Maui has changed. After years of visiting and then too long away it was time for a return. The island is the same, still beautiful but it has grown up and is now crowded and busy. There are dozens of upscale hotels both south and north. There are many many condos' for rent for every price range and every activity you can imagine. And there are so many with people so many people. You really can have a myriad of choices
So why Maalaea? A toss back to a quieter and simpler Maui, with just a few condos along a piece of shoreline next to the boat harbor. But it borders 5 miles of great almost empty beach for walking and swimming . It has spectacular views across the bay toward Haleakala. The sunrises are magnificent.. It is quiet, so very quiet with a friendly feel. Yes there are only a couple of restaurants and two very small general stores but you can walk there. Kihei, Kahului are just a short drive away. Actually it is centrally located for every possible activity on the island.
It is a bit hard to find a place, which could be that this is a well kept secret and those who come stay and come again. After looking we lucked and found this rental in the Island Sands and we were pleased beyond expectations. It is a spacious two bedroom. The balcony (lanai) is just feet from the shore line. At night the surf lulls you to sleep. The cross ventilation keeps the place cool and comfortable. You won't find high end granite counter tops and fancy furniture but you will find clean comfortable living spaces, and reliable wifi. . The kitchen is Maui small but functional the washer dryer means you can leave all those extra clothes at home. And the view oh yes the view., sunrise over Haleakala sitting on the Lanai and watching a mother and baby whale just off the reef.
The complex and grounds are well maintained, everyone who stays there seems friendly. The communal barbecue the best way to meet others. As I said before it is so quiet that sleeping with the windows open to hear the surf is not a problem.
Tips: the rooms numbered above -06 at the Island Sands have the best views and are closest to the water.
Look at floor plans for all the condo's you are considering. For many one-bedroom units the bedroom is on the street side. Not a real noise issue in Maalaea but not the same feel. The two bedroom unit we had was priced competitively with smaller one bedroom units in other condo's.
All of our transactions through TripAdvisor went smoothly The owner was gracious and always responded quickly to any questions.
To "Kathryn L" thank-you for a lovely stay in your condo we will be back.
