Visited the Blazing Donkey spontaneously today after booking our wedding here in January with our two friends. We got a table with ease. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, food was OUTSTANDING and very reasonably priced. We can’t wait to come back already and are even more excited about our wedding! Thank you, perfect end to our Sunday

Decided to stay at this hotel with friends for a weekend of walking after my husband had spent 4 nights here a few years ago on a golf trip. It is in a remote location in the beautiful Kent countryside 5/10 minutes drive from Sandwich. We were allowed into our rooms early as they were ready, which was helpful. We then made our way to the patio for some lunch in the sun whilst we awaited the rest of our party. We ordered coffee, which came in delicate, tiny, vintage china teacups - very quaint, but not really for cappuccinos, just about 2 mouthfuls. We asked for the lunch menu to be told they didn't have one but we could choose from the evening menu, so we just chose a starter. Thought this a bit odd that a food establishment didn't offer lunch, however, the chef did make a sandwich at the request of one of our friends, which was nice of him.
The rooms in the courtyard are very quaint and quite comfortable, although we had no hairdryer; a broken window catch; bathroom rad wasn't working; only one hand towel for 2 of us; and the waste bins had not been emptied!

Booked in for evening meal and had a drink at the bar beforehand. Didn't seem to be a very well stocked bar, only a couple of gins and no lime. When we asked for a wine list at our table, the waitress looked at us liked we asked for something unusual, she returned 5 minutes later and we ordered a bottle or red and bottle of white. She returned to say they didn't have the red, which was a Pinot Noir but said 'we've got this instead..' a Merlot. Completely different. We chose an alternative and after she went on a hunt said we don't have that either and stood looking annoyed at us as if we were being fussy, she was sour-faced and unhelpful. She was going back and forth so we asked what they did have and made a choice from that. They had hardly any of the wines on the list, we had our third choice in both red and white. The wine was very expensive at £6.50 a glass and averaging £30 for a decent bottle. The food was, however, quite good, although we had to ask for table water, glasses and sauces, but that's down to poor service.

Breakfast - we were greeted by the words 'full English?' as soon as we walked through the door, no 'good morning' or even showing us to a table. I said that I'd like to have fruit and cereal first before cooked food, she just snarled. The fruit was minimal, yoghurt was in a bowl and you had to spoon a bit out, there were no pastries and I quite expected tea/coffee to be served at our table, as it's only a small establishment. No, the drinks are out of a machine, which was broken, so the waitress obtained some from another machine behind the bar, she brought them to the table and said 'the milk's over there'! It would've been nice to have had some on the table. Two of the cups on our table were so dirty you could almost read the tea-leaves, we told the waitress that we'd swapped them to another table and she said 'oh ok', not, 'sorry about that' so the guests who then sat at that table had the dirty cups. My husband's cup was cracked and chipped quite badly! Whilst eating fruit and cereal our cooked breakfasts appeared with no regard as to where we were with our eating. The waitress was also chewing gum which she kept exposing!
There just seemed no regard for customer service, staff were rude, unsmiling and untrained. The only person who cared and seemed to put herself out was Nikita but she wasn't on at breakfast.

The following day we asked at reception if it was possible to book us a taxi to take us into town that evening. The first lady (the chewing gum one with long black hair) said 'no we can't do that, we don't have any numbers'. Weird response for a hotel!
Then Nikita came along and said she'd try and look one up for us and let us know. As there were no phones in the rooms, Nikita came to our room in the pouring rain and gave us the results of her find.
Overall I would not return to this 'hotel', it is not cheap and feel it appears they may be surviving on weddings and don't know how to look after other guests. Staff are untrained and there's not enough of them at any one time. If it was not for Nikita (I don't know her personally) who tried her best and went out of her way to serve us, there would've been many more complaints!

Dear Jackie

Thanks for your feedback.

We care very much that all our visitors should enjoy their time with us and so I am sorry and of course sad that we fell short on our usual levels of service during your stay. We very much value the specific nature of your feedback and have of course made changes and spoken to individual staff members where appropriate. I am aware that we benefitted from a very high number of late bookings on the weekend of your stay resulting in a higher than usual workload to those staff that were on duty-this clearly impacted upon the enjoyment of your stay for which we genuinely apologise. As a small but generally busy hotel it is sometimes very difficult to predict guest numbers in advance and we are working on this area.

Chewing gum. Our staff are not permitted to chew gum while on duty and we are sorry that these standards were not met. Taxi. There are taxi numbers at the reception desk as we regularly arrange these for guests. That the staff member in question did not offer to assist you with this is as disappointing to us as it was for you. We have as mentioned above taken appropriate action.

On the positive side I am pleased that you enjoyed your evening meal. Our chefs are very talented and the service extended to guests usually mirrors the quality of the food. Not so this time and once again I apologise.

If, as I hope, you would like to discuss the points raised with us directly then please feel free to call me. I would be delighted to hear from you and hopefully restore your confidence in our usually high standard of client care and offer some form of compensation for you.

Very best wishes
Sian
