A stop on the winter snowmobile route

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 24, 2019
We stayed in a standard room in the lodge. It had plenty of room for all of our winter gear to dry overnight. Room was clean and very quiet we had a good sleep. There were a bunch of people in the hotel so the kitchen was open. We bought the package which included the choice between two dinners (I would not recommend the Osso Bucco) and a breakfast buffet the next day. It was a cold night and we did not inquire about the hot tub. Upon arrival we had to go to the lounge to find someone to check us in but we were booked in right away. There is a small room off the dinning room with a fireplace that is nice to sit in chat and relax if you can get them to turn off the television as it seems to double as the living room for staff. There is a large garage you can pay extra to park your sled in but it is not so warm that ice will melt off the sled overnight. We did not have a problem following the signage from town after fuelling but another group had some difficulty finding the place.

We were on motorcycles and found we had to travel 12-14 km's on a dirt road but the road was good.
We called for a room the only thing left was a Chalet, Glad for that because it was awesome. Nice people and very clean. Chalet had 2 bedrooms, living and kitchen area and l deck to sit out on. No internet but we didn't mind.
    Great place....

Room tip: if you want quiet choose a cabin or chalet, they also have a large building with rooms.

Under new management. We stayed there last March and the owner was very hospitable and very welcoming. They don't always have anyone to cook but he brought some friends in to cook for us. He was very helpful as well. We were on a snowmobile trip in the area and the rooms were very nice. Beautiful scenery as well. If they get more business there would be staff to cook but they have amazing cottages as well. No longer is there a pool but your sleds are put under cover in the garage.

Upon travelling throughout Gaspesie for near 10 years, we decided to try this "resort" for our regular stop on route to the Forillon National Park. Prior to making the reservation call, we carefully review this property website to ensure that they offer the services that we were looking for e.g, cottage accommodation, restaurant, indoor swimming pool and walking trails. Early in the Spring we made a reservation for a 3-day stay in the summer, for which we paid 50% of the total in advance to guaranty the reservation. During the telephone conversation, we were confirmed that both the restaurant and the swimming pool are open throughout the year.
Upon driving an ill- signaled dirt road (actually we have to stop and ask to a local to find it), we arrived at the location late in the afternoon. The entire facility appeared to be empty, there was no one at the reception in spite that we were the only arriving car and that we ring the bell at the reception desk. Eventually, we found the attendant in the lounge next door. The first thing we were asked was to paid the stay in full. We reply that we would like to see the cottage first. Then we found out that both the restaurant and the swimming pool were closed and that they will remain closed during our stay. We were not offered any site plan or advise on where and how to find the walking trails. When we indicated that we dd not have enough food to last for 3 days and that we were expecting to have dinner at the well advertised "blue fork" restaurant, we were told that they did not have enough people to justify opening the restaurant, that we could go back to the nearest food-store (approx. 20 km away), come back and cook our own meal, that's why we have a kitchen in the cottage. Further, we were told that this is a winter resort, therefore, not all the services were available in the summer (in spite that we were told the opposite when we booked).
As it was dusk already, the prospect of a dirty road crossing the wilderness in an area that we were not familiar with with the prospect that we may not find a food store open in the near by village was not an attractive idea. We decided to eat what we had and leave the next day.
We were told that if we want to leave the next day, we would have to pay full price for the one night ( we had a better price as a 3-day package), in spite that none of the services advertised were available. They demanded that we sort out the account on the spot, which we did, At that point, we just wanted to leave and so we did the following morning.
Not planning to go back any time soon.

We stayed an overnight here at the start of the season and were the only guests. We were given a free upgrade to a suite of rooms with a fantastic balcony view of the mountains. The room was spotless and the wifi OK but a little slow. The cafe was not open as it was start of the season but the receptionist did offer to make us some snacks if needed. We had planned to barbecue anyway so found the picnic area with views of the mountains very pleasant.

Room tip: If you are going early in the season check that the cafe/restaurant will serve food.

We stayed here one night before setting out on a 5-day ski tour in the park. Its main selling point is that the next morning you are at the trailhead, no more driving required. Room was a good size (we got the largest room) for staging our gear and packing our backpacks. However the room was over the bar which blared thumping music until well after we'd gone to bed. Did not see any other skiers staying there, only lots of snowmobilers. Food was pricey and so-so. Breakfast better than dinner. St Octave is a ghost town with an interesting back story and we enjoyed a walk among the remaining buildings and down the roadway with hand-lettered historical markers - here was the first mass celebrated, here perished a family in the fire. There's a great view of the snowy mountains in the distance which adds to the excitement of heading off on a backpacking trip because you can see your destination.
