Superb food produced by a very good chef - excellent choice of starters and mains. Be prepared to go get the menus yourself as the staff seemed to be either over worked or just lacking the ability to ensure guests are well looked after.

Metaponto Lido on a weekday afternoon in May is a fairly abandoned place. Luckily we found this trattoria with its outdoor seating, where the lunch menu was limited but good. They offered a few pizzas, pastas, and fish dishes. We opted for the pastas, way better than expected. I must confess that we got a kick out of watching two local policemen eating at an adjacent table--plenty of cigarettes, wine, and no one was in a hurry! As I said, this is a sleepy area off-season.

Lovely pasta, obviously good mussels as locals had loads, very keen and nice staff with decent english. Very little else along this coast at the moment and very few places to eat but La Barchetta came up trumps!

We tipped up early evening midweek out of season when nothing much was open and we were looking for some fish. The chef cooked just for us and the food was fantastic - in London you would pay a fortune for cooking of this standard. (We ate and drank plenty for 25 euros each.) We trusted to what was suggested by the staff and had about a dozen separate antipasti dishes, followed by a great bowl of mussels. Terrific seafood. Dessert was fantastic too. But the best part was the friendliness - the chef and waitress both were happy to chat and explain about the food, and we were made to feel really welcome even though we weren't a large party of big spenders. We definitely had the sense you would eat well here even if were busy and in high season. Strongly recommended.

- and how lucky we were, because the courtyard was pleasantly shaded, the tables attractively laid - and the food excellent. I had mussels (moules) and they were plentiful, large and juicy. My husband ordered a 'primo' (starter) of mixed antipasti. Out came a long wooden board filled with various meats and cheeses, with lettuce, tomatoes and fresh herbs. We wonder how Italians ever manage to get past their first course (the menus always give five at least.) We drank Italian beer and left quite full enough to resume our travels round the ancient sites, and then dip our feet in the sea.

A great thank you to the charming owner and the helpful waitress. I'm sure we'll be back.
