I stayed at Diablo Tranquillo Hostel, right on the beach. You walked off the decking in front of the bar area and were straight on to the sand dunes, with the sea not more that 30 metres away. Relaxing doesn't do it justice. There is a shared fridge for you to keep beer or wine chilled, or you can juts buy one from the bar. The breakfast of unlimited fruit, toast, juice and coffee was great. Only one evening meal option each night, but it was always delicious and came with a glass of red wine. The music selections were reggae, chillout and soulful jazz. A wonderful place to stay.

On a rather cloudy day, we visited Cabo Polonia and Punta del Diablo. Don't miss Polonia, and don't worry if you miss Punta del Diablo. We drove into town, parked, and walked around the little streets. It was a Sunday so there was a very local vibe, which was fun. It is, however, just a collection of one restaurant or bad shop after another along the stretch of coastline. The rocky part of the beach is uninteresting--the part of the beach with high sand dunes looks more promising. We had a beer and left. Someone had recommended that we drive all the way from La Pedrera to have dinner at Deja Vu. We are astonished at that suggestion--it's over an hour drive for dinner at a restaurant that looked like it had seen better days, with bad curtains on the window and a dirty deck in front.

This gem of a place is east of Montevideo, 45 minutes drive south of the border between Uruguay and Brazil. If you're after chic with boutique hotels and restaurants this isn't for you but if you want something really different with beautiful beaches and views give it a try. We stayed at Cabana Con Permiso which we booked through Air BnB. It is just above a beautiful beach and on a clear day (which ours were) you can see Brazil in the distance. As its name suggests, be a devil, give it a try.

Punta de Diablo is a small town with a lot of cabanas, which are empty in winter. During the weekends there a few more people around. A few beautiful beaches and National Park St. Tereza surround the town. That is great for hiking and cycling. I think this town is overrated by many people. And on the other hand it is Uruguay. Melancholic and beautiful at the same time.

Punta del Diablo is the most amazing place I've ever been to. The culture is relaxed and chill, no one is stressing and the weather is always pretty much amazing. The beaches are big and clean, there's fresh fruits in the markets, all kind of salamis, sausages and cheeses, good juicy breads and sweet restaurants. If you love to surf, this is the place for you. If you love to stroll around and discover new things, this is the place for you. If you are stressed out and need a break from the world, this is absolutely the place for you! I love it here and I don't want to go home!
