January 21st to 28th, 2012
A Super Big Thank you to the Air Canada Representative
Fernandez, for moving us to the Sol Pelicano, it was greatly appreciated.
This was one of our very best vacations in Cuba to date. This resort has a team of very hard working people, all engaged in making your stay a great time. Each member of this team included the reception, bellboys, waiters in the buffet - (Entre Mares), Ranchon - (Los Quelonios), snack bar - (Zun Zun), lobby bar - (El Catery), towel exchange - (Club House) and our maid Deysi at our room - (47th block). The people in the background: back kitchen cooks, supplies, laundry, grounds and garden keepers, beach attendants and managers at this resort. Thank you to all for making our vacation an enchanting time. Some key people who stood out as individuals during our stay where: Erick, Gustabo, Guillermo and Fidel.
We love the ocean and we intended to spend most of our time on the beach. On this vacation we did more activities and more socializing. Many people talked about their visit to the turtle sanctuary, natural beaches (Playa Paraiso and Playa Sirena) and touring the island on scooters, as well taking the catamaran tour. Schedule your tours early because they book up quickly.
We celebrated the Chinese New Year on January 23rd, “The Year of the Dragon”. This resort is a wonderful place to celebrate and have fun, we sure did.
In the evening after the stage show ended there is a disco at the lobby bar. They played a good variety of music including current hits, techno, and club dance as well Latin club dance. During our stay, the crowd was a blend of people from a number of different countries. It didn’t matter about the language barrier as most everyone just came for the fun and having a great time. We couldn’t resist the fun, five out of the seven nights, we joined in dancing. For anyone wanting to continue dancing later into the night, there is a disco over at Marina, which is just a short bus ride for 2 CUC’s each way.
During our stay, we saw a number of people at the pool and out on the beach playing beach volley ball and aerobic exercising. Some things you may do at the resort include, climbing the famous resort tower, playing on one of the two tennis courts, Bocce (tossing balls like horse shoes in the sand pit), playing chest on the oversized chess board, walking the many pathways around this resort or, maybe just relaxing as there are so many little spots that are quiet for doing just that and reading a book.
In the late afternoon as the sun was setting, we enjoyed sitting on our balcony, listening to the soft new age music drifting over from the pool area. In the evenings at the main buffet there was a Mariachi band playing music.
This resort is tidy, organized, kept clean and the grounds are being attended to. Our room was a modest space with twin beds pushed together to make a king size bed. There was a small fridge, TV and safe (same key card is used for safe and door), we used our Milockie safe lock for added security. The room was kept clean, including mirrors and the floor was spotless.
One visitor told us how they had taken the bus over to the Playa Sirena & Playa Paraiso, and then ambitiously walked back to the Sol Pelicano (a 2.5 hour walk :) ). We took a stroll on the beach one morning toward Playa Blanca, and took some brilliant pictures of the ocean and the waves on the East side by the Capricho. During our stay we were fortunate that the ocean was so much calmer in front of the Sol Pelacano.
The food is good, with a great variety of meats: fish, chicken, beef, cold cuts and cheeses; a good choice of vegetable dishes (cooked and fresh). Each day in the evening there is home made pasta (three kinds) and sauces. At breakfast there are two cooks available to make eggs to order and in the evening another two cooks would grill fresh meat to order. They have fresh baked bread, pastries, deserts, cookies and croissants every day and as always the yummy ice cream in Cuba. There is a good choice of beverages: soft drinks, juices, tea, and coffee, as well liquor spirits, beer and wine. For those wanting to eat on a later schedule there is a pizza restaurant - (La Pergola). Should one miss eating at any of the restaurants during scheduled hours, the lobby bar can make them a sandwich, along with biscuits and cookies. They have a good choice of beverages too. One need not go hungry or thirsty at this resort, again personal taste and choice respected.
We had come prepared and received only a few bug bites during our stay. For our room we had brought along aroma therapy scents and atomizer which kept the room smelling nice and the bugs away. A point of interest, there is a small pharmacy with medical person at this resort.
We purchased rum at the resort store, not wanting to wait until we returned to the airport. We didn’t adventure over to the Marina on this trip, where there is more selection of goods for sale.
This resort will likely exceed the expectations of most individuals and families. Go and have a super vacation, Albertabucanero.
