spacious and great for young children, and ideal for self catering as the kitchens are really well equipped. I would strongly recommend car hire if you want to visit the beaches and cafes outside of the complex as walking any distance in the heat of mid summer is no fun with children!
