The ancient Greek ruins are well stabilized and explained with good signage. Imagine sitting in the theater with a clear view of the sea beyond the stage. The theater was being set up for performances when we visited. A small museum houses few finds from the site.

Tindari may not compare with the theatres in Siracusa or Taormina but its remote clifftop location is stunning and worth visiting in late afternoon for panoramic views of north coast and mountain ranges of Sicily.

Easy enough to find. We took the Patti exit from the motorway and got a return bus ride to the site. This was one of the last Greek colonies founded in Sicily in the early C4th bce. It was later a major Christian ecclesiastical site. The christian basilica survives to ca 8m high in places, although the apse has gone. The real highlight is the completely excavated Roman insula. The domestic bath complex is excellent, with superb mosaics in all rooms, heating ducts and pipes, plastered reception rooms with mosaic floors but not as well preserved, and a peristyle courtyard house. One outstanding feature of the excavation, and one I've only ever seen at Nysa in Turkey, is that the restored work is separated from the original stonework by a line of broken red pottery. This is subtle, but it is clear what is restored and what original, without having a major conrtast between the two. Top marks! Note also the north end of the cardus is severely buckled by earthquakes.

Besides it's incredible ocean views, this archeological site is the place to go for people who always like to learn about times before us... it's full of interesting information and trasures found from the ancient Tindari times.
