“Enchanted by the Sol Pelicano”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 February 2012

January 21st to 28th, 2012

A Super Big Thank you to the Air Canada Representative
Fernandez, for moving us to the Sol Pelicano, it was greatly appreciated.

This was one of our very best vacations in Cuba to date. This resort has a team of very hard working people, all engaged in making your stay a great time. Each member of this team included the reception, bellboys, waiters in the buffet - (Entre Mares), Ranchon - (Los Quelonios), snack bar - (Zun Zun), lobby bar - (El Catery), towel exchange - (Club House) and our maid Deysi at our room - (47th block). The people in the background: back kitchen cooks, supplies, laundry, grounds and garden keepers, beach attendants and managers at this resort. Thank you to all for making our vacation an enchanting time. Some key people who stood out as individuals during our stay where: Erick, Gustabo, Guillermo and Fidel.

We love the ocean and we intended to spend most of our time on the beach. On this vacation we did more activities and more socializing. Many people talked about their visit to the turtle sanctuary, natural beaches (Playa Paraiso and Playa Sirena) and touring the island on scooters, as well taking the catamaran tour. Schedule your tours early because they book up quickly.

We celebrated the Chinese New Year on January 23rd, “The Year of the Dragon”. This resort is a wonderful place to celebrate and have fun, we sure did.

In the evening after the stage show ended there is a disco at the lobby bar. They played a good variety of music including current hits, techno, and club dance as well Latin club dance. During our stay, the crowd was a blend of people from a number of different countries. It didn’t matter about the language barrier as most everyone just came for the fun and having a great time. We couldn’t resist the fun, five out of the seven nights, we joined in dancing. For anyone wanting to continue dancing later into the night, there is a disco over at Marina, which is just a short bus ride for 2 CUC’s each way.

During our stay, we saw a number of people at the pool and out on the beach playing beach volley ball and aerobic exercising. Some things you may do at the resort include, climbing the famous resort tower, playing on one of the two tennis courts, Bocce (tossing balls like horse shoes in the sand pit), playing chest on the oversized chess board, walking the many pathways around this resort or, maybe just relaxing as there are so many little spots that are quiet for doing just that and reading a book.

In the late afternoon as the sun was setting, we enjoyed sitting on our balcony, listening to the soft new age music drifting over from the pool area. In the evenings at the main buffet there was a Mariachi band playing music.

This resort is tidy, organized, kept clean and the grounds are being attended to. Our room was a modest space with twin beds pushed together to make a king size bed. There was a small fridge, TV and safe (same key card is used for safe and door), we used our Milockie safe lock for added security. The room was kept clean, including mirrors and the floor was spotless.

One visitor told us how they had taken the bus over to the Playa Sirena & Playa Paraiso, and then ambitiously walked back to the Sol Pelicano (a 2.5 hour walk :) ). We took a stroll on the beach one morning toward Playa Blanca, and took some brilliant pictures of the ocean and the waves on the East side by the Capricho. During our stay we were fortunate that the ocean was so much calmer in front of the Sol Pelacano.

The food is good, with a great variety of meats: fish, chicken, beef, cold cuts and cheeses; a good choice of vegetable dishes (cooked and fresh). Each day in the evening there is home made pasta (three kinds) and sauces. At breakfast there are two cooks available to make eggs to order and in the evening another two cooks would grill fresh meat to order. They have fresh baked bread, pastries, deserts, cookies and croissants every day and as always the yummy ice cream in Cuba. There is a good choice of beverages: soft drinks, juices, tea, and coffee, as well liquor spirits, beer and wine. For those wanting to eat on a later schedule there is a pizza restaurant - (La Pergola). Should one miss eating at any of the restaurants during scheduled hours, the lobby bar can make them a sandwich, along with biscuits and cookies. They have a good choice of beverages too. One need not go hungry or thirsty at this resort, again personal taste and choice respected.

We had come prepared and received only a few bug bites during our stay. For our room we had brought along aroma therapy scents and atomizer which kept the room smelling nice and the bugs away. A point of interest, there is a small pharmacy with medical person at this resort.

We purchased rum at the resort store, not wanting to wait until we returned to the airport. We didn’t adventure over to the Marina on this trip, where there is more selection of goods for sale.

This resort will likely exceed the expectations of most individuals and families. Go and have a super vacation, Albertabucanero.

