We had a wonderfull stay at crossroadlodge. They we're very welcoming and invited us for diner. The second day they introduced us to their son and his girlfriend. They took us out on their boat to go nightfishing nearby. Was one of our most special experiences during our trip trough New Zealand.

Dont know where to start...

Arrived at Crossroads after a long tramp up to Mount Heale hut in the bush, and I have to say, Crossroads is awesome! Bruce and Kate are the best hosts - didnt see much of Kate as she was all over the show (and also I'd had a few beers which probably didnt help.. haha) but bruce met us initially, showed us around and sat with us in the lounge and yarned away.

The prices are very decent, think it was 35 a night. The beds are very comfy and the sheets nice and clean, rooms not musty or anything. Was suprised because every other backpackers I go to these are common faults.

Crossroads has an awesome homely/ travelled vibe to it, and when I return to GBI for my next adventure, I will be staying here 100%. Target rich environment.. CHEERS GUYS!!

Victor

Stayed here during labour weekend 2012. Fabulous stay- well located- within reasonable distance to Medway beach, hot springs, golf course etc. but the best thing about this hostel are the owners. Bruce and Kate do a wonderful job running the place- extremely friendly and great to sit and chat to, very helpful and ever so welcoming. The communal areas at the lodge are great- really good cooking facilities, clean, big comfy sofas which make socialising with fellow backpackers an absolute delight.

Really recommend staying here- good value and a first rate reception!

I spent 4 great nights here, excellently positioned on Aotea, you are half way to everywhere! it is an easy 2 km stroll into claris and there are little paths along the road to detour and take in the bush, mind the drivers though, both tourist and locals, however people are very friendly and helpful. The island itself is sooooo special. It is a bit off the beaten track but well worth it. car hire is very reasonable, and an excellent way to get around the island, the roads are winding and narrow and mountainous some areas are sealed some not, however all are in good condition. Kate and Bruce are wonderful hosts and actually share their home with you. There are great bush walks for all grades of fitness, advice wear boots!!!! I didn't bring mine and wished I had. And bring food, there are great eating places, however food from the shop is expensive due freight, there is a market day at Tryphena on Saturdays with vegies and eggs(all local for sale). Amazing creative talent on the island, painters, sculptors, carvers, quilting, pottery .... the list goes on and an excellent gallery at Claris. Fishing, swimming, surfing, diving etc its all there on this great little place. A really good pioneers museum at Claris too, not much info available on Maori history. 4 days was not long enough to explore. but it just depends on where your interests lie.
