“Poor quality food - poor service”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

We visited the Kings Arms restaurant for Sunday lunch, there were four of us with one being a vegetarian. The décor of the restaurant is very stylish and comfortable; unfortunately the food and the service let them down as below:

• We each kicked off with a Bloody Mary, these were served in tiny glasses (prob 6 – 8oz at a guess) which is fine, however at the end when the bill arrived we noticed they had charged us for a double vodka shot each. Considering the size and the fact that none of us could really taste the vodka I very much doubt whether it was genuinely a double shot.
• Once we had ordered we had to wait a long time for the starter to arrive. When it did arrive it was ok (although you can’t really go wrong with a mezze platter with pitta bread!)
• The vegetarian of our party ordered a Portobello mushroom burger and when ordering this was clearly confirmed by the waitress. When the meals arrived he had in fact been given a beefburger. This had to be returned which meant we were not all eating at the same time. This made the rest of the group feel quite uncomfortable.
• Two of us had the Sunday roast (beef) which was cold as were the vegetables that came with the meal.
• By way of apology one of the members of staff came over and offered one free dessert or one drink. Although I am sure the intentions were genuine it came across as slightly insincere. We also felt that this wasn’t particularly generous since each of us were affected by the mistake in the order. I would suggest that as a minimum the cost of the meal should have been taken off the bill and a round of coffees thrown in.
• Once we had all finished our main course the plates sat on our tables for quite some time, in fact we had to ask one of the waitresses to clear our table.

We resolved these issues above between ourselves by simply not leaving any service (something I have never done in the past). As we were leaving we all felt it was a most disappointing experience and were left there feeling neglected. We will not recommend the Kings Arms to any of our friends and certainly will not return.

To summarise I have eaten in restaurants where things have gone wrong (haven’t we all?) but left feeling very content (and left service) because the situation has been handled in the right way. It is how these issues are handled that makes such a huge difference to the whole experience and this is the main reason for writing this review and why none of us will return to the Kings Arms.

Stayed in an annex room #15, (converted garage?), very nice decor, comfy bed, nice bathroom. However it was very noisy, we stayed Saturday night lots of noise outside til late, at 0630 Sunday morning we were woken by someone (staff?) doing lots of walking on creaky floorboards/stairs for ages. No parking at hotel, which wasn't made clear on booking. Reasonable breakfast but service wasn't great, had to ask 3 times for something.
Would I stay again, no. Was it worth the price, no. did I tell the staff on checkout, no, no one bothered to ask how my stay had been.

Room Tip: Don't have an annex room!

Thank you for your comments. As a town centre hotel there is inevitably some noise from outside, and due to the building being grade II listed there has been minimal change to the structure itself. We can assure you that our staff undergo continual training and make every effort to ensure a guest's comfort both during a stay in the hotel and as a customer in the restaurant. We strive to maintain the highest standards of food and service, however if you feel that there was an exception in these circumstances, please email us at marketing@oakmaninns.co.uk eith further details about your experience, and we will hopefully restore your faith in the Kings Arms. Many thanks.

We stayed in this hotel and was kept awake until after 2 a.m. whilst the staff in the flat opposite the hotel played very loud music (I didn't realise they were staff until the morning after or I would have complained on the night). We were then woken up at 7 a.m. when staff emptied bottles into the recycling bins. The full English breakfast was really good quality and the waitress serving us was helpful and friendly. Unfortunately this positive experience didn't transfer to our Mother's Day lunch which was rushed, the staff were stressed and we had to send our Sunday carvery back as it was clap cold. I believe the pub couldn't cope with the amount of bookings they had - I think greed was put as a priority rather than quality.

A meal with friends - the waiter was quite rude to me whilst ordering my food, which I have to say was overpriced for what it was (quite basic) . I eat out several times a week and I have eaten much better flavoured and better cooked food for half the price. The wine was good, atmosphere ok, desserts poor. I don't think they are cooked on site and all tasted rather stale. Would not rush back.

I stayed for two nights recently. I chose to stay in Berkhamsted as I was visiting friends and family in London but did not wish to stay in the city. I was recommended to try the Kings Arms by friends who had stayed in the past. The room was perfect, it had great character, nice and spacious with a good en-suite. The breakfast menu had a great variety and I ended up having the scrambled egg with smoked salmon on toast option. Incredible! I also stayed for dinner on my second night and was very pleased with what I got! The menu was varied and the portions were spot on. I had lamb and it was just right. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. All in all it was a great stay and is hard to fault. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and will almost certainly be staying there in the future.

A good base for us to do the Berkamstead Half Marathon.
The hotel was very accommodating with early check-ins and late check-outs. Service was friendly and food was done well.
Only complaint was the noise as there was a function that ran until late into the night.
All in all, a good stay.

Room Tip: A second floor room may be better on a weekend to get away from the noise.

Stayed two nights. Staff friendly and pleasant. Risotto superb. Caesar salad had all the right ingredients not necessarily in the right order. Dressing very gloopy. Breakfast good. The rooms are large and characterful though those on the front are noisy due to wetherspoons next door - late night music and early morning deliveries, with no concessions to times. Better soundproofing would help.

Room Tip: Don't go for the rooms facing the high street