This was our second trip to the Sol Pelicano in Cayo Largo with friends that came with us last year, but this time we brought our 20 year old son. Once again we were not dissappointed! The best part of this hotel is the staff that they hire! They are friendly and accomodating and quickly make you feel like part of their family. When i wrote my first review of this hotel last year, i took a little flack for not mentioning anything negative but to be honest, i was not expecting the best of the best! I just wanted to go somewhere and relax. If you can get the "ideal 5 star treatment" out of your head, and remember that you are on an island in Cuba that has all of its supplies brought in by boat so sometimes they run out of things, then you will have a great time.

The air conditioning worked, our rooms had hot water, comfortable beds and maid service every day. The food was abundant and tasted good. Excursions were awesome and reasonably priced. Its a 10 minute bus ride from the airport to the hotel! Our room wasn't ready immediately when we arrived but they directed us to where we could change into our swim suits, and within 10 minutes we were on the beach with a drink in our hands, and had our room an hour later. I have read on this site that people get ticked off by this when it happens but really........it's sunny, 26 degree's, food and drink everywhere, and you have nothing else to do.....Wow!

One thing that really stood out to us this year was that since we had been here once before and had gotten to know some of the staff already, it was amazing that even people that we had minimal contact with remembered us! They remembered conversations we had had with them! Incredible people! In some ways, the staff made us feel as if we were coming home....our second home and we are now planning our return trip asap!

Sol Pelicano _ January 21st to 28th 2012
A very special Thank-you to Fernandez, the Air Canada Vacation representative, for assisting us with a transfer from Playa Blanca to the Sol Pelicano.
Walking into the Sol Pelicano for the first time, was like being greeted by dear old friends, we were instantly made welcome by smiling bellboys who took our luggage and assured us that it would be delivered to our room. The bellboys then in turn ushered us to the warm, friendly front desk Staff who in turn were very fast and efficient checking us in. Because we transferred and were not expected we had to wait for our room for 30 minutes, so we had four options to get something to eat and drink; Lobby bar, Buffet, Snack bar( by the pool), Ranchon ( by the beach). We choose to eat at the buffet and after an enjoyable meal and several glasses of wine we waltz to our room.

Our air conditioned room was on the second floor in the 47th block, we were very pleased as it was nicely situated giving us easy access to the beach, pool, buffet and lobby. Our maid Deysi was fantastic, she did an excellent job, and our room was kept spotless every day. Deysi also made sure we had extra water, towels and toilet paper as per our request. Entrance to the room is with a key card, you use the same card on your free room safe; we used our Milockie safe lock for extra peace of mind. There is a television and fridge in the room, two beds were pushed together to make a king, so other than avoiding the crack it was comfortable, so were the pillows. Our only complaint about the room, if you could even call it that was the water pressure was really low during certain times of the day, you do need to let the water run a bit for it to get warm, but seriously this was not a problem for us. We love aroma therapy oils so we used them in our diffuser, it gave our room such beautiful smell to match the ambiance of the piped in new age music, that we could hear from the pool later each afternoon; what a beautiful experience.

The beach at the Pelicano is absolutely breath taking. In either direction you can walk for miles in soft powdery white sand, while looking out at that magnificent turquoise ocean. We took our own shade tent and air beds so we could sleep in and avoid chair and shade wars, but this was not necessary at the Pelicano. There are plenty of chairs, palapa, cabaña huts and portable beach umbrellas and the beach staff are there to help you set up if you need their help. The Pelicano beach is situated in a cove so it is more protected, we were fortunate during our stay that the Ocean was calm for the most part or, had gentle rolling waves, also the weather was fantastic. There were some clouds and a gentle breeze, which were a relief when you spend hours on the beach like we do. There is a net set up on the beach for volley ball, also beach aerobics. But no worries if you like peace and quiet on the beach like we do because there is an Au-natural section which is clearly marked, please note that naturism is well accepted in Cayo Largo and it is common to see naked people tanning and walking on the beach. There are also two natural beaches that you can go to where the Ocean is normally calmer (Playa Paraiso and Play Sirena), the cost by taxi is 2 pesos each way.

