“Noisy and busy place with shortcomings”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2011

We stayed at the Newgrange Lodge in a 6-bed mixed dorm (why do they have to offer mixed dorm in the first place), but in the room we found that there was no way to lock neither the bathroom nor the toilet. With that many people in the room it's just disaster waiting to happen.

The rooms didn't seem awfully clean, breakfast was reasonable, the price relatively high for a hostel.

The ground floor twin room we had was excellent and the shower was one of the best on our trip. The receptionist was also very friendly and helpful in arranging our trip to New Grange..

Room Tip: Pick the ground floor rooms if you have luggage.

Camper vans lived in! in the parking lot, reception like a nursery school, kids running everywhere, musicians strumming and singing in the public area, room small and basic, hot water was a struggle, smoke from the kitchen in the corridor, doors in the rooms not noise proof, cheap but cheap is what you get

Not only is the Lodge a B&B, Hostel and Conference space, it also has space for camper vans in the front car park. Hard standing only. For half the price of more basic sites, the Lodge offers, electricity and water hook up., camping kitchen, showers, wifi and a lovely lounge area. Staff very friendly and knowledgable of area. If your visiting the extraordinary Newgrange tombs, then theres no point staying elsewhere, as it's only a hundred metres or so from the entrance.

This is an interesting property since it is a combination B&B, hostel and conference center. The B&B rooms were clean and comfortable. The common areas were spectacular with an outside deck (with Dowth Town and passage tomb in the distance, a lounge-type room, a sunroom with cosy furniture and an interior outdoor courtyard. We spent most of our evenings here chatting with other guest and enjoying the time with our family.

The Newgrange Visitors Center is a short walk and there is a village about 4 minutes east with a pub, restaurant, store and pharmacy. It is close to Slane, Monasterboice, Battle of the Boyne site, Trim, Tara and many other sites of historical interest.

We liked the place and would recommend it to others. The young man running the desk was extraordinary telling us about the facility, the area and to come see him for bookings to Newgrange (10% discout and a guaranteed spot).

I came to Newgrange Lodge with a group who visited Newgrange and other places of interest. From the first phone contact with the lodge, staff there were so helpful with planning the itinerary.

We received a lovely welcome and were able to use all of the facilities. The place is very well thought out with different areas to sit in, a lovely outdoor decking area, nice choice at breakfast and I would certainly recommend it.

I'm a little surprised at another review I saw complaining about the continental breakfast. That's exactly what it was and not only does their web site state that, it was reiterated when I made my reservation. It was just fine for us- a nice break from the full Irish was had nearly everywhere else we stayed.

We checked in after getting lost (due to our GPS, should have just followed the signs) and the guy working the front desk was very helpful and friendly. We joked around with him a while and he made sure we knew about the attractions in the area and how to get to them without getting lost. We unpacked a bit, and not wanting to drive anymore, went down to get some supper. We got a really excellent Irish stew with so much wonderful lamb as well as bread and tea and dessert for 10 euro each. It was in fact the best lamb stew I had in Ireland.

Our room was very comfortable and quiet and a great deal at 55 euros for a twin room. The WiFi worked great in the common areas. The only drawbacks were not great coffee- tasted like instant (I learned to just drink tea in Ireland), the bathroom steamed up quite a bit (minor inconvenience), and the beds were on wheels so they moved around a bit. The great staff more than made up for these small issues.

Pictures are included so you can see everything for yourself.
