It wasn't my first time to visit Coron in Busuanga, Palawan, but it was my first time to stay at the "El Rio y Mar" resort located in Brgy. San Jose. A boat will pick you up from a meeting point to take you the resort, which is quite secluded. You'll have to pass through a mangrove (navigable only during high tide, so be sure to check the schedule of the tides if you go in and out of the resort!). As you arrive at the resort, you will dock at its Port Caltom, then cross a board walk to the main entrance.
The resort offers different types of accommodation ... the "Casa Room," the "Cedar Cabana," "Deluxe Room," the "Superior Room," and the Native Cabana." We occupied some of the "Casa Rooms" whose ambiance is a mix of both native and modern styles and materials. Ours was very close to the resort restaurant ... the Al Fresco. Don't ask me about the price of the accommodation, for I honestly don't know how much our company paid for it. I heard though that you can get a room there for as low as 5000 pesos a night, which is not bad at all.
As for the foods and drinks, they serve the best at the Al Fresco restaurant, prepared by excellent chefs! You can also go to a reef bar at Port Caltom and have a drink or two while occasionally leaping into the waters around it.
As to the facilities, the resort has a restaurant, two swimming pools, a lounge, a karaoke room, a sports room, a dive center, and a gym (among others). Unfortunately we were not able to use all the facilities in the resort because we spent most of our time outside of it, travelling, island hopping, and so forth.
The view from the resort is spectacular ... mountains, a cove connected to the open sea, a small mangrove on one side, etc.! At night the resort, with all the light lit, looks great and very enchanting. You'll see some fireflies hovering around the trees by the beach. It's like living in a fairy tale! Lastly, the staff are very friendly. They helped us arrange some of our tours to nearby islands.
With all these I can say that the "El Rio y Mar" resort is truly one of the best resorts not only in Coron, but in the Philippines at large! Highly recommendable, indeed! I would love to return there for another very relaxing and luxurious vacation! If the resort has any drawback, it is its inaccessibility during low tide, when it is practically impossible to pass through the mangrove leading to it. No further comment.