There are two pools; one for Adults and Children, there is also a Kids club. The animation crew is very active at this hotel, lots of activities available during the day. After the show in the evening there is a disco at the lobby bar that goes on for a few hours, then for those who want to keep on dancing, you can go with the animation crew to the Marina. The cost for transportation is 2 pesos each way, drinks at the Mariana are cheap, under a peso. The Marina is the best place to go to purchase Rum and Cigars, the second place would be at the hotel gift shop, there are also vendors set up close to the Buffet each evening. Be warned that the airport is very small and does not have much to choose from at their duty free/gift shop, this has been consistent on all 4 visits to Cayo Largo, so your best bet is to do your shopping ahead of time.

You can eat and drink 24 hours at this hotel. For example some of the things they serve are beef, pork, chicken, turkey, fish, calamari, hamburgers, hot dogs, home-made pasta, etc. Fresh fruit - pineapple, guava, water melon, cantaloupe, honey dew melon. Salads bar with tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded cabbage, olives and more. They also had a variety of different cereals, bread, pastries, cookies, cakes, ice-cream etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see lettuce served at the Buffet and Ranchon all week, first time seeing lettuce in 12 visits to Cuba. You will not go hungry or, thirsty.

The key ingredient to this hotel is the total effort and constant monitoring of operations by the General Manager Luis. Our 5 star experiences came from the backbone of this hotel which is the wonderful Staff. Most all of the Staff during our stay were so friendly and did their best to do a good job. We are especially grateful to all of them especially Erick who went the extra mile; Gustabo, Yoel and Rene and last but certainly not least Guillermo and Fidel who not only take pride in their work, but who spoilt Hubby and I with their wonderful cappuccinos and Spanish coffee’s; I so miss their joy and sense of humor.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, Happy Holidays.

What can I say except don't believe the negative reviews about the Sol Pelicano. This resort fits the four star rating and then some.
Indeed it is no RIU and patrons don't have 24 hour drink and food service (everything seems to shut down at midnight) or beach drink service. Everything else at this hotel is excellent.
The beach is what puts it over the top though and if you are a beach person have no fear you will definitely enjoy the Sol Pelicano. Have low expectations and you will be pleasantly surprised by this resort.
Here is a rundown of the facilities and what to expect.

ROOMS: Clean, simple and functional. Very comfortable mattresses compared to the rest of Cuba and any recent trips I have been on to Mexico or other countries in the south. Maids were friendly and always fulfilled any requests.

FOOD: Buffet restaurant was very good and always had plenty of selection. The service and attention payed to detail by waitstaff was excellent. Each morning we were greeted by our waiter Adolfo at the front door and he insisted we sit in his section and was always quick to take our order and make sure we were happy. The Beach snack bar served great lunches and the calamari was excellent. Wasn't too big on the a'la carte restaurants but then again that is not why I came. Try the Pizza restaurant located to the right of the main lobby bar - it is open in the afternoon and the pizza will surprise you.

BAR: The main lobby bar closes a little early at Midnight - the other bars also close their doors a little early for my liking but then again when you are at a resort where the main focus is the beach then hitting the sack earlier is probably a good thing.

GROUNDS: It is very dry here and there is little rain so there is plenty of xeroscape gardening going on - native plants and very little grass - but the groundskeepers do a great job and are constantly manicuring the site.

BEACH: Life is a beach. This has to be one of the greatest beaches I have ever set foot on - Strange I have been searching for a beach like this and have visited over a dozen resorts but nothing matches this. Talcum powder sand, gentle waves, warm water, no rocks in the water - and the big bonus no jet skis or power boats or annoying vending sales pitches - a great place to relax - plus due to the southern facing old sol is over the water the entire day creating a brilliant reflection off the water and stunning sun set to the right of the hotel alone the shoreline. Roberto a.k.a. Kiko will make you feel at home.

POOL: Only came here a few times cause the beach was so beautiful but rest assured it was a nice salt water swimming pool.

STAFF: Overall I can't fault them at anything - they were always friendly and attentive despite being overworked with little sleep.

PATRONS: Here is the big bonus - everyone I ran into seemed to have realistic expectations and most were friendly and warm -

GIFTS: Cash is the best thing to bring the people so tip often - other gifts you could bring include children's toys, medicines pharmacy items, sporting goods (A pair of 10 or 11 running shoes is like gold), food items - any left over items you can't use on your trip - as long as they are unopened will be accepted by staff.

