“Best service by far!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

We were told about Valiyavila by a young guy who worked on a houseboat we stayed on for a few days working our way down to Kollam. On arrival we were hot and tired and just wanted to relax, which is just what we got here. We were sorted with plug adapters to charge phones (free of charge) and had choice of 2 rooms. We took the room with the Goddess of Light overlooking us and fantastic views of the lake. Although it does need updating (which will be happening later), the room was large, as was the bathroom and everything was in great working order.

It really is a lovely, quiet and tranquil place to stay, just what we needed after a hectic, hot day in Kollam! Dinner was also really great. The highlight of our stay was after dinner. All the people who worked there came round to our verandah playing birthday music, with roses and a huge cake which the manager Prabhath Joseph had secretly organised after seeing the date of my birthday in my passport! It was a great night of cake eating and chatting with them! They made my 30th birthday very special.

I know Prabhath Joseph is off to pastures new soon...good luck and I am sure that it will be great because of your fabulous and personal service. Hopefully we can stay in your new place once we can afford tickets back out to India! Thank you for such a lovely stay x

Valiyavila was by far the most disappointing of our stays in India. The location is undoubtedly incredible, but the cleanliness, service and hotel condition failed to match in every way. The hotel seemed to be staffed by a few teenage boys, who seemed more intent on watching the cricket than cleaning up the food that littered the lounge floor both upstairs and downstairs. On our arrival the upstairs terrace furniture was lying on it's side in random places - despite it being a perfectly still afternoon and tablecloths were lying in the outside garden downstairs. It's not that the former glory of this estate has passed, the lack of warmth from the staff (and perhaps the lack of a woman in charge) make this place barely passable backpacker fodder. Certainly not a family desination. Of all of our home stays and hotels in India over the month of January this was by far the worst.

I lived and worked in Quilon and returned for a very nostalgic visit after a period of forty years. My daughter recommended that we stayed at Valiyavila Family Estate and I am very pleased that we took her advice. Mr Prabath Joseph was extremely helpful, not only did he make us very welcome at the hotel but he also spent a great deal of time taking us around Kollam so that I could visit my sons grave and also meet former members of my staff.

The accommodation was very comfortable, the food was excellent and the staff could not have been more helpful. Both my wife and and myself look forward to returning to Kollam and staying at Valiyavala again.

May be the most serene place you will stay in India. Views to die for. Friendly staff. Kollam is an interesting "real" i.e. not excessively touristy place. If you are looking for a break, this is your place.

Room Tip: I had a non-ac room on the second floor. Great views & I enjoyed sleeping with the doors and win...

We spent one night at Valiyavila Family Estate. The room was neat and very nice.
The staff and the owner Joseph were very helpful and friendly.
We had breakfast on the terrace in front of our room, just next to the lake, it was very pleasant.

This hotel has a great value for money, definitely go there!

I stayed here one night with my wife in a ground floor room looking directly onto the goddess of light statue and the lake. We came by taxi and although the hotel offered to provide a boat from Kollam we said we would get the taxi to drive us there. It is very hard to find but car but we got there eventually after asking many people for directions. Overall the building and surrounding gardens are very run down and need a lot of attention. Our room was okay with a huge bathroom but let down with small things like paper stuck on the walls to cover where tiles had fallen off. The bed was clean and comfortable though. We went into town on the public ferry which leaves from a jetty about 200 yard from the hotel down a wooded track. This okay going in daytime but would be very dark and difficult if returning on either of the two ferries which run after 5.30pm.

We had breakfast on the verandah and cannot fault that either the food or the service. In fact the best part of this hotel is the service received from Joseph and his staff all of who went out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Joseph was aware that the hotel had become run down and told us he will be leaving at the end of the season to start a new holiday home venture nearer to the centre of Kollam which I have no doubt he will make a success of.

The location of this hotel on the lake is superb and with a considerable amount spent on it to bring it up to scratch it could be an outstanding place to stay. At the moment it is most definitely not.

I had a very pleasant stay here where I was warmly received and served a delicious home cooked dinner on the large veranda overlooking the lake. My room was large and clean with a good size en suite bathroom. The charm of this place is it's location just by the water's edge, it is a stone's throw from the jetty where you can catch the small "ferry" through the backwaters to Aleppy.
