We really enjoyed our experience on the SPR. The train and station are in top notch condition and the hosts were informative and friendly. Well worth the trip.

The train ride was very good in the perfectly restored coach. The conductor and host were excellent. Both had so much knowledge about the area, history and trains! Ever wonder why and when trains blow their whistles, what the signs along the railway mean or how a prairie elevator works? Then the Heritage trip is a must do. (We heard from others that the pitchfork fondue was excellent as well.) Your train fare also includes a pass to the Ogema Pioneer museum which has about 30 buildings set up in their original condition. It also features 100 restored antique and vintage tractors, combines, and equipment. Put this trip in your bucket - you won't be disappointed.

Heard about the the Southern Prairie Railway just an hour and a bit out of Regina in the small town of Ogema so decided it would be a great trip to my sister and brother-in-law came, who came and visited for the weekend. This is not a bullet train nor is it an old fashion steam train which was a bit disappointing due to the diesel fumes but all was good. SPR has several excursions to pick from we decided to go on the supper train. The meal is served up in the old church when you arrive in the up in the hamlet of Horizon; population of three. Good meal especially the beef and deserts. They had a small bar where you could get a beer, glass of wine or any major hard liquor for only $3.50 and that included the can of pop with my order of rum. Can't remember last time I paid that price for a drink. We had a great time visiting and enjoying the leisurely ride and one of the great things is that the coach is an old street car with bench seats can be turned to face each other. The conductor gave the history to the train and the surrounding area while you had a leisurely ride into the western prairie landscape.
With the price of the train ride and supper you get free admission to the great village museum that is in Ogema. I strongly suggest take the time to explore before the train leaves or if you are on the morning train after you get back, veery dducational for children. I is a collection of older houses, barns and businesses that have been restored and all brought in one area depicting the an Ogema " back in the day!" Takes you back in time of the early settlers and the transformation of Ogema and area from pre 1920's to present.
Great value for your dollar?
Staff very friendly and accommodating.

If your from the prairies, the scenery won't surprise you, but what will is the amount of love, care and effort that went into preserving/restoring the locomotive, passenger car and particularly the railway station in Ogema (which was cut in half to serve as a grain bin in the early 70s and then restored by this group, its phenomenal). If you go, I'd recommend taking either a morning or evening train, as it was quite hot during the day... but thats the only criticism I can offer.

Also - we picked up pasta at Solo Italia on Ogema's main street... and it was great.

This railway runs along a line also used by grain freight during the week. This means it runs much further than most heritage lines. The heritage trip we did ran from Ogema to Horizon taking about an hour each way, but there are also trips to Pangman in the other direction and special trips on specific days like Father's day. The countryside is undulating prairie but on a sunny day quite beautiful. The train and carriage were in perfect condition and the seats well padded. The stop at Horizon includes an interesting look at an abandoned grain elevator and a look at a model of Horizon in its heyday. Friendly staff and a good giftshop and childrens play train at Ogema made for a great day out. One warning -there are no refreshments at the station nor on board so take food and drink with you. Nice ice cream shop in Ogema though.