EXCURSIONS: Didn't do it but the catamaran cruises come highly recommended. A trip in a cab or on the island train to Playa Blanca or Playa Sirenis is highly recommended - you will not believe the stunning beauty and tranquility of these two beaches. It is no wonder they are rated in the top ten list of Caribbean beaches or that Columbus landed here not once but twice.

OVERALL: This hotel has a great thing going. If you are looking for night life or to be pampered in luxury this place is not for you. If you are looking for a great beach vacation for you and your partner, friends or children at an affordable price then look no further - The Sol Pelicano will provide this.

Note: I have been to several resorts in Mexico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Venezuela and have yet to find a better deal with all the bells and whistles. If you are thinking of booking at this resort but have been turned off by the negative reviews - don't listen to them - they are written by people with unrealistic expectations or those who are just out to knock Cuba (Florida Republicans?).

Room Tip: Dialogue with management for a room near the ocean in advance. We paid a little extra for our ocean...

I have been to Cuba 15 times and it seems to me that the people native to this gorgeous country could certainly teach others around the world the meaning of life. I find that what you get for your dollar in this breathtaking country is far more than anywhere else I've been!! Not just the food...the beach...the drinks....ITS ABOUT THE PEOPLE...never in my life have I been treated with such courtesy!!!...people should really start looking at the bigger picture!!

The Sol Pelicano is our second home for sure. If this review seems biased, so be it. We feel the staff of the Pelicano are our extended family. Why is that? Because they are that good and treat you as such. This year we stayed from the 20th-27th of January, our second stay & definately not our last...we will return each & every year. I Appologize to any staff member I miss, you are all dear to us.

Luis, Alexander & Yusmila were constantly checking in to make sure everything was good as did Tania & gelyvis. George & Martin were awesome in the lobby, both great guys. Michel was always scanning the resort making sure everything was smooth & safe.

Anita was running rampant in the lobby bar, her speed & quality of service never ceases to amaze me. The entertainers, musicians & dancers are high energy & keep going& going, makes me tired watching them. I promise next year Yani...Cuban street baseball!
The buffet was great as usual, wiyanka & adolopho, raybert team our favorites for sure as well as victor & geovanis. Gonzalas does a great job running the buffet & is ever smiling. Wide selection of food, we were always satisfied. Pizzeria is good as well.
We've always loved the ranchon & zun zun.Noel, Mario, Yanny & dinaldo, all of the other servers cooks & management do a spectacular job! Yannys the man at the Ranchon, love that guy! At the zun zun angel & Jose are awesome, my Cuban brother Moya is my favourite on the resort. I'd take a bullet for him. Tell him Miff says hi when you go!

Book your excursions & a la cartes ASAP, they fill up quick, use the computer facing you when you walk in the Internet cafe, it's much quicker. If you think you don't have hot water, check you're turning the water on in the right direction (my friend made that mistake), & give it 30 seconds to heat up. Bring lots of suntan lotion, the only Mosquitos we encountered were around 7 pm for about an hour, then gone & don't leave sweets out in your hotel room even if they are wrapped, that is when you will get little ants.
The chambermaids do an excellent job! Spotless every day, you could eat off the floors literally. This resort is rated number one on trip advisor in Cayo Largo for a reason, they are the best, work as a team & are a true family. PLEASE tip these people. They work so hard, with a smile on their face & never complain. Ticks me off to no end when people don't, I see people tip more here in Canada for service that doesn't even come close. They make peanuts & make you a better person getting to know them. The gardeners rarely get tipped & are out in the sun all day. Make an effort, they appreciate it so much.
If you're looking for a 5 star resort with wifi, shopping & Americanized atmosphere don't come. You won't find Starbucks or macdonald's. There is a disco at the marina, but if you are looking to go club hopping it's not for you. If you are looking to enjoy the greatest beaches in the carribean, with the best service, cleanest resort & relaxing atmosphere this is the place for you. It is a travesty this place is not open year round, my wife & I walked through every resort on the island, some were ok, but nothing touched the atmosphere with the feeling you get walking through. It is our second home & we will return at least once every year. We love you Sol Pelicano, Ange & Scott (Miff) will be back before you know it. If anyone has questions about anything or doubts if this review is legit contact me, I'll give you my phone number (in Belleville Ontario) if you doubt it or have any questions. Special shout out to bill, Jill, Matt, Leanne, Todd, kent, serge & Steve, & sylvains group...loved spending the week with you all!
