Difficult to find as sign posting terrible but worth the effort just for the mosaics and views. The theatre would be great to see a play in the summer

Tindari is a hidden gem in the midst of all of the beauty that is Sicilia. It is like a mini Pompeii and it looks as though there is still plenty more that is being excavated. The only issue we had (and it's our fault for not knowing the Italian language) is that there is limited English translations of the exhibits. If you plan on going and can't read Italian, it may be best to google and research what you will find here because I'm sure we missed a lot.

To get to the archeological ruins at Tindari (Tyndaris) you need first to get to the vast sanctuary dominating the landscape and then drop down past all the tacky stalls. Officially you need to park at the bottom of the hill and take the shuttle bus up, but all visitors were ignoring the no entry signs when we went, and just kept going all the way up to the small car park by the sanctuary itself.

The ruins themselves are scattered across a vast, peaceful area, largely given over to nature, but apart from the remains of a sacred building and a house you do need to use your imagination, doubtless reaching the conclusion that "it must have been big"- which it was. There are plenty of other much more spectacular sites dotted across Sicily, but if you find yourself on the north coast spend an hour or so at Tindaris.

There are a couple of places where you can get something to drink, but most of the stalls are selling religious paraphernalia.

Entrance fee was a very reasonable €4 per adult (children <16 are free). Plenty to see - ruins, mosaics and the amphitheatre itself. Feels like a mini Pompei. You can really get a sense of how the town was laid out across the landscape etc. Well worth a visit.

The archaeological area of Tindari had quite a few Greek and Roman ruins to see, as well as a small museum with artifacts and a history of the area. There were paths winding around the ruins, which included a theater, a "basilica" and numerous other buildings. One of the best parts was that we basically had the place to ourselves. We visited on a Saturday afternoon, and we only saw a handful of other tourists. No lines and hoards of people here---you are free to roam around the ruins and enjoy at your own pace!
