We spent a week in Bears Barn and were really cosy and comfortable despite the deep snow outside. The photos do not do the place justice, it is immaculate and well equipped. Despite being right on the main road, it was quiet, and being on the outskirts of the village meant an easy walk to the pub or shops. Many well marked walks go from the village so it was a great place to be based.

Just spent a week at the Bears Barn. The accommodation is very clean, well maintained and in the centre of Hartington. There is everything there you need and the bed is very comfy. We have never returned anywhere, but this is one place we intend to.

This was our second stay at The Bears Barn and none of its first visit charm was lost at all. It is a lovely place to stay, the accommodation is exceptionally well presented and cared for, and makes for a wonderful base to explore the Peak District. The village shops cater for most needs, The Rook Café directly opposite Bears Barn adds to the holiday feel and the staff there are so friendly and helpful - the food they serve is wonderful. Walks from the door through the dales, or a short drive away, so much to see and do.

“Jewel in the Dale”

If there is a better place for a couple to enjoy the countryside, I have yet to find it.

Bear's Barn is simply perfect: the size of the property, the cleanliness, the facilities on site, the large TV, the Log Burner and THE most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.

Leave the front door, cross the road and you begin one of the walks around the Hartington countryside. Spectacular doesn't do the views justice as you walk alongside the River Dove. One word of advice, though - one of the routes takes you along Biggin Dale and this should not be undertaken without sturdy boots. The riverside walks, though, can be tackled with ease and is well worth it.

The town itself is pretty much self contained. A General Store and newsagent that have enough variety of produce to keep you happy, the food in the Derbyshire Inn is terrific, there is a tea shop (which we didn't get a chance to sample), the café/gallery at Rooks (literally across the road from Bear's Barn) does some lovely lunches and has a take-away option on Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

One wee tip for you - take a little time to read through the two visitors' books going back to the late 1990s. Some good hints, humour and an insight to what people expect when they go on holiday, leading to some changes being made by the owner in response (and some suggestions begging belief!)

“Excellent place to stay and explore the Peak District”

Spent a great week staying at the Bears Barn. This is an ideal retreat for exploring the Peak district with 'everything' on the doorstep. Particularly pleasing that there is a really nice pub and a decent hotel within a hundred yards - so not far to go after a nice meal and sampling the local ales.
The accommodation itself is really nice, and not only comes fully equipped with all the 'usual stuff' there are also loads of books, dvd's games etc if you aren't as lucky with the weather as we were.
Everything was spotless when we arrived (and hopefully not too bad when we left!) and the accommodation is perfect for a couple. It's maybe a little dark in the living room - but it's a converted barn! Would have been nice to have a garden area to sit in the sun, but just had to make do with sitting outside the pub instead.
Never mind.

Definitely recommended both for quality of accommodation and the location.

An amazing cottage. It was very clean and very comfortable, could not fault it at all. Walks right on the doorstep and a fantastic pub in the Village (Devonshire Arms) did great food. Had a wonderful week staying there and would definitely go back to The Bears Barn again. Thank you to the owners for their brilliant upkeep and attention to detail.

The Barn is very well set up as a place to relax in and do nothing at all or use as a base to walk or cycle the countryside. Rooms are spotless and all appliances in excellent condition. Location is the middle of an attractive small village with several pubs within100 metres or so. We have stayed there twice now spending 2 weeks each time before returning to our home in Australia after European touring.
