Incredible! If you are in Uji, make sure you give this place a visit. Everything matcha-ey about this place is top notch, from their soba to their desserts. I actually prefer this than Nakamura Tokichi Honten (although to be fair, I did visit Tokichi's Kyoto branch, not the original Uji one).
If you love green tea and matcha, you will feel absolutely blissful here, and somehow, you'd fit in that extra dessert even after you are full (typing from experience here...)
This restaurant is located on the north side of Uji, arguably the 'less' touristy area, and you'd probably feel you'll be going out of your way a bit to reach this place. But it's worth it :) Get one of the green tea soba dishes (our favorite is the zarusoba), and get the desserts. Any dessert. Then perhaps, squeeze in an extra order of another type of matcha dessert ;)

The shop also sells various matcha/green tea inspired snacks, teas, and alcohol/sake/wine. Try the green tea wine. Beautiful.

Itohkyuemon is the best place to eat when visiting Uji. You can come here for a full meal or just for dessert. The non-desert position of the menu is limited; you can get hot or cold matcha soba noodles, which are tasty. There are lots of desserts, including large parfaits and all sorts of other matcha sweets.

This place gets very crowded so go early or be prepared to wait. Most of the staff don't speak English (we were the only non-Japanese speakers there when we visited) but they will bring you an English menu with pictures that you can point at to order.

In addition to the cafe, there is a shopping area here where you can buy everything from hojicha cheesecake to high end sencha. We bought some tea here and it's excellent, but you can buy cheaper and still very high quality tea in some of the shops near Byodo In Temple.

If you take the Keihan Uji Line to Uji, you turn left (and do not cross the river) to find Itokyuemon, which will be on the left side of the street. Look for the large plastic matcha parfait out front. (This place is in the opposite direction from Byodo In Temple and all the other tea stores; you will turn right and cross the river when you go to visit them.) Itohyuemon is open from 10am to 6pm daily.

Please note there is a branch of Itohkyuemon near Byodo In Temple, but it does not have a cafe.

This matcha restaurant is located on the way to Mimuroto-ji temple. You should have a rest -stop here after visiting the garden. Have brunch here ! This is an extremely popular place among the local Japanese and at 11am when I went, the place was already filled. So if you are thinking of lunch, you would have to wait on the queue for some time.

As there are many matcha restaurants in Uji, figuring which is Itokyuemon can be challenging. Make sure you write the restaurant name down on your to-do list in Uji and ask the lady at the Uji tourist information desk next to the JR station to circle its location on their English map.

What to eat - as much as you can stuff of course, the signature matcha soba, matcha parfait, matcha jelly (super wonderful) etc. Shop for matcha cake, matcha biscuits here too. They make good gifts to take home. I really don't mind coming to Uji just to eat here again !

With some homework done beforehand, we've got a 5% discount coupon for dining in cafe from their website and decided to try it. It was a weekday afternoon, while we walked along the street from the Keihan train station we saw so many local Japanese carrying shopping bags of Itokyuemon, thinking that wow .... it must be damn good!!!
Though there is not long queues, the cafe is full house all the time with people keep filling up the tables fast. Dessert was fantastic! Matcha parfait is full of different taste and texture. Pudding is supreme, not too bitter or too sweet. Staff would refill the hot hojicha promptly without fail.
We bought a lot of tea bags, food from the shop. One of them is a matcha swiss roll with chestnut (seasonal product). It doesn't come cheap but surely worth it with the unique taste of matcha and chestnuts which are smooth as butter.

This is the place where the locals go! We waited 40 minutes for a table, but it was worth every minute. We ordered a mountain sized green tea shaved ice with mochi, ice cream, and red beans and we also ordered a towering green tea parfait with dango, jelly, ice cream, red beans, mochi, and whipped cream. It came with a side of extra green tea powder to sprinkle on top. Heaven! There was also lots of free hojicha tea to go with it.

This shop is on the same road as the bridge to byodoin hoodo, but the opposite direction. There were signs in Japanese pointing the way, but it would be worth it to ask for directions in the train station. Enjoy!
