We stayed in this apartment in Castro Urdiales and it was perfect ! The apartment was spotless and Jose and his wife were very friendly and helpful . We loved the pizzeria that was recommended by Jose. The apartment was in a fantastic location both near the town and the beach . We could also walk to the local supermarket. The pool was never really busy and is a good size . Castro Urdiales is a great town and we were lucky that there was a wonderful festival in August . We had a great holiday and didn’t want to come home !
We originally decided to stay in Castro Urdiales as a convenient spot from which to travel around the region, but were most pleasantly surprised at how lovely Castro itself is. On the one side you have the hills of Cantabria and on the other, the town and the sea. The flat itself is about five to ten minutes walk from the centre and from the seafront. There is a supermarket, a market, numerous bakers and fishmongers within easy reach. The fish is excellent. If you don't want to cook, there are numerous restaurants and tapas bars selling delicious and very reasonably priced, food, both local and more generally Spanish. All the waiters and bar staff were friendly and helpful. A bonus for me was that they all seemed to understand my being ceoliac and were able to provide hot, gluten free bread at no extra cost.
Castro has both an old and new part, the latter obviously planned, designed and built by people with an eye for the aesthetic. Along the sea front is a lovely and well maintained promenade, with beautiful views out to sea and, on the land side, a fascinating line of buildings, each one different, but sharing a broadly, common style. There are large, clean beaches and lovely cliff walks in both directions.
We did not have a car while there, but relied on the buses to take us both east to Bilbao and west to Laredo (with a large, beautiful old centre) and beyond. Buses are fast and comfortable.
As for the flat itself it is generally well equipped and had good views both towards the sea on the one side and the hills on the other. The building is in a gated and secure compound, with a swimming pool which is kept clean. There is also secure parking should you need it.
Finally, the owner, Jose Luis, is extremely helpful and very willing to make enquiries and/or reservations for guests and offers useful advice on things to do.
