December evenings - even afternoons - can get quite gloomy in Denmark, since darkness comes creeping so very early in the day. With the barren trees, there is little to cheer you up. This is probably why Christmas decorations start earlier and earlier in the shops every year, and explains why Danes love candles so much.

Hørsholm Church is situated on a diminutive island, very prettily surrounded by lakes with swans and ducks, and beautiful trees, in what once were the castle gardens of Royal Castle Hirschholm. This allows the church to stand in serene majesty, both summer and winter.

The area around the church is visited daily, very popular for walking your dog, or bicycling in the lovely surroundings. On one side of the church is Gl. Hovedgade, the original main street of Hørsholm, with quaint old houses, restored and still inhabited. It is quite an experience just to take a walk there. On the other side are museums, both for local history, and for agriculture. The latter has a nice little café.

Hirschholm Castle set the scene for one of the most spectacular romantic dramas in Danish history - this was where Queen Caroline Mathilde had her love affair with the royal physician Johann Friederich Struensee in the summer of 1771. Their daughter Louise Augusta was born that summer, christened in the church that was the castle chapel then. All trace of this very unfortunate story was sent into oblivion: Struensee met his end, the Queen was deported, the castle was torn down. Spared were only the gardens and the chapel, left to deteriorate.
But the grounds are so lovely, and in 1823 the Hørsholm Church we see today, was built and ready once again. Beautiful architecture, perfectly designed for the surroundings.

There is still a definite air of romance about the place, and every year the church houses a Christmas Carols concert. I went there last year with my significant other on an icy cold December night. The church is lit up by lanterns in the ground, which makes a truly lovely scene with the white walls, black roof, and the black branches from the winter barren trees. Normally I do not enjoy queuing, but waiting to enter was for once a breath taking experience.
Once inside, people were happily anticipating the concert, many evidently come every year. The concert itself - Marie Carmen Koppel singing Gospel carols - was wonderful, embodying the essence of Christmas for all attending. We will certainly return every year.
