We took the 'Exploring Rio Mira' trip, dropped off at Casa Branca by our extremely friendly and helpful guide to paddle back to Vila Nova de Milfontes.
The plan was to float with the tide, which worked perfectly, except the wind came up more than expected and whipped the longer reaches of the river into significant waves, making the paddle more fun but also far more challenging!
The scenery and wildlife are stunning, and the last stretch with views of the bridge and town with the ocean waves breaking into estuary at the end a fitting finale.
Even in calmer conditions it is a significant stretch, so don't take it on lightly, he does offer a shorter out-and-back option too, but it was well worth the effort for me and my 73-year-young Mum!
